Pre-Made Kits

Recommended Posts

I know they're bad and we're not supposed to buy them, but I found this one at a flea market for $5 and wondered if it was worth grabbing for a starting point for my get home bag. It's complete and un-opened.

looks like the supplies are a bit lightweight to me. Seems a lot of these emergency aid kits are made to handle annoyances more than significant injuries. I'd suggest putting together your own kits, I've been around a lot of trauma and injury in remote/austere environments so if I can share a bit of what I know to help you put together good kits let me know.

I agree that it seems a little light. I keep all of that and more just for day trips to parks and other fieldtrips for minor "booboo's". Also, even if you felt this was sufficient, you could buy the pieces independently and be able to restock as you use them on a daily basis (what we do).

The same booth had an OD green Red Rock U.S. Navy med bag for $10 bucks. I may just grab it and start making my own kit. You'd think that being an EMT I'd know what to put in it, but I really can't think of a good starting list.

Remote/austere/survival medicine and wound treatment is a different ball game. You obviously realize that which does you credit. See if you can find a ten year old Combat Lifesaver manual from the army. A lot of the info in there will be rudimentary to you, but it also has a lot of improvisation info in it. I recommend the ten+ year old ones because the course was changed from a two week in depth course to a two day first aid class.

I'm not very smart when it comes to first aid materials. But my opinion on pre made bags are this, if the price is right and the materials in hit are what you need than go for it. I don't tend to buy them just because they generally don't put anything worth while in them and cost more than it would if I made the bag itself.

Tinder, you have a valid point, also common sense. Some people, none I've seen post here so far, buy a pre-made kit and think they are prepared. It falls into the same category as people who buy gear and never practice to have the skill set needed to use it. I've actually talked to someone who bought a "field" first aid kit (a few band aids and alcohol wipes) from a box store and thought that was all that was needed for a long term hunting trip.

I carry an M3 medic bag and just hope I never need to use anything in it. I have even "adjusted" from the standard issue and carry more of what I feel is necassarry for any true emergency.

Those are pretty good bags, takes me back a bit. A good lightweight system that I've fallen in love with is North American Rescue Combat Casualty Response Bag. It's compact, organized and has enough room for me to stock more mundane medical items. I didn't buy it, it was issued to me, and they said "keep it" when I went to turn it in. Something it came with, which saved me the time of making my own, were laminated cards with all your basics of first aid, and a form to help monitor casualties. Don't get wierded out by the "tacticool" name, it's a good practical aid kit.

I'll have to look for one. I was issued the M3, and ended up with 2 more from other troops who didn't want them when told we could keep them. I tried talking a medic out of his STOMP bag, but he just laughed... lol. I thought it was worth a shot anyway.

I found this link and figured it was the kit you referred to.

Yeah, that's the one, I probably should have provided the link myself. That drop leg attachment is removable, I normally have mine attached to the side of my pack, or on my belt if I'm out hunting and such. I realize it doesn't have anywhere near as much room in it as an M3, but I'm normally alone, so I don't have to worry too much about treating more than one person.

Edit; wow, i had no idea these things were so pricey, I need to keep a better eye on it from now on.

Wow Tom, thats a nice kit. I did my SAR Marine Medic course 2 years ago with a guy who attached to the NZSAS in Afgan. It was only a two day course but very practical 1st aid, and stories that i'll never forget. The key thing i remember was that all throught the course we only used what he called Trauma Crash Pak. It only contained large dressings, a tri bandage, gloves, survival blanket, face mask (CPR), very little else. When i got home i went through my 1st aid kits and with ABC in mind, airway/breathing/circulation, i looked to see what was useful. If you dont have an airway, aint nothing in a first aid kit gonna help, even if you are prepared to try a trechiotomy (SP), and if you arnt breathing, unless theres a defib in there somewhere, again not much use, so that leaves circulation, most first aid kits come with sticky plasters, ok if you cut yourself shaving, but no good if your bleeding out!

So i kept my two big kits, and redesigned them, made my own crash paks to put in, bought some clotting powder whose name i have forgotton, and just made the kits relevant to large wounds etc. I did keep all the little knick naks, but if have to bug out, it will be in a car and my big first aid kit/surival kit is what goes out on my boat, so its a pack on its own, not too large, it all fits into a medium sized cooler bag, which helps protect it, ...B)

Thanks Lyon, I like this little kit, and it's got a lot of miles strapped to me. Something that's pretty easy to work with for sustaining an airway that I've used a great deal is a nasopharyngeal airway, or snork tube as some of the medics I used to work with would call them. They're compact fairly inexpensive and don't trigger the gag reflex.

That sounds like a pretty good course you went to, it sounds like they kept things practical with a minimum of supplies. It's refreshing to hear that they still have that kind of training available in some places. It sounds like it got you thinking about what you'd really need in the event of traumatic injury, and you stocked accordingly. Band-aids are pretty useless when you're looking at an arterial spurt.

Yeah, it was a great course, the company is called yacht lifeline, they do marine medical training and installations on big boats mainly, but they take care of our coastguard medical training, which is why i was involved, im a coastguard rescue volunteer. just gonna look up nasopharyngeal airway...

looks interesting! we did things like assessing a patient wearing welding gloves and blacked out face mask, so we were in the hold of a boat 4deg, cant see cant feel your hands etc, really practical stuff, also did cpr, oxygen admin, defib training, we carru o2 and defib on the cg boat, i really enjoyed it, will do a follow up soon, but it gave me interest in first aid, and medical/trauma/accident/survival training, just another bow to the string, but worth a weekend given up, and paid for by CG!

One of the stories i recall ansd always will, was the instructor talking about his CO who was the guy who trained him here in NZ, when they were deployed in Afg, they were with the NZ SAS, he was hit by machine gun fire, 13 hits, 26 holes, Tutor was the first there, he took the head, the next guy was filling the holes with bandages, he said the guy was unresponsive, eyes rolled back, no colour in face, the next guy turned up and put his pack under the CO's legs, elevated them, within 30 seconds, the colour came back to his face, his eyes rolled forward and he started talking to them. I'll never forget that, and always remember, elevate the legs!

Yeah, that's something overlooked a lot, getting the blood out of the legs and into the torso and brain, it can be as simple as elevation. There is a lot of volume in the legs.

You know, for quickly plugging GSW's we used to use tampons depending on where the holes were. You can get them in a variety of sizes and with some granulated Quick Clot you can control some pretty severe GSW bleeds.

I guess that may have just been a story, the question i saked was of course, did the CO survive and he answered yes, its hard to imagine anyone surviving that sort of trauma. weather or not it is true, it gave me a lesson ill always have...

I wonder if you guys would check out the trauma module I put together on the www.doomandbloom.net site. There's an article on it and it's also described in the shop.

Be critical, as I want to tweak it based on your and others' input...

Dr. Bones

Doc (term of affection for a medic in Army),

That was a very nice kit. I think being a trauma kit, maybe a few more Israeli bandages would be good. To me when I think "trauma", I am thinking a possible "MASCAL" (Mass Casualty) and would like the Israeli bandages myself (simple, easy and very effective).

What are the dimensions and/or mounting system of the medic bag? I would be curious if I can mount it on a drop leg platform, my MOLLE vest or wear as a backpack. Are the bandage scissors what I think of as EMT scissors? (sorry for my ignorance on technical names)

A CPR mask and nasopharyngeal airway and small packets of surgical lube would also be valuable in a trauma kit of this kind.

I know this maybe more for an experienced medic, but a hemothorax needle may be a nice addition. Even in wilderness injuries, a fall can result in a broken rib puncturing the lung and creating a major issue (they are all major issues I know) thus I find this type of injury to be very possible.

I didn't see an emergency splint. We issued 1 to each troop for self aid/medic to use and then the medics carried extras.

If I missed the items in the kit, I apologize.

I find the kit very full and complete. I also am not sure what liabilities are for offering the items in a kit available to the general public. My M3 kits came with IV needles and such, but we operate under a different set of rules in the Army. Also, maybe even add the Combat Lifesaver manual (if available) or another wilderness trauma book with the kit. My field surgical kit came with the SF Medic manual.
