Gray or Gone

Recommended Posts

I've started this because I couldn't find the thread I thought already existed.

We talk about the 'Gray Man', pay it lip service but many of us (me perhaps worst than most) don't really follow the message. over on the web page

http://survivalcache.com/opsec-protecting-your-survival-preparations/

is the op-sec piece. Some noted the "Doomsday Preppers" TV show. I thought it was an overblown piece making us look fairly neurotic but then I saw this:

http://www.personalliberty.com/conservative-politics/liberty/doomsday-prepper-star-determined-mentally-defective-stripped-of-firearms/

Read it, I'll wait .............................................................................................

OK, I thought the guy was a just a little off plumb but REALLY? Now how many of you would like to be on TV? How many want to answer your family doc's questions about "guns in the house"? (That is a (perhaps THE) health issue under Obozo care you know?) Maybe buy ammo or firearms through the mail or on a credit card?

A question I do NOT want anyone to answer - and I mean this - DO NOT ANSWER THIS PARAGRAPH!

How many have "turn in" guns for when the feds come confiscating you have something to give them? If you have nothing, will you fight, run, hide, or just roll over and comply? Again I'd rather you not answer (be gray) but you should be thinking about this because this is the 4th time recently I'm aware of where our (you should pardon the expression) Justice Department has gone after people's guns and things while at the same time arming the murderous gangs from Mexico invading my State and Hometown.

The idea here is to list things that you've run across or perhaps do that reveals your prepper style and what we can do about them. It still isn't too late to start being Gray but it isn't easy and it is getting later every day.

Think about it a bit. How hard would it be for a mid-level government functionary to find you if they really wanted to. Want to take a bet it'd be less than 48 hours? No, me either.

Go gray, sooner rather than later or it may soon be too late.

Just my not so humble opinion.

I'm so sorry for that guy. I didn't look at the video because I have to go pretty up for Valentines dinner and couldn't wait for it to load, but the story is just heartbreaking! I would be absolutely irate!

I've refrained from "liking" some facebook pages for fear of being targeted by some anti-prepper actions. I've hesitated for days before signing up for certain catalogs but went ahead and did it. It's just hard to get any information without signing up, but I avoid it as much as I can. Probably not enough.

I used to think that the NRA was really paranoid about opposing virtually every law restricting firearms no matter how inconsequential it seemed. Having carefully observed what was going on around me I decided to become a life member as are my sons and brothers.

This is indeed a very difficult topic and probably should not be discussed however absurb that might sound in these United States of America. It makes me shudder to even say that. What have we become?

Kevin: I checked with a LEO friend of mine and he says that you should contact your local PD (or County Sheriff or State Police if there is no local PD where you reside) to file a report on lost guns. You should have the make/model, serial number, purchase date, and receipt when filing the paperwork. Be prepared for a hassle because the police really look unfavorably on people who loose their firearm(s).

Capt Bart: Going gray is not easy to do in today's advanced technological society. With big brother constantly looking for ways to erode our rights (case in point our Doomsday Prepper brother) contemplating gray is probably best done off-line. Call me just a little bit paranoid but letting the world know you are a well-armed prepper (IP addresses on these posts are easily traced) cannot be equated with going gray.

My friend's pediatrician asked them to answer a checklist of "home safety topics". One asked if there was a gun in the house. The wife answered. When my friend found out, he was irate. Kidding on the square, I gave them crap for now being on a list.

Ours has never asked stuff like that. Makes you wonder, if you refused to answer, how long before your friendly DHS worker showed up to collect your kids.

Good topics of thought.

I watched" Doomsday Preppers". I really wanted to see what other people did and to see how resourceful they were with their preps. These people I thought, took a big chance exposing themselves like they did.

I was impressed with the extent some of these people went with their beliefs. Its too bad that Sarti had some personal issues that caused him such a big problem, if he wasn't suicidial before he may be now.

Living gray in todays world may still be possible, but if you stop and look back at yourself you would probably see a trail any government goon could follow. Guns, ammo, any credit purchase just glows.

If anyone else that was featured in that show has problems like Sarti ,that would really be scary.

There are "information bureaus" that do nothing but collect information on everyone. Their clients are law enforcement, private investigators, attorneys, and pretty much anyone willing to pay a subscription fee. The biggest one that I know of is called Lexus Nexus. You would be astounded on how much information these companies have on just about everyone. Medical records, criminal records, job histories, everywhere you've lived, a list of all of your neighbors from all of these addresses with current contact info on them in case you want to interview them. One of the largest suppliers of information to these bureaus is Domino's Pizza. So every time you order a pizza, use a club card at your local grocery store, buy something with a credit card or debit card, or anything you do that leaves any kind of trace is noted. If someone was trying to find you it would take less than five minutes.

I have become very proficient with Lexus nexus and westlaw as it was mandatory trainning in law school it is absolutely insaine the amout of information that is available if you have the time and resources. Don't worry guys I don't have access anymore. Theses companys are like crack dealers while your in school the service is free but as soon as you graduate BOOM they slam you over the head with how much it actually costs, and b/c the schools don't teach people how to go to the law library and actually read a book, most are lost without it, unless they work for a company or govt org that pays for it for them. Luckily I'm not one of those guys, I happen to prefer the books.

Not sure what your state's laws are on "registration" but most states do not register the gun to the owner at the point of purchase. The paperwork you fill out pre-purchase has your personal info on it but not the serial numbers. From there the background check is merely to see if you have an existing or pending conviction that would prevent you form purchasing a guns.

If your guns fell in the river then they are lost fish food unless you live in the one or two states that register hand guns and assault rifles. Don't think any register hunting guns.

Hope that helps but remember - if they come looking for your guns, there will be many that have "fallen in the river" so if you are really up to the task then rent some want ads/for sale space in the paper about guns for sale with your phone number and hang on to the ad. You will get some crazy phone calls though!

Scary stuff. Ill bet some of the other preppers are wishing they hadnt been on that show. sad when being prepared is being compared with being crazy. Watched the second episode last night. I liked it better then the first one. I have noticed though how the show continues to say how unlikely anything bad is to happen.

I do agree. I don't think you're paranoid if they really are out to get you and today, if they're not, they are certainly making it look like they are. You are also correct. Why our posting names are nice, for the Fed we might as well put our addresses and phone numbers here.

Kevin: Remember that a false police report may be a felony. Do not do break the law in an attempt to shield your guns. One of the reasons I always have a "bill of sale" for a gun I've sold or given is to protect myself should it show up at a crime scene. Some jurisdictions (Bloomberg's mug seems to appear) have a time limit. You must report within X number of hours or you've committed a crime. Sweet, huh? They use your reporting of a crime as an excuse to seize what you may have left.

Why not just sell them in the parking lot or in the aisles of gun shows?

Yes, but get a bill of sale; for you and for the buyer. Buy one that was used in a crime and you are one ballistics check away from an arrest warrant.

I don't do FACEBOOK or any other of the tweet, link, whatever sites for this reason. I'm trying to bring down my profile a bit publicly so why would I advertise it to the known universe. The guy who shot up his daughters laptop over a FACEBOOK post was cool, but that post on YOUTUBE now has him under investigation.

A news story here in about a guy who was a "Warrant Officer" in the "Republic of Texas" militia shooting at sheriffs deputies. OK, the ROT guys are asking for trouble and they usually manage to get it BUT what got my attention was that after he surrendered they picked up a couple of "assault rifles" (AR patterned rifles) and a bunch of web gear and armor. The news reader bimbo in her most sanctimonious tone informed us that he wasn't even legal to have the weapons and web gear since he had a felony conviction. Maybe about the rifles but since WHEN is web gear illegal for ANYONE? Most folks didn't catch that little inclusion and this was on FOX news, the used to be fair and balanced.

Yes, being on this site probably isn't gray. Still, I need someplace to talk to folks.

Recorded it, will watch it this week. I wonder if the folks who are on there are the only ones who contacted Nat Geo or if they were hand selected. They almost all seem to have major flaws to me and not just the flaws pointed out by the "experts". Check out their site, by the way. They do want to sell you stuff!

So Capt, do you think NatGeo picked them on purpose to make preppers look bad? What flaws did you see if you dont mind me asking? Im relatively new to prepping and would like to avoid as many mistakes as possible. One of the guys on last night had a tool he had invented so Im sure he went on the show to promote it.

When people are asking for my info. I always give bogus phone #'s and email adresses. My favorite phone number to give out, the great 867-5309 and say ask for Jenny. That and there is a gag # one of your buddies probably sent you saying call me at this #, or some spin to make you dial a 603-sumpthin- sumpthin-sumpthin which when dialed goes to a recording that tells you that your name has been added to a venerial disease list. It's just a gag but I think it's great when the guy from the sleep number display at the mall tries to call me up.

I sent a friend to the gun show to buy himself a gun to save money.

He found a person trying to trade/sell the gun he wanted to a dealer- he bought it used at Gun Show from other shopper. Gun has second owner at show.

Friend bought it for cash. Gun now has third owner

Friend is walking to car and person offers to buy in parking lot for cash in excess of what he paid. Gun has 4th owner at gun show

Moral of the story is do not think buying a gun used a single owner and do not register a gun b.c lord knows the background.

If the background of a gun migh worry you - the throw away all your wife's jewlery and everything made in Asia. Just how the world works.

Im relatively new to prepping and would like to avoid as many mistakes as possible. One of the guys on last night had a tool he had invented so Im sure he went on the show to promote it.

I actually do think Nat Geo wanted to leave a 'they're all weird' thought in the viewers minds. Not enough so they couldn't get more folks on the air but I don't think there is much interest in the folks next door living normal lives with 6 months supplies and a few firearms.

As to what flaws? First they are on the show! Just how gray is that? Second, notice that most of the folks are somewhat 'extreme' in terms of having (or not having) weapons. I mean really, shooing at your own place to see how it will take a .22 round says nothing about how it'd take a .308. Also, living in containers is something most folks would think is a little peculiar. The guy who lost his guns seemed a tad unusual, driving around with all the guns. Showboating for the camera is, at best, stupid. At worst it will cost you your freedom. Toasting the end of the world! Really???? Think GRAY!

As for the actual preps, none of them had any concept of actually defending their BOL. Even the ones that addressed it did not do it very well. While I don't quibble with teaching everyone to handle all the firearms, NOBODY showed any recognition of the fact that if you are in a firefight, you will lose members of your group. 'Acceptable loses' is a military concept. A necessary one if you're going to do battle but when it is from my family, the only acceptable lose rate is zero.

A dozen tons of food sounds good but probably isn't, unless your group is big enough that that amount is a 1 to 2 year supply. Food rotation gets to be a big chore and knowing where everything is can be a problem with no computers. Having emergency seeds is good but if you aren't planting all the time, you don't know how to grow them reliably enough to count on them. Having each member of your group assigned a detail is good but since everyone would have to GOOD to get to the BOL, what about the holes in the skill set left by those that don't make it? Cross training is critical. Ask the SEALS or Special Forces guys.

Booby traps and trip wires will not secure a location. 24 hour a day guard shifts are tough on people, they get bored and without an edge will miss stuff. You need a big enough force to rotate guard duty, plant and maintain a garden, do the other work around the BOL that is always required. What they have could be taken from them by any GI who had any combat training.

The lady who was going to "walk out" of Houston was wrong from the git-go. She wildly underestimated the time required (civilians always do) and she was going to her CAR, for crying out loud, when she said her major scenario was 'no gas'. IF the car was even there when she got there, it would NOT have had any gas left in it. Big cities are that way.

Prepping should be fun but it has a serious purpose. More is not always better and expensive things like high tech stuff demand to be used so preps are built around them. Often that is not the best, or even an appropriate, way to go but you spent a lot of money so it HAS to be part of the plan.

Decide what you think are the most likely scenarios for your area. Once you have a list, prep for the most likely thing first. Then the second most likely and so on. By the time you're down around 4th or 5th scenario you'll be in pretty good shape.

Just my not so humble opinion.
