How much food is in your bag?

Recommended Posts

How many days of food is in your bag? I personally, have an engineers bag full of survival bars, each bar has 3600 cal. in it, each enough for one day. The engineer bag holds nearly a months worth of bars, but the bag weighs 24lbs. So that's 24 extra lbs in the BOB. The question I have, is how much food do you carry, and why. Whats the ideal amount? I don't believe in the "3 day pack" philosophy because that system is based on the military and a soldiers ability to resupply. Essentially its an assault pack style, just enough to complete your mission. But if the SHTF, we might not have a resupply. How does your food system work?

I consider the BOB a transitioning bag....3 days to get to a BOL, or buying time to get back to where you came from. And that's only if you have to leave behind the prepped BOV...I'd rather sleep in my SUV than in a tent if at all possible

My wife and I both have a 3 days of MRE's in our BOB and plus I have 2 days supplies of MRE's in mt GHB which is kept in my truck and then placed in her SUV when we drive it. So if push come to shove we could live off the MRE's for at least a week, and our BOL (Bug Out Location) is in the mountains of upper east tennessee and I would think by then I would be hunting trapping and fishing. That's our plan for now.

My bag

Small Coleman camp cooking set (nesting pot and cup) with tea, oatmeal packets, salt

-2 sporks

-9 cliff bars

-6 2 serving mountain house meals

-esbit stove with 10 fuel tabs

-stainless steel water bottle

Girlfriend's bag

-8 2 serving mtn house meals

-12 esbit stove fuel tabs

-large cooking pot with:

-ziplock of salt

-1 jar peanut butter

-20 granola bars

-tea/hot chocolate packets

-smaller cooking pot

I have a marine cooler to go in the truck with more supplies to use as long as the truck is operable. Past that I will be foraging. I figure there is no way I can pack enough food for long term survival so I pack ways to catch or hunt more instead of just food itself. I focus alot of my resources toward trapping or absentee fishing so I can be attempting to get food while working on other projects.

I have ten 3600 calorie bars in our bags, ideally we would be able to carry enough for forever! It all just depends though on how far it is to your BOL, your skills when it comes to hunting, fishing and trapping. I think three days is a minumum but really should have a weeks worth

Like others, my bag is designed to get me home which should require at maximum one overnighter. I carry enough food for three days. More than that is weight that is going to slow me down on the hike home. Less than that restricts my options.

Everything is a balancing act and choosing the amount of food to carry is part of that act.
