Home Invasions

Recommended Posts

Here in the metro Atlanta area the occurrence of home invasions has risen to a level that i thought i would never see. It has spread from the inner city to the outskirts of the metro area. People are being targeted for the business they own or the car they own or even a jewelry they may have on. Victims have been tied up, beaten, raped and killed at an alarming rate. Atlanta is the home of some very nasty thugs that believe theirs is what they can take.

I had a conversation with a very good friend and neighbor about this. We do disagree as to how we can handle the situation if it were to happen to us. His thought is to have a handgun placed in several key spots for easy access. A problem he has, is his grandson is in the house most days. AS for me, I carry a hand gun where ever and when ever i legally can. I open carry in my home. (I answer my door with a weapon in my hand but hidden from view if i dont know you). My reason to do so is i don't want to have that time delay of my door busting down and my mind going where is the closest firearm. It is where it always is-body temperature and at the ready. I have 15 chances (rds) to make it to my oh crap you done messed up back up weapon. I hope that i dont come off as some gun nut. I have lived long enough to realize that i cant go hand to hand with more than one person that intends to do harm to me or my family.

I just wanted to put this out there and see if this problem is on your radar as well. And here is a place to start thinking about it.

great post Awake. at my house, first line of deterrent is my trained personal protection dogs (1 german shepherd and 1 belgian malanois) you walk in my house and they are going to greet you in a not so welcoming way. i say deterrent because i view then not as protectors, but rather as deterrents/ time buyers. next is concealed carry. i conceal at all times in my house unless asleep. a gun is no good if its not accessible in hand. i conceal rather than open carry because we constantly have visitors and neighbors coming over and i prefer not to advertise or scare them. most are very delicate. (we live in cominfornia). additionally, if tshtf, i dont want them to think, lets go to bills house, he will protect us. i spend an ample amount of time in my garage working on projects and since i live in a tract, my garage door is generally open. unless i am cutting, or welding, or having a beer or two, i have one of my dogs and gun with me. I actually reconfigured my garage recently because my work benches kept my back to the street which i felt put me at a distinct disadvantage. i moved them and my equipment so that i was facing the street and could see people walking up my driveway. by doing so, it also gives me a decent amount of cover if needed. I also reconfigured my outdoor lighting because the bright work lights inside, and the lack of light outside, made it difficult to see anything when im inside the garage with the door open. now i have ambient lighting all the time and sensitive motion activated which also hook to a switch. the downside of those lights is the neighbors cats. get lit up regularly. i only wish it would keep them out of my yard. theyre the biggest home invaders i contend with at the moment. unfortunately my dogs have been trained to leave them alone for their safety. cat runs in the street, dog follows and car is coming would not be so good.

my uncle has guns strategically placed which for him he likes. but he lives alone with his dog, and noone ever goes over there. i dont particularly care for that method with my circumstances but for him it works. what he does have that i like but has drawbacks is his generator is hardwired into his fuse panel. recently we had some serious windstorms which knocked out power for 6 days, and he was the only one who had lights. the downside was that i thought this made him a bit of a target. but he said he carried the whole time that he had lights on when everyone else didnt.

hey backcountry. Just to clear a point. i open carry inside the house and conceal when the neighbors might be at the door. If i dont know the person at the door i open it half way concealing the handgun in my hand. I dont advertise the fact i own any guns unless you come around the back door. There is a Glock Perfection sticker plainly in view. I have dogs. More noise detectors but a Boxer and German Shepard do look mean to everyone else.

I have a trick to keep cats out of your yard. Learned this one from an old timer in south Georgia. Cats hate used coffee grounds. I save the grounds and put them out once a week. No more cat crap in my bushes. My wife said a silenced .22 was just going to be trouble so i use the coffee grounds. If you need extra grounds talk to your local coffee house manager. I tell them my hobby is gardening.

I can confirm your suspicions. As a 10 year vetern Deputy Sheriff in a very rural area we are currently overwhelmed with home invasions. I remeber 5 years ago when if we had two a year in the county that was normal. But now it is off the chain as the young people like to say. We had 16 in the month of November alone, another 13 in December. They all seem to be during the daytime hours around my neck of the woods. They hit between 10:00 and 2:00 pm. They are so bold that they dont care if you have an alarm system dogs or any other kind of "security" at your residence. They have been throwing steaks to the dogs and if that doesn't work they shoot them with a airsoft gun and it sems to work. I havn't seen a Pitbull or German Sheaperd yet that has actually stopped them. One call I went to had 4 full grown Pit Bulls in the house and a alarm syatem that went off and they still got all of the guns and flat screen TV. We have arrested at least 10 diffrent suspects and they all were caught red handed but the home invasions still keep coming. This class warfare that the government and media is harping on all the time has made these low lifes think that it's alright to steal from the rich (to them thats any family who makes over $50k a year) They shot a house up last Sat nite while I was working, it was two young guys who used an AR-15 with a laser and flashlight attachment and a .40 cal Sig hand gun with a laser. They drove by the house stopped out front shot it up drive by style then rushed through the front door tied up the home owners and stole all there guns and change jars. We caught them an hour later on a traffic stop but man Im telling you things are getting crazy and the Governmets spin machine of class warfare is making it alot worse.

wolfpack21643, I hate the fact that the present administration and their politics have made you job harder. I consider myself very lucky where i live. I have 2 LEO's and an FBI agent that live close by. With another neighbor there are five of us that are aware of the situation in our neighborhood 24/7. Cant say we have a perfect situation but i believe we could make it worth the time of these thugs to look elsewhere. We are just a bunch of average Joe's that want to be left alone to raise our families.

Stay safe wolfpack.

i live on at the end of a closed looped neighborhood. i hear about home invasions all the time how they're getting worse. a year ago it was copper theft of houses that were on sale. now it seems to be any other home that appears rich. theres a reason why i leave my grass long and leaves still unraked from past autumn, and the house in need of paint. jus 2 weeks ago a friend of a friend, 15 minutes from me was invaded, "they ran out the back and dissappeared into the woods."

we're coming and going from the house so often, i often worry, is this day i get shot with my own gun coming home? for a week i'll freak out, load up every gun i've got and hide them here and there, then worry if someone else will find'm, so i unload everything and put'em back in the safe for a couple weeks til i hear something again. i worry some punk kid will break in and accidently shoot their partner, if i leave'm out and loaded now. stupid how i'm held responsible, for people who hurt themselves on my property.

i'd love to carry at all times, but i know my wife would have a fit over it, plus my job doesn't allow "weapons of any kind" on the premises, where could i hide it and not be discovered during a pop up search. i'd really like my firearm to be apart of my GHB, but theres no where for it.

often i'll see a car that i've never have before driving around. usually on the 3rd or 4th time its going around i'll go out on the front porch with my cell phone pretending to take a picture of'em, but i do take mental notes of what make, model and license plate number of the vehicle and write'm down, then i never see'm again. its always some beat up hoopty with 3 or 4 people in it.

I worry about home invasions a great deal, especially given the demographic changes I have witnessed in my formerly nice, middle class subdivision. With the mortgage meltdown, I have seen a high turnover in my neighborhood, though fortunately for now not amongst my immediate neighbors. Lots of FOR SALE signs and a high rate of foreclosures have resulted in a large renter population where once we had homeowners. Nothing wrong with renters, I was one for most of my adult life, but now I see roving gangs of teens on my street seeming to case the neighborhood. "House parties" every night of the week leave the streets crammed with cars and then littered with beer bottles and trash.

A friend of mine who is a constable confirmed the rising rate of crime in my area, stating they received twice as many calls as they did five years ago. The irony is that the city of Houston recently reported the lowest number of homicides in the city since 1965. I guess that is because so many of the gangbangers have followed us to the suburbs. I am seriously considering relocating further out, but I already face an hour commute into town each day. With my job, moving to a small town or out in the boonies is a no-go.

I guess becoming a father has made me a more aware of the dangers out there (read: paranoid) but still, living on alert like this is simply exhausting. Maybe the S has already HTF and we were too busy working two jobs and struggling to make ends meet to notice. Anyway, end of rant.

What I find most disturbing is the violence. Home invasion has replaced burglary. Murder and steal from corpse has replaced robbery. Around Houston we've had an increase of police impersonators engaging in home invasion. That is a nightmare for everyone. Rebel I've taken a few photos myself but it is risky. You could wind up in a confrontation or shot.

I always have a weapon anywhere it is legal to have one. I often have several; had a friend of my daughter ask if I had "a" gun. I said no, my daughter smiled and ask, "how many guns do you have on you daddy". My reply of 3 nearly sent her friend into shock!

I don't like the stored weapon solution because the gun is 'out of position' if you need it. If you can get to it, so can the BG, and it is NOT secure. With no small children in the house that is not that big a deal but if you live in the wrong jurisdiction, a teenager breaking into your house and getting hurt with the gun he found there can send you to jail. If it is not on you or in a safe, you do not control that gun!

Just my not so humble opinion.

I already live deep in the country, 1 hour drive to neartest mall, 30 minutes to nearest Wal-Mart, heck we only have 10 red lights in the whole county and it dosn't matter crime is crazy everywhere. It started out with scrap metal theft, they picked every farmer and land owner clean by last year. Then they started stealing copper out of empty houses. Now they have run out of empty houses so they are moving on to occupied houses and such. Half are the white under 30 crowd who have gotten hooked on perscription pain killers and need to support their habits. The other half are under 30 blacks who think that the white people owe them something for the phlight. Obama and the governmet has really pounded into them what we are calling in the police world as the "Robin Hood" syndrome.Steal from the rich white folks cause they owe you. Even our black deputys complian about the culture that has been building in there community. I have come to the conclusion that there is no stopping the tide now as it is here to stay for the coming future. The I want-to-be left alone middle class section of people is shrinking everday and soon I fear the dirt bags will out number us. The times they are a changing.

The problem we face here in upper Tennessee is the pillheads and they seem to be increasing everyday...they will steal you blind and then come back for more...althrough I haven't been hit yet...and I think it is because most of them know I am retired military and work for Homeland Security and don't have a problem send hot lead down range at them....but what I see in my part of the woods is a bunch of white under 30 punks who wanta be a black gangster..you know the type....hats on sideways....paints hanging off there ass.....and talking all kinds of trash....but I have made it plain to my nephew who nis one of these "I think I'm a bad ass" that if I catch anyone in my house that I don't invite in...they will be leaving in a bodybag and that also includes him.

Ruger

I agree with you. Not only do i worry about certain family members who probably have more intell on my situation than i care for, but i have several problems within my neighborhood. With only 42 homes in this neighborhood there are 2 kids that have been in jail for drug distribution and one other in for grand theft auto. The two closest neighborhoods bring even more problems. Not only do i worry about these punks but i have to worry about their buddies.

actually across the street is a police officer that i grew up with. next to him another police officer. four doors down an fbi agent and my best friend lives 5 doors down. The four of us are very like minded and have the neighborhood pretty much under 24/7 surveillance. One call could bring down a strike force that would make a General smile.

As for close close friend.... I have a .40cal body temp and loaded with 15rds (even in my house). The 870 20 gauge is my back up. 12 rounds of hell fire there. The wife has my back as well.

Pardon my ignorance, Crazy Rebel, but why do you 'pretend' to take a picture of them instead of acutally taking apicture of them? If a crime where to occur in you neighborhood soon after that, that picture could be a lead to the responsible parties. Also, if you were to make a target of yourself because they thought you DID take that picture, it could be a clue to apprehend your attackers. Just wondering why you just pretend...

good deal. now about those darn kids..........

dont let them ruin your spot. it dont take much for that to happen.

maybe a block meeting or something to let the other owners know that there are folks

that are aware of the goings ons. its a comfort to know that you have other people watching

as well as yourself for anything "strange" to happen.

Where I live in the Peoples State of New York it is known as a drug hotbed and welfare hotspot. We have a lot of unemployment also. You would think that under these conditions we would have a lot of problems.

There are about 12,500 people here and another 12,000 right next door, we have a college there also. We had maybe 2 murders and two invasions over the last five years.

With things the way they are here ,I can't believe we don't have more problems. There are a few large cities within a 50 mile radius and sometimes you will see arrest reports in the paper with people from them.

I keep a couple of .45's handy, one upstairs one downstairs and I practice senarios with them,my wife thinks I am having too much fun. But you should have an idea as to how things will work, it does pay to be ready.
