back on track here, ive been scouting the quality and price work of a lot of camping gear.

why? well for the bugout situation. easier to carry and most of which dont take up a lot of room. besides these two qualities, most of your backpacking gear has been well tested and lots of "no holds bared" reviews on the net about them. i tend to take some stuff with me on my kayaks

when out fishing. never know when your gonna have to run aground for safety from a storm or getting lost in the swamps or everglades type places is always possible.

reg5 refuses to ride or drive anything w/o bumbers so can we get 1 of those rascal's with both front and rear bumpers please? bitty blue......baby buggy bumpers or something? ROFLMAO

oh and side view mirrors please. and 1 small air bag......to go.

hey meddle not sure how bad the knees are but i have some things for you to consider. I am speaking from experience here as i have spent the last 17 years standing on concrete for 10 hours at a time. Lets say that i could lose 60 pounds and be where i was when i got married 28 years ago. I have tried to lose weight but have not been very successful. I wear running shoes at work and use "superfeet" insoles. The shoes are tossed out every 3-4 months as they break down and will not offer the support i need. If i had not started taking Glucosamine and chondroitin supplement about ten years ago i would probably given up on backpacking. Last item i use while hiking is a set of hiking poles. Not only do they take stress of the knees but they offer a good upper body workout. you can find a cheap pair at walmart. they work as well as the $100 apiece brands. Good luck with those knees and keep moving.

 

have you tried the caveman diet?also called ancestor,plus others.our ancestors ate mostly fat 20% protein 75% sugars 5% only thing was you need 45 grams of fiber.they only ate fruit in season only.so keep calories from sugars to 1/2 or less of what you burn,you'll lose weight.or get book on (gi) or glusomine index.

Yes! takes a few weeks before it kicks in but it sure made a difference for me. missing a day isn't bad but if you miss a week you're back to hurting and want to go back on them. I have a TEOTWAWKI supply ... it made that big a difference for me.

im thinking of getting on them myself to be honest. im 43 in 2 days and have lived a very bone

knocking, joint jolting life. things hurt sometimes that i forgot i even had. lol

im currently stocking vitamin's as we speak. i might as well get started on these too.

Hide gets expensive quick.

 

Funny. I tend to spend about $0.50/hide. I think that's what I pay per hunting round. I mean, if you're gonna test your SHTF skills, why not go all out. I doubt that I'll keep my family in food for long with venison, should we get there, but I'm pretty sure I can get one or two hides into use before the deer become scarce. After that - dang. I'd hate try to cover a tipi with squirrel hides...

LOL... I bet it would take a few..... thousand..... squirrel to prepare a decent lodge cover.

Another option for obtaining hides is contacting a deer processing shop. They normally sell to a tannery, but I'm sure they might be persuaded to sell them to a local market. Then you can practice tanning also. I know there are commercial solutions available for tanning or you can go with brain tan, or any other "old school" procedure you wish to try.

Yes the brains contain a chemical (not sure what) that will cure the hide into usable leather. In my experience, it doesn't do well if you want to keep the hair/fur on but it will give you a very nice leather to work with.
