made vaseline cottonballs and worked on a firestarter altoids tin kit. so far it has matches, lighter, cottonballs. im thinking of adding some lint and perhaps a piece of newspaper. once my magnnesium firestriker gets here i may have to change things a bit. im trying to make my kits as portable as possible, without sacrificing its integrity, so i may swap out my toiletries for travel sizes or even sample sizes. that is of course my bug out bag of which im speaking. put in a call to my big brother and am waiting for him to call me back about ammo for the 30.06 savage we are going to buy. my dad said that my brother would know better about what would be best. im trying to pace myself with my prep purchases but my initial instinct is to go out and get everything i need right away. im going to purchase an esbit folding stove here soon. im doing up a master list of everything i think i may need. list is going well, i actually have a lot of the necessities already. feeling pretty confident that i have things under control. still need to stockpile water and food staples but im getting there.

This might be a little overboard. I have a bug in plan, a 72hour bug out plan/location, and early this year i added a permanent bug out/retreat location. I have been slowly adding to the new location to make it bug in worthy. Yesterday i was able to add a 72 hour bug out location from the new retreat. It might sound as if i am spreading things thin, but i do like multi layer plans of action. You know just in case.

well yesterday i bought some sporks, some hats and gloves, even a size large enough to fit hubby, and they were all on clearance. bought some socks for bug out bag. added ivory soap to my bug out bag as it works good as a laundry detergent. grabbed some bathroom wipes too. bought a deck of waterproof playing cards and an activity book for my youngest son. i am reworking my edc bag and my bov bag, as i bought a new purse and it wouldnt fit all the stuff i had in the other bag. basically i split the bags in two, and now i have kit for car. i deviced several lists including a bug in kit, an evac bag, a bug out bag, car kit, and then things i will keep at bug out location, ie my parents house. my basic idea is to try and stay here as long as we can, but have enough supplies to take with me and that i have stashed at bol to survive if we had to leave. looking for a place i can get a toilet seat to fit on a 5 gallon pail. made plans to purchase blankets from cheaper than dirt. i know where i can get most of the rest of the items on my list.

This thread is so motivational. I love hearing what everybody else is thinking about and taking care of. Thank you all.

This weekend we mylar bagged our first two buckets of rice and beans for long term storage. Dehydrated some strawberries and bananas. Repotted my vegetables. I purchased some heirloom seeds from ebay and put them right in the freezer until I was ready to plant. some of the seeds came up in less than 48 hours and in one week are too big for the little greenhouse thingy I used so had to repot already. Some haven't sprouted at all yet though. I also cleared some shelves so I can get my food storage organized a little better. It was a fun weekend.

Gillie, how are prices on ebay for heirlooms? I use a few seed companies and prices normally range from $1.50-3.00 for a packet; depending on vegetable and site. I use Sustainable Seeds the most, but Bountiful gardens seem good also. They all offer free tips and advice on their sites also.

I spent the weekend doing the mundane side of prepping: Inspecting and re-supplying my bug out bags. I replaced all the D cell battery stuff with lighter and smaller battery types, which made a huge difference in space and weight in two of my bags.

I had the grandson (age 5) helping. He would sample the food and drink stuff, and let me know if it was time to replace them. We finally are retiring some of the MRE stuff - the kid tells me the M&Ms are "hard". The date code was 1990!

I got 38 varieties of heirloom seeds for $22.99 plus free shipping. Thank you for sharing those sites. I'll check them out. There are more seeds that I need.

Seems like a good deal. I ordered 90+ packs of seeds Saturday. Alot of veggies and about 9 herbs. I already have about 200 cherry tree seeds which will be planted around some properties. My mother in law has a seed catalog for fruit trees about getting dwarf tree package of 10 trees for $50 (if I remember correct).

Got my new backpack in the mail last night, and spent an hour fitting it to me, then loading it with stuff to see if it sits right. Its an external frame pack (Firefly by Outdoor Products, in Moss color, $65 from Amazon.com). Its very easy to remove the pack from the frame (the straps and hip belt attach to the frame, not the pack). Removing the pack leaves you with a way to haul bulky loads like fuel cans, water, animal carcass, whatever. I wanted the extra options you get from an external frame, and the customizable fit seemed like a good idea. It was money well spent.

Now wife wants one for herself, same model.

I have a backpack, but not sure how I feel about using it. My boss brought it back from 2-week drill and it's digital camo, with National Guard on it. This close to Ft. Hood, no one thinks twice about military stuff, but I wonder how it would do if I were elsewhere. Meanwhile, I'm piling things in a small bin.

I found my pocketknife and put it into my daily tote. Also added some granola bars to the bin.

found some of the items i "lost" in my house, like a can of fix a flat, the ac to dc coverter and the dc to ac converter, bought a bug out vehicle/ hubbys work vehicle. i bought hubby an 11 inch hunting knife with a paracord wrapped handle for fathers day. found a bunch of tealight candles i had stashed in bedroom and lost. also found my collapsible water container, and my ice cleats. found another whistle as well. recieved another multitool in the mail from an auction i won. also recieved my folding trowel today, so will be adding that to the stash. going to ask hubby if he still has the cigarette lighter powered cooler that he used in his trucker days. also going to take a look in the shed and see if i can find the cb radio that he had too. found two more flashlights, one aa batteries the other a shake light. gonna see if i can find the other emergency triangle that i set up and forgot where i put it (that happens a lot around here). one of these days i need to take inventory of food supplies so that i may figure out what else i need.

Ordered Heirloom Seeds for a small garden from Annie's Heirloom Seeds. Researched a number of the products recommended in Survival Cache articles, and found I could acquire quite a number of items for $150. total thru Amazon.com Will be trying to set that amount aside this month. Thanks to Survival Cache for keeping me motivated. It's amazing how far we've come in such a short time.

Jessie, beprepared.com sells the toilet seat you're looking for.

Filled up my gas tank, got 40lbs of cat food and more kitty litter. Filled up my spare water containers. Got one of the most important preps: Ice cream!

I sure hope this solar storm is a non-event, but you can't be sure. This is after all why we are prepping. Nothing I'm doing right now is going to waste, just bringing it forward a little bit.

today i had to do some running around, so i went and purchased some of my more miscellaneous items. grabbed a cartons worth of the e cigarettes that my mother in law uses. grabbed a clothesline. jumper cables for bug out vehicle, a camp axe, foldable shovel, and gallon size as well as the big bag ziploc bags to store clothes in. found a collapsible cup as well. also picked up one self contained mess kit. will be getting more of those, i figured id add to that weekly considering i got it at walmart. im adding to my kit, a little at a time.

also added a water bob bathtub storage drinking water kit, this one came with 3 65 gallon bags and i only paid 53 dollars. and for six dollars more i added a siphon hose to manually pump the water out. i got those items out of a turn of good luck, because some other things i purchased fell through and i got a refund. otherwise i wouldnt have gotten them right then.
