How to Build an Underground Bunker

Recommended Posts

For those new to this thread who are reading this first - Mike, the owner, dug it out from 1995 to 1997 by hand with no mechanized equipment to help him. This was at 10,000 feet elevation with short summer seasons. The most expensive consideration was buying concrete (about 100 bags of 80 lb concrete) to the total of $1000 - $1500.

Unfortunately there are no pictures (that I am aware of) of the 1995-97 digging as this was before digital cameras and the builder was on his own with no-one to take pictures. (I don't think he began taking pictures until 1999-2000?).

The plan (not followed to the letter, but you'll get the picture)

Roof goes into the Mountain! Maybe one day they'll be another tunnel going to the Cabin Build (that's another story though ;) )

The design and plans shown in the vid are of a small pole shelter triple-clad with roof logs and sheeting (waterproof).

This allows the weight of concrete and earth on top for the overhead. For the walls logs and steel 'H' Beams along with more sheeting (waterproof) then earth.

The internal space resembles an 'L' shape as recommended for fallout / blast shelters. This is small but incredibly strong and resistant to cave-ins, earthquakes, disasters. The shelter is multi-functional with two bunks and two stoves providing heat.

A main entrance with a steel blast door and an emergency exit / trapdoor are installed.

The year round temperature is about 35 - 45 degrees without being heated.  The bunker has been featured on multiple social-sites and Mike is often contacted by television companies for it to be shown on mainstream broadcasts. The Colony short-listed him for appearing on the show but ultimately another was chosen.

However when the challenging conditions are revealed to TV companies (short accessible seasons, snow fall requiring snow-mobiles etc) the producers normally go for an easy access bunker elsewhere and underground shelters that are more fancy.

This is doable by any able-bodied male (or female if driven enough) with the right location.

The location inspired a fictional film which was shot at Mike's Bunker called After The Fall / Raiders of the Mountain Hold:

I'd have many more pictures to show you BUT the retarded hosting site has crashed / won't let me upload any more pictures. :(

If you have any questions, please ask and I'll try and get a bit more specific. :)

The Next Big Project!

does he know you can make a flame thrower for about 20 bucks ? Molotov cocktail anyone ----shaken not stirred.

Indeed he does, in fact if you watch this video one is used against it. ;) However his roots go deep and it would take more than a flamethrower to flush him out. ;)

Watch this video!

Getting close enough to use one against his location is another matter and might send most scurrying back down the mountain...

I do not deny the usefulness of a root cellar but a Flamethrower also removes the oxygen so that is the other issue.

I good bunker requires a few exits far removed from the original entrance this allows escape or circling it is always good to have dead fall to cover at least one exit..

Remember a hall is a shooting gallery so having side cuts or building as an X concussive effect will rattle anyones cage that is in there.

Holes are good to cache some gear defense from being fired upon but are not for permanent defensive position.

General Patton stated, "Fixed fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of man".

Studying we find that fortresses and battlements invite siege unless the bunker, cave or castle has enough enclosed area to sustain groth of food holding feeding of livestock and an ample supply of water a  force can wait them out.

Today we have accurate weapons easily at 100 yards a single individual can lay in wait and eliminate anyone exiting the bunker.

as well using compressed heavier than air gas at night could suffocate any inhabitants or chemical .

this has always been the trouble with defenses or habitation civil war, soldiers came and took the able to fight or burned everything to prevent their enemy use of it.

then there is the balance of habitants to many the area will soon show trails as people will have to hunt farms etc too few the work to much.

in the last year 1,000 year flooding has proved that bunkers may not be usable everywhere.

Building with stone in an earthquake zone so many different defensive construction plans need to be considered well before implementing them.

i prefer the dig a hole fill it with sandbags cover with rebar and pour concrete over the top and fill it in with dirt and let it dry. then remove the sandbags and you have the perfect underground shelter, storm cellar , bomb shelter,  mausoleum . takes five days to do using a backhoe and 2000 sandbags and stovepipe

    • Hey all, This is sort of cool (okay really cool) and maybe some of you have heard about it because it's been plastered over FOX and mentioned by POTUS as well as other conservative-leaning news people (Huckabee, Diamond/Silk, Candace Owens, Mark Levin, etc..) and politicians. #walkaway is a movement based mostly on social media. Started last year, by Brandon Straka (pronounced Strawk - like "straw" with a "k"). He's a former 2016 HRC-voting hair stylist, from NE, now in NYC, homosexual, liberal who began to question the MSM and what he was hearing. He got really frustrated as he began to do his own research. Anyway, after having his own awakening to the lies of MSM he had been following, he began an online testimonial campaign in which former liberals can post their #walkaway stories, written or video. Many are now on the "Trump Train." Many have simply left the Left. Still, others have always been non-Left and are members in support. The amazing thing is how many different people from all walks of life are beginning to wake up. Lots are not conservative on all issues, but all have a love for the USA and dislike the demonization of open political and social thinkers and speakers. This group gives solace to people scared to voice their conservative opinions or views for fear of negative professional or personal responses. It now has budding smaller groups in all 50 states and an online discussion group where people discuss current topics or issues (WITH no vitriol, gasp).  Here's the original video from Brandon.  www.youtube.com/watch?v=51UGcghHZsk This man, Brandon has a unique, stylish, well-articulated voice to help move people "in hiding" out into the open and not be silenced. Pretty much any video Brandon does is great. Here is the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/OFFICIALwalkawaycampaign/ As I see fights erupt online, I simply leave #walkaway in the comments. Brandon has a goal of 1 million members! The liberal media has called this campaign "Russian Bots" and "paid actors." It's not!!!
    • thanks to all who  have served or are serving our great country....243 years in the making....   Trump did a good job today thanking each branch of our military and a long time coming salute to the coast guard too....
    • I can imagine food prices going up this Fall or Winter. Corn is used for live stock feed, & us humans consume a lot of corn based products, as well as corn based biofuel. I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the mid-west of America, which is flooded by water. Where corn  & other crops are normally grown there. Farmers are quite worried about this years growing season. Time to stock up on extra food if you can, if you haven’t already. Stack it high, stack it deep. Store the foods that you normally eat. What ever the  amount of food you’ve stored,  try to double it if possible. Better extra safe, than sorry.
