Post your best on-line deals for ammo

Recommended Posts

Anybody got a good local store in the Houston area they recommend price-wise for ammo? Other than WalMart and sometimes Academy, everywhere else I go around here the ammo prices are a joke. Most of the other big box stores still have some stock, but it is because the pricing in CRAZY. Yes, I am talking about you, Gander Mountain. I would like to give my business to a local seller but I just can't find any that are not sky high.

Bill

http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/specials.php seems decent if they have what you want. They are online but I think they have a storefront in Brenham. There is also a REI store on the northwest side. Never been there but they might be better or as good as the Bass Pro Shops here on the south side.

Hope this helps.

What is up with .308? I can't find anywhere for a decent price and all of the surplus has apparently dried up. Most of the places I checked on-line look to be running low on the cheap Russian stuff too.

Don't know what you call a good price but I just got 500 .308 Wolf from Sportsmansguide for Less than $200 including shipping.

Thanks, Cap. I used to run over to Brenham on a regular basis to pick up from Ammotogo and they are really nice folks, but they do not seem to have the same prices from just six months ago. Plus, they don't appear to be getting any more surplus ammo, which was a real plus for them.

Yes, Autonomous, I am noticing the increase for mags as well. Those 99cent G3 surplus magazines from CheaperThanDirt sure look like a steal now. They fit my CETME great and most came still in new wrappers.

Hey guys, Palmetto is running a special this weekend with free shipping. For big orders, you guys know that can get to be a big number.

Also, Numrich is running 25% off on all MAS parts this weekend. If you have a MAS 36, 49, or 49/56, now is a great time to get some spares.

Sorry, the Tula doesn't run too well in my .45s. I love Tula's 7.62x39 and so does my SKS (or it did until I lost it and all my other firearms in that tragic boating accident I had out at the lake). I did pick up some Silver Bear there in .308 Win, which my rifles run flawlessly. It really depends on the weapon's preferences.

I have really cut back on CTD in recent months since they started opening all these different warehouses. Shipping goes up even higher if you order from more than one. I whined about this elsewhere, but living in Texas (but not near Ft. Worth) means I get to pay shipping and taxes on everything I order from them.

So today I took a couple boxes of the 'Tula' .45 230grain FMJ to the local indoor range. I knew these have a steel case, but they ALSO have a STEEL CORE! THe guys that run the range asked me not to use them. THey were worried about these rounds penetrating the barrier of the gun range ... and going into the street!

so does this mean... I got Armor piercing rounds for $13 a box?

ANd the Steel casings... they dont load in the mag as smoothly as brass. THey have more friction or something. And more powder smoke.

YES, NavyVet, the Tulsa definitely leaves a smoke signature like nobody's business. Most indoor ranges don't want you using steel core for the rreason you cited.

All that crappy powder residue... i had to go over my gun 3x before it was as clean as i wanted.

After leaving the range, my forearms were COVERED in actual ASH/dust size pieces of crap powder residue.

Bill and Navy,

Actually it may not be 'penetrating' the backstop as much as it is the likelihood that those steel core rounds will spark. Indoor ranges have unburned powder all over the place. I have heard of fires being started by steel rounds that spread very quickly. In either case, it is the range owners call.

I've found that the old 'evil empire' ammo is DIRTY and burns very erratically. Works in the AK series and some in bolt guns but it does take cleaning and care.

Thanks, Capt. I did not think of that. Silver Bear has been the best of the Russian ammo I have found with regard to powder and reliability but still not as good as the American or Serbian (Privi) made. You get what you pay for, after all.

Getting ammo from an Internet site? Wow, it must be awesome living in Free America. I live in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts and most Internet ammo suppliers refuse to ship ammo to this Socialist State! And y’all better watch your politicians closely or sooner than later, you to will find yourself behind enemy lines!

Coastie,

we are, sir, we are. The TEA party is taking over the Republican Party here in Texas. We have a lot of politicians running scared. It does feel good to have THEM worried for a change.:D

I have to say that some of the best deals i have found recently have been at my local Walmart, at least for handgun ammo. Otherwise, the Palmetto promo recently where they paid the shipping was a huge score, since they were also running sales. I estimate I saved $40-$50 just on shipping. Score, since that's almost enough for a tank of gas.

Good old Woburn. I haven't been there in years. I am surprised the state even allows the sale of ammunition there without a background check and a ten day waiting period. Oh, and a note from your local Police Chief attesting to the fact you make annual contributions to the charity of their choice.

Cap’n Bart, when my wife wants to retire we will be heading for Texas! I have always said that, when the rest of the nation becomes socialist morons, Texas will STILL be Texas. And I love that!

Wolf, in Oxford they force people to register their cat and, of course, there is a tax associated with that registration. Also, here in Sturbridge, if you want to get any information about your home (say, the amount of sewer betterment remains) you must go and get the ‘okay’ that all of your town taxes are current. They told me that I couldn’t get the amount remaining on my betterment because I no longer registered my dog with the town and pay the appropriate fee. I told them I thought that I didn’t need to register my DEAD dog, but thank you for caring! A-holes! I live in a town and State of total a-holes.

Darn, excoastie. That is wild. Here in Houston, I think pit bulls are a requirement in some neighborhoods the way they keep eating kids here.

BTW, I am amazed at the variation in what one WalMart will carry as opposed the one around the corner from it. I picked up a 100 round value pack of .223 and a couple of boxes of 30 Carbine at a Walmart less than five miles from the one next to my house, where they have never heard of such things.

Texas Bill, around here, WalMart sells ammo but they have very little variation of caliber. They only stock they ‘normal’ and have no ‘strange’ calibers (not in 7.62, etc.). If you want 9mm, 40, 45 ACP, 22 lr, etc WalMart is a good place.

Luckily, at the foot of the hill is Bron’s Classic Firearms. John, the owner, concentrates on military firearms and stocks all 7.62, 50 BMG, etc. His prices aren’t bad but I could find it cheaper on the Internet.
