So I'm finally back into prepping again. lol. My house is all electric. I've been looking for some old oil lamps, but man they want a fortune at the flea markets. I was in one the other day and picked up a full Coleman 1lb propane cylinder and a Turner LP5 for $12.50. I thought that was a pretty good deal. What do you guys use? Where can I get mantles and such for this lantern? Will the standard Coleman mantles and stuff from Wal-Mart work?

Not sure about the mantles for that model. I have a coleman propane lantern, a Dietz lantern I bought from Cabelas, and a cheap hurricane lantern. We also have a ton of candles. Thats honestly what we use the most. I like saving the fuel for cooking or heat

Our whole house is electric also we use 12V DC current powered by 1.5K watt solar panels and 600watt wind turbine and a large battery bank. We used a CFB and LED lights. I do have some candles for emergency if it every comes down to it. Oh we also do have a 4.5K watt generator for back-up as well. Cooking and heating is done with propane.

I've been thinking about a wind mill of some sort for power. I've got a buddy that deals in those Northstar batteries and i thought about building a system.

They look like the typical little white mantles used in the Coleman stuff. I wasn't sure if they're the same or not. We have a lot of candles too. Can you refill the 1lb cylinders?

Yes, you can. There is a little valve you can buy for a couple bucks that will let you refill from a 20 lb tank. It is easy.

I recently switched over to Peerless mantles. They seem to hold up better than the Coleman's and don't get those little holes when you burn them off like many Coleman's do.

Thanks for the info!!!! A guy i work with was just telling me that he thought you can get a valve to fill them with. I may go to the gas station this week and grab a 20lb cylinder. Cool deal!!!!

    • Great thread. My son is attending a higher-end university in VT. His tuition is over $60k a year - can you imagine getting out of school with almost  a quarter million dollars' debt and just starting at the bottom of the barrel? I started working construction when I was 20, learned an incredible amount, worked my ass off, and now I have a comfortable job with zero college debt.
    • Yep, lay low, gather intel, keep your signature as small as possible, to the leaving and the dead. Keep an eye out for masses of people - hopefully there's a network of some kind to give you a heads up a few hours before they descend on you, so you can get a start on a secondary BOL. Run, don't stand and fight.
