What's important to YOU

Recommended Posts

Here's a thought experiment for you.

Pretend, for a minute or two, that you are in college.

In regards to everything you know today, and your personal beliefs about your ideal way to live,

what college courses do you find most important? In regards to finance, general knowledge, and survival.

In other words, if you could go back 10, 20, 30 years ago, and kick yourself in the ass for not studying a certain thing, what would that be?

We had a fantastic geography department, and I took "environmental geography" (which was mostly about climate change and the way the earth changes over millions of years) instead of something useful like cartography. Can you imagine how much it would help to not only be thoroughly educated on reading maps, but also know how to CREATE them? Depending on what event triggers TEOTWAWKI, geography could go through radical changes, let alone the radical changes in population centers and travel routes that will follow. Minerology from the geology department would have also been a useful thing to learn.

Overall, I wish I had learned something practical and medical (EMT, nursing) instead of majoring in political science because, well, political science doesn't exactly do much except look good on a law school application. It would have been quite smart to learn human physiology instead of sociology, or even to have exchanged a traditional four-year university for study on herbalism and holistic medicine, for example.

And my other big regret is that I didn't take Spanish seriously, nor did I stick with it long enough to become proficient. It would sure be handy to be able to communicate easily in Spanish, especially in an emergency!

I can communicate in Spanish and it ain't all that and a bag of chips {tortilla chips that is}

herbal medicine well the problem there is about 75% of the medicinal roots leaves mosses and extracts

are not from here during a prolonged incident your bag of tricks would shrink quite a bit.

Mineralogy is great but takes travel as not any one state has all the minerals but it is good to know.

now EMT special skills would be a great course it takes 1+ years and you do ride a longs and can get practical experience.

herbalism could still be used also there are many books and information for free so it is still viable.

everyone should be at least an EMT basic skill level

basic use of hand tools and safety

know basic construction

basic welding

auto maintenance and minor repair / trouble shooting

understand disinfecting & have a food handlers certificate

farming growing and understanding how to use an almanac and germination temps what are winter summer and fall gardens.

know how to cook from scratch basic stuff like rice baked potatoes simple cakes box items.

camping skills wild flora & fauna recognition fire safety survival & rescue fishing hunting basics map and compass course.

military structure recognition, marching group activities with Government bill of rights and our constitution.

rope work and knot tying

water safety swimming / life guard rescue skills

taking care of children the elderly and disabled

biking, driving a car and a moped or motorcycle if only a familiarization course.

firearms safety and shooting skills CMP anyone you do not have to agree with having one but you do need to know about them.

basic language skills in at least 2 languages of this list Chinese, French, Farsi, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian or Spanish.

chemistry

mathematics geometry and fractions could be taught in some of these as they do apply

geography

history

the problem is all this should be taught in school the languages in grammar school and over the years the rest as they are

responsible enough to do so.

people die every day because they cannot swim why not?

because no one can apply basic first aid

they are endangered due to ignorance of boating safety or having safety equipment before swimming boating or diving.

the rest of this list can be taught in all schools in one class and can do six in a year kids are not dumb they are ignorant

because they have not been taught them it takes less than a week to teach how to nail measure and cut wood in a month

they can do most any box furniture project or do a custom closet.

I always hear of how we need to raise a child's self esteem YOU CANNOT DO THAT they have to by accomplishing goals

It is like sex if you show it the ones who have never had that experience have no concept of the reality of it or the

unexpected consequences or interpersonal relationship entanglements I alway thought you should show for sex education

you should show a great porn video then Looking for Mr. good bar and then fatal attraction and War of the roses then explain sex is not simple people are complicated and some are crazy and you better use your real brain and be mature enough to deal

with the mental moral and psychological issues. and sex has repercussions.

we waste time with crap in school children are a sponge they can learn much more as children than as teen agers

and music if nothing else they should be able to play a few simple tunes on a recorder {flute} not everyone is able but hey

try it if you excel go for it

and it would not hurt if they could know and recognize the wonders of the world and some art works like the thinker

the Mona Lisa and visit a museum at least once a year and have a test on what the saw and did.

simple sports for coordination hand and eye and exercise.

it would not hurt to teach them how to wear a hat and pants and coordinate colors use a washing machine and dryer

and maybe an iron.

OC as for you zero in on your ONE idea that can make you a living and live it breath it immerse yourself in it

know every facet all the history be able to name drop and understand the science behind it.

that is how you attract investors or potential clients just in your own mind become more that just you.

Too much of the new stuff is contorted in mysticism a friend was a masseuse and got into raki or how ever you spell it

and her clients shrunk due to her thought it was better but her clients did not agree she had been influenced by her mentor.

She was also a practitioner of herbalism and was very knowledgeable and helped people she made it a pseudo religion

and that hurt her only her eccentric clients stayed with her.

just a group of random thoughts I had considered training children for money I am not independently wealthy,

basic skills have a list and a target of what they can accomplish at the end of your training so parents have confidence

and chose you to train them in other skills.

College study in the context of Prep and SHTF ?

To be proficient in pretty much any 'trade skill', and knowing how to capitolize on that skill post-SHTF would be useful.

Trade skills: Metal work, Electrician, auto/diesel mechanic etc. Pretty much anything now days that has a 'Union' attached to it.

i do all kinda of IT technical stuff. Even had my own lil business for a short while. But computers are seen as more of an unneccesary luxury item in tough financial times. Not like a fridg. you need that.. but not really a PC. (unless ur like me.. i do everything on pc, i dont watch tv.) Anyway.. my point is that I know residential IT work will not be in high demand. So i spend alot of time honing the electrician skills and know how. And still use AutoCAD from my architecture days.

An MBA may be nice and all. An MBA holder probably makes more $$$ than me. But that MBA and such related classes wont help at all post-SHTF.

My brother has a Masters Metallurgy and works for one of those companies that produces the silicon substrates for computer chips and solar panels and such. Chemistry was his thing in high School, while i initially went architecture.

However i dont think you should plan your life (what to take in college) around SHTF. you dont have to go to college to learn skills that will help post-SHTF. Go to college to have a career, but if it help post-SHTF, so be it.

Anything Medical, Law Enforcement, Trade Skills just to name a few

Gotta agree with Navy.

In post-SHTF you would be better off as a generalist in various building trades and crafts. Some of the exceptions that I can see are the medical field; EMT, military medics, doctors, surgeons, dentists.

Knowing how to make beer and hard liquors will also be a plus.

Fascinating thoughts. I've always said I wouldn't do anything different as I basically like the way my life turned out. With that as a given I'm surprised at what has been important and what hasn't. Although I've studied quite a bit of quantum mechanics in several decades I've never found a quantum that I needed to repair!

I needed this humanities course to complete my degree program so I took a philosophy course offering in Logic. Symbolic logic is a study of how to think and of the fallacies people use. Fascinating course and more useful than I could have ever imagined. The Artillery School at Ft. Sill taught me to be a surveyor along with land navigation and survival skills. I love physics and astronomy but from a survivalist point of view a bit more geology and chemistry might have been in order.

The good news is that you don't need a diploma to be educated. Read like they did in the 1800's, read the good stuff. With the internet and Kindles and $.99 books it is amazing what is available. Right now I'm looking at the pre-Indian history of the Americas. The 'old ones' can teach us a very great deal. I'm studying the flora and fauna of my area. I was always jealous of the 'Renaissance Man' who could do almost everything and was knowledgeable in most areas. Learning to be that kind of an individual is what makes an 'education'. The advantage of college is that it exposes you to areas you might not otherwise investigate.

As to degrees for survival friendly jobs, I'd look at jobs that allowed me to be outside a great deal. Park work, field biology, field geology, agricultural fields, etc. are places where you can learn to cooperate with nature rather than trying to work against natural law. (FYI - you always loose that particular conflict.) No degree is perfect but some are less valuable than others. For survival purposes, History is better than English lit, geography is better than accounting, poly sci is not nearly as good as anthropology, etc.

You don't NEED college but you can take advantage of it if it is available. No one should be satisfied to be uneducated and with modern technology it isn't necessary. Ever since the printing press and now the internet, education is available to ANYONE who is willing to have an open mind.

Just my not so humble opinion.

As always, great points, Capt Bart! It's also why a college degree does not necessarily indicate that someone is well-educated. There are people who go through college and just check things off to get a degree, as opposed to immersing themselves in subjects and thoroughly learning. And I'd like to add that some of the smartest, most competent people I know don't have degrees - but they do have common sense (which is more valuable than just about anything) and have spent a lot of time doing hands-on learning in a few areas of expertise. One of my cousins barely got through high school - he hated being stuck indoors - but he's a logger and that guy could survive anything because he knows the woods like nobody else, has an uncanny sense of direction and spatial relationships, and can fix or build just about any kind of machine or building you can imagine. He also loves growing things and raising animals, and his two sons are learning all of this stuff from him.

I'd like to add that while I do wish I had pursued other educational opportunities, I'm not unhappy that I got the education I did. Political Science isn't in the least survival-helpful, but actually could be useful after initial crises are over because politics really is about determining how decision-making and resources are distributed. For a course of study, it was a great way to be exposed to history, philosophy, and economics. I've been exposed to ethics, logic, religion, US history, and more.

A side note on what Capt said Google held a contest a while back offering a few large chunks of money to innovative projects. One of the winners is http://www.khanacademy.org/ who's mission is to make quality education available for free to anyone. They wont give you a degree but lectures (At least the calculus ones I watched) are very high quality and easy to understand.

There are also 575 online courses offered for free from major universities here: http://www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses

And I love the TED series: http://www.ted.com/

A similar thing from the UK is the Do Lectures: http://dolectures.com/

OC,

Agreed. NO degree is wasted or useless, well unless it is some of the "PC" nonsense; I have seen a few that had me scratching my head but ..... The formal education experience is like everything else, an experience and all experience can be useful.

Newt needs to retire he misses the ball is so PC and he hates Trump and is part of Trump's inner party backstabbing.
    • Tonight a total lunar eclipse Sunday night, the Earth will slide directly between the moon and the sun, creating a total lunar eclipse. There won’t be another until 2021. It will also be the year’s first super moon.

DRC’s eastern North Kivu and Ituri provinces. Goma is a major transportation hub, with roads and highways that lead to Rwanda. “These are crossroad cities and market town. Ebola in Goma is a nightmare scenario WHO and DRC’s health ministry are scrambling to prevent.Together, they’ve deployed a rapid response team. • Ideas cannot die. look at socialism it has been proven wrong, dangerous and allows for no independent thinking, it is rigid and uncompromising. Religious ideology is just as rigid, there is no compromising with radical thought in a religious sect of any religion. Syria is my point we have been there 17 years we have trained 100,000 troops and police and they can't mop up the rest of ISIS ? This is the exact problem we had in Vietnam we trained and trained the native people that were being systematically murdered by the communists and although some were hard chargers most just wanted to stay alive, ignorant that once their enemies took control they would be murdered along with their families or worked to death in reeducation camps.  The problem is most Americans are unschooled in the ways of travel and immigration, we are told that our presence there protects us here. That is a wall of B.S. the real issue is if we do not allow them to travel here what are they going to do ? Build a Navy ? an Air force ?  or charter cruise ships, the answer is no they and their ideology is held in check by distance and their ability to travel PERIOD. Our border is a weak point without a barrier and only allowing people through properly staffed crossing we can neither keep out dangerous foreign nationals or contraband and contraband is anything from illegally captured endangered species brought in and sold Ancient artifacts fruit that may have insect eggs that would destroy our native crops counterfeit money that undermines our currency it is also a gateway for the transfer of sensitive information that could not be sent via electronic transmission without leaving a trail that could expose a spy ring in our country.  Human trafficking is a misnomer it is real but, a whore belonging to a gang in Mexico ordered to cross and set up shop in the U.S. is not going to buck or run once here they know that our prisons are full of illegal alien gang members that once on the street will hunt them down and murder them. Because the news is no longer information but a hit squad for political ambitions, we are not being explained the minutia of human trafficking there are people being sold for all sorts of reasons including children for the sex trade for cheap labor and to divert border agents from drug carriers crossing the border, so as a diversion. History of Slavery in this country knows about the underground railroad consider this tactic in reverse planting people on our side of the border to facilitate a network to move human beings and make money off of the illegals that use this service, it would also allow for each group to identify in those groups those they can turn into sex minions male and female!!! Personally have intervened through a church were we bought tickets to get abused people back to their families that were being controlled by gangs or unscrupulous people here, it does not have to be a gang small groups of unaffiliated people can act like a gang instilling fear and threats of far reaching reprisal toward them or their families if they attempt to run, this is no different than the tactics used by countries like North Korea if you escape your family will at least put in prison more likely murdered off a few at a time to terrorize others not to attempt to escape. I am just as sure that some people that have turned here have been coerced by threats to family overseas not many but, this is a tactic used to control individuals long distance. If your thinking only the middle east think again we have Jamaican gangs Chinese Russian a few versions of those Vietnamese and any other nation you can name has members of their military or gangs here working toward some end  be it clandestine, industrial or infiltrating here.  One of the cracks in our system is the fact we do not have proper internal security, trash or garbage is GOLD industrial spies love garbage as much as pigs love it, a wealth of information is contained within discarded documents it is easy to attach a device to computer systems to copy or duplicate communications forwarding them to off site.  A single individual working as janitorial staff can wreak havoc. I know of one incident where a companies data base and confidential customer lists were stolen and used to start a foreign owed company, if they would steal a companies information why, would they not steal your information like bank or trading accounts. The earth is not flat Nancy Pelosi and her henchmen are aware of the threats to our economy, individuals property companies and private information and don't care as long as they can maintain power they can and do put you at risk economically and physically every day an illegal murders someone mostly we only hear of police officers but, thousands of other crimes are not explained to us rape theft home invasions we see them in the local papers on local police blotters but fail to make the connection because people like Nancy tell us it's not true it is an attempt by the right to fear monger. Waiting on one of your family or coworkers to be a victim is insane the truth is all around all people have to do is accept it.
    • Something fishy going on ! Here is a excerpt at the bottom of this post from a PDF document you can find it at  Alaska Dept dot gov Somewhere we are not being informed about the Salmon Halibut and cod numbers fished in Alaskan waters supposedly even the crab fishing is not near previous levels . All this is conjecture I have been fishing for facts and they are not obvious or easy to find but this document seems to say that the amount of returning salmon back to their home rivers and streams are low enough to warrant closing fishing. so let us say we close this year is next going to have an increase in the numbers or is the decline caused by a factor not mentioned in this information release ?  Roughly 8 years since Fukashima Diichi power plant disaster and numerous reports of catches in the pacific are low compared to other years and some fish are not healthy a few ships have decided to check on their own I leave the type of checking up to the reader nonetheless what I can find is a mass of information or disinformation but not much on facts. Fear mongering at this point I leave that to others but I do want to know should I avoid buying pacific caught fish or not. I have no faith in information because there are too many, that have a vested interest in being given time to bail out of investments or to prevent friendly foreign fishers and economies from financially collapsing. I do wonder if this will cause overfishing of the Japan and China sea and straights as far as I can decern those waters are not effected, but fish are not confined by geography. Let me know / post any information on this thread. I am really interested to see what information we can get or see from east of the Philippines ,Java Fiji, Indonesia Micronesia over to Hawaii and up to the Alaskan coast.   ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME DIVISION OF COMMERCIAL FISHERIES NEWS RELEASE Douglas Vincent Lang ,Acting Commissioner Forrest R.
