The One Gun

Recommended Posts

What firearm do you start with if you are starting your collection from scratch?

In a recent thread, "Rifles for the apocalypse", there were a lot of good points brought up. Capt Bart said a few things that kept me thinking, and there is a difference in the questions of what "rifle" and what "gun" would you have for SHTF. I even have a different answers for TEOTWAWKI.

So where would you start at if you were starting over?

I humbly propose a 12 gauge and for me that would be the Mossberg 500. This is mostly because of my mantras of reliability, versatility, and availability of ammo. It has barrels available for defense, hunting fowl, rifled for slugs, and even muzzle loading.

a good .22 rifle, it is good for all kinds of things including a cheap way to practice your marksmanship skills for when you decide to purchase a larger caliber rifle

Good call Wardog. Have you any models in mind? One of the reasons I chose what I did is the price. A new Mossy runs around $400-800 MSRP.

A good air rifle might also be a good idea along those lines you mentioned (I think there is an article somewhere on that).

The 10/22 is coming up high on my list for my next procurement. Either that or get a dedicated 22LR upper for the AR-15.

H&R (Harrington & Richardson) has some items that are worth looking into (thank you Capt Bart). They have a .357 magnum/20 gauge single shot combo that I think retails for under $350. http://www.hr1871.com/default.asp

The break-action design has very few moving parts and the combination of a popular handgun round with the second most popular shotgun round is appealing to me. There is also a .44 magnum/12 gauge combo.

Thoughts?

Just 1 gun?

Id have to say 12ga

Given the variety of shot and slugs, you can hunt most anything from a Squirrel to Elk Deer.

12ga is also very effect for home defense. Can mount a scope of you want.

Pump or Semi

$150-$2000

Your choice

From a fixed location, hard to argue with the 12 gauge for starters, and definitely a good 22 next for all the reasons listed. Next would be a good scoped semi-auto or pump centerfire rifle followed by a 357 revolver.

For a BOB gun:

I don't own one of these, so I may change my mind after handling it but for a single gun to do everything I'd like to check out a Rossi Circuit Judge. My reasoning is that it the reviews I've read on reliability and accuracy with the 45 Colt loads are very good which surprised me a little with the jump they have before hitting the barrel. This would give me a single lightweight easy handling carbine capable of deer/defense to 100yds or small game to 25yds with the 410 shot loads. Yes a 12 gauge can do everything this can better, but I can pack alot more ammo for the same weight with the 45/410. According to my postage scale a high brass #4 3" 410 shell weighs a bit under half of what a 2 3/4" 12 gauge #4 does. 45 Colt ammo also isn't extremely heavy. There are definite downsides to this, but there will be to any single gun answer. If I went this route the second gun would definitely be a 45 Colt revolver and I'd get it ASAP. There may come a time the rifle needs to have the stock removed for concealment in the pack, leaving a shooter to rely on the pistol. Also the pistol would provide supplemental firepower to the rifle's 5 shot cylinder.

Dr. Pepper Well I love the 10/22

but where you live in the pacific northwest a Remington 870 express pump 12 gauge fires 23/4 an 3inch shells hurry while they are still cheap.

animals in your area are large trees are tall or dense with foliage so for more ability to take small game and Canadian birds on the wing

In fact I would go with the dual barrel rifled slug barrel with rifle sights and the vent rib with rem choke you can get other chokes here is the site

http://www.remington.com/en/products/firearms/shotguns/model-870/model-870-express-combos.aspx

then a Ruger 10/22

Then you will love the H&Rs I own a survivor with the .308 bullbarrel., A .454 Cassull barrel, a 12 Ga barrel and a custom 22win mag/22LR barrel. With storage in the stock and fore grip and zero tools needed for take down

Initial cost with just the .308 bull barrel $245 each additional barrel was $65.00 weapon is wicked accurate

and tough as nails it is my primary hunting and trapping weapon.

Now if your more worried about zombies 10/22 and your in a heavily populated area this is the first on I would get

It is a hard plan if a person is limited in funds a rossi matched pair 223 and 12 gauge with adapters to shoot 20ga and 410ga and more

other adapters for rifle and shotgun that you can scrounge and trade for

and a pistol like a Smith & Wesson 22A for suppression fire and small game

The best answer to this question depends on your view as to what is the most important job of this fire arm. I would say for basic all around survival and food procurement that you want a .22 caliber rifle. However if home defense is your first concern, certainly a 12 gauge shotgun.

Ill repeat what others have said.

12 ga pump. Extremely versatile. Can hunt a variaty of game wih it. Provides an excellent home security option. Much better than a 22. Shotguns can be fitted with optics and whatever tactical swag you fancy. There is a variaty of "non-lethal" ammo. And IMO a 12ga pump is easier to clean than a 22. At least my 500's are. My 22's are a boarderline pain in the butt to clean. I hate dealing with those tiny 22 barrels.

How long would it be til you buy your 2nd gun in your collection? Make you 2nd gun a 22 rifle.

honestly a good ruger 10-22 is probably the best option available, semi-auto, reliable, cheap, accurate but since im responding on pg 3 and did not read the other replies it is probably a dead horse thing ;)

If you've never owned a gun and are inexperienced I might go with one of the H&R or even Rossi combo gun. in 20ga/22lr These things are CHEAP and even if you eventually move past them they are well worth having in reserve.

If I could only have on gun it would be the 10-22 because of the incredible versatility of the 22lr round AND how inexpensive a large ammo supply is. With a 22 you can...kill ANYTHING on the North American continent. Now that said I wouldn't make it my first choice but even a moose won't live long with a couple of holes in its lungs. If I want birds I've have NO problem being unsporting and shooting them sitting. In a survival situation I wouldn't waste a shotgun round wing shooting. I'd try to get several birds on the ground close together and do them in mass.

A 22 is plenty to dissuade a two legged attacker when you have an automatic. Once people realize that ANY wound can easily become a fatal wound people that survive will become a lot more peaceful. Even if you are the baddest sucker on the planet, by the time you watch a comrad die slow over a week long period from a gut shot wound you WILL be a lot less likely to laugh at a 22.

In a lot of cases the 12 ga pump might be better BUT the ammo is HEAVY, expensive and loud. The question was only ONE and I think a 22lr will cover more territory than a 12ga. Up close I think a 10-22 is almost as devastating as a load of buckshot because I'll hit you 5 or 6 times in a flash. Back off 75 yards and if I have a 10-22 and you have a 12ga pump you are in DEEP Kaka!

All that said, will also throw in another possible weapon. I have an old AR-7 and it goes everywhere with me. I even have a couple of 25 rnd mags for it.

Thompson Contender. Single Shot and any caliber.

It comes as a .50 cal muzzle loader but you can order a barrel for any caliber. The only draw back is you probably need a scope for each barrel and that is a little more cost but a whole lot cheaper then buying a bunch of guns.

You can a 12 guage into the swamp for ducks and have a .308 barrel in your back pack to deer hunt on the way out and not violate the more than one gun rule most states have.

You can also have a primary use - 300 mag for hunting but then buy a 223 barrel for practice and its the same trigger pull, stock, etc.... Pretty cool system.
