Would you let your children ‘give up’ this easily?

Recommended Posts

Okay gang, if I may step up on my soapbox and speak to my friends like the old fart I am. I might write some stuff you won’t like but don’t take anything personal even if my words fir you perfectly.

You are giving Spam and some site errors too much power over your life! We all know what Spam looks like. Rather than take the easy road and ignore it, some folks are getting upset and are leaving the site over spam. I ask, WTF?

And let me cover the link problems. The “New Posts’ function is not working. The ‘search’ feature is not working. Yes, this makes navigating a little challenging but not impossible. It’s a little irritating.

Folks, you’re giving the Spammers and the broken functions F-A-R too much power over your life. Spam doesn’t impact me because I avoid it and searching the ‘old fashioned way’ is not overly challenging. I mean, come on folks.

So here is the part where I may lose friends…

If these few inconveniences are this troubling to you, how are you going to survive a SHTF scenario? Seriously… how? What are you going to do when there’s no electricity? Or when some comes to take your food from you? This is kid’s stuff, my friends and you are empowering it and giving it the power to defeat you! I don’t know how else to say it. If these issues upset you this much, what are you going to do when things become serious? Or when I guy dies next to you? Or when you can’t stop a friend’s bleeding? Will you give up or dig in?

I am asking you to count to ten and think about what you’re doing and how much power you are surrendering to these minor issues.

And lastly – and most importantly - if you saw your children giving up over such trivial issues, what would you tell them?

Very well put sir. I don't feel like i am giving up though. I have given it my all. Emailed texts and talked to owners. Was told i would be a moderator which would help me tho solve the issue if keeping things deleted. I have not been gotten back to for months and there has been no mention on the site from the owners. I am discouraged discouraged that such a great community us going the way it's going with no word from the Mayor.

THe spam is an indicator of security issues and vulnerablilies on the server. THis forum is likely 90% compromised. Not 100% because its still up and I haven't gotten a virus from it YET. Im not 'giving up' on anything. THey've had plenty of time to resolve the issue. And I don't feel like reimaging my PC because of it, potentially suffereing a loss of data or identity thieft

I was just going to start a thread on this VERY subject. You all make good points, but the bottom line is: Yes we can 'tough' it out, but why take a chance with our pcs when we can JUST START OVER some where else? I don't want to quit and probably won't, sure I won't, but I should. The truth IMO, is that the powers that be have turned their backs on this forum....maybe it is due to all the complaining about the SC store that was going on here not long ago.

I know IF this was my livelihood, and I put a forum together to draw in new business, I sure wouldn't be too happy about being slammed by people using my forum, on my website, whether it was deserved or not.

Anyway, no more ranting and raving, I'm still here, but I can't blame others for leaving.

Coastie, what if I just have a "mistress"? LOL.

I hit a few forums, but this is my main site and I have many friends here. I have learned so much and the comaraderie really helps when thinking and planning on such a serious issue. I never used the new posts feature and the search feature very seldom, so that doesn't effect me much. The spam is just irksome, but ignorable and even if I was in the market for the product they were selling, I would find somewhere else to buy it.

My issue is with the neglect, will we try and log on and find the site shut down? I sure hope not because I don't have email or other ways to contact everyone.

I always find a thread(s) I think are current and post on them. This keeps them at the top and the spam goes down without adding more threads to sort thru. Even if you just post "bumping spam", it doesn't add to the extra threads.

I do that as often as I can, but I run out of knowledge:(

All the aforementioned is true. And I agree.

HOWEVER-

I think the greater irritation is that we do not here anything from Survival Cache on the issue(s). I appreciate Capt Bart weighing in from time to time, but he is a moderator, and not controlling the site. This lack of communication is what creates the stress. ( in my opinion - which makes me "me" and does not necessarily make me "right"!)

But leave because of it? NOPE!

Speaking of people leaving did the spammers get snake. I was gone for a while and I haven't seen him around in all the back log post I read.

Snake left prior to these issues I believe...for his own reasons which I never did figure out. It is different without him, isn't it?

Well gang, I spoke with a friend here and he explained the purpose of ‘leaving’ and told me the things I missed.

First, he is not leaving forever. He is going to ‘give it a break’ for a while in hopes that the site runs normally.

Second, ‘leaving’ is his way of making a protest. He believes that the site is not properly maintained. He will be ‘gone’ until the site is running as it used to run.

Third, Spam… although he understands that spam is tough to control, he has been on the site and the newest six threads were all spam. That’s kind of rubbing him the wrong way.

Also, thankfully, he took my post as it was meant and was not insulted by my words. For a while I was going to keep my questions private but then I posted them as a way to understand those leaving.

So, I now understand what I was missing. Although I don’t agree with the boycott, at least I now understand it. And for that, I thank you, amigo!

I wrote the above post before reading your feedback. So, this is an updated commentary.

I never thought of this as a security issue and am not computer savvy enough to make that determination. But I can’t see how to cut out the spam unless, like on other sites, the sender has to reply to an e-mail before being granted posting authority. To be honest, I can’t recall if we did that here or not.

Tinder, no need to apologize. That is how you felt so express it. No worries. I didn’t want to see you leave this site for good.

I better understand the issues now. I appreciate the effort you guys put in to helping me understand the global issues. Thanks for helping the sunrise over Marblehead!

Make a captcha for posting new threads, if they are bots, problem solved.

If they are people, make the mods able to delete threads.

I've moderated on vBulletin before, and I had the power to delete threads, and ban people.

Not bad suggestions. I can delete threads and ban folks but I don't spend all my time on the threads; I'm not retired yet and still have to earn a living. Today was an especially difficult day for spam and I was rather busy. My apologies for those of you inconvenienced.

Cap'n, due to the condition of my legs, I am retired (pretty much). If you trust me to delete just those threads, I wouldn’t mind deleting them when I see them. I check in about twice per day and would do that as a ‘thank you’ to the site’s owners and moderators. Plus in Tinder ever gets my goat…:o
