Rod 10 Report post Posted October 29, 2012 Well, it is 11 am and, being the dedicated business owner that I am , I am at the office. Wind is around 40 to 50 mph with 1/2 mile visibility. Rain is moderate but it is increasing. One of my guys lives over in Jersey and he just called in to say he wasn't going to make it. While we were on the phone he lost his power. I am thinking we are going to close the office around noon and send everyone home. I just knew it was a good idea to have my house and business on top of good size hills. oregonchick 10 Report post Posted October 29, 2012 I'm in Oregon, so... no storm. But my friend in Baltimore says they still have power, but rain is falling at about a 65-degree angle and his wife is baking like crazy so that they have plenty of fresh goodies, since they assume they will lose power at some point. I've seen pics of huge storm swells - like flooding in Battery Park in Manhattan. Looks like DC is getting hammered with rain, too. There have been several pictures released of the men who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and that looks like a real misery in this weather. What remarkable dedication. oregonchick 10 Report post Posted October 29, 2012 Some STAND TALL... That's the third image I've seen of that. Inspiring to see them responding with the honor and dignity they always do, even in the face of such a terrible storm.

awake 10 Report post Posted October 30, 2012 The Old Guard the Last vestige of the old Army God Bless them if I was there I would be in the amphitheater with them just to show my respect. I do not meet the physical requirements to be a member. I can think of no greater honor. My grandfather is buried 100 yards from the Tomb. I was a young teen at the time and those images of the Guard are as vivid as the the day i first saw them. There are some things that you can never put to words. The feelings of that day come back when i see the guard. If not for any other reason i am proud of those young men and their strong sense of duty. God bless them. Sir_Vive 10 Report post Posted October 30, 2012 (edited) For very current updates on Sandy, + all other earthly events http://www.theweatherspace.com/tws.html "ELECTRICITY SHUT OFF IN MANHATTAN SUBWAY GRID LOCATION ... AND SEA LEVEL RISE MAPS ... BATTERY PARK HAS a 12 FOOT SURGE NOW ... High Tide is coming ... Electrical Company CON ED will start shutting of the electricity for anyone on the same grid as the Subways. Water is spilling over too fast. " https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=483473295017362&set=a.314437941920899.79964.132522300112465&type=1&theater ^^Predicted sea levels on the west coast. A quote I'm reading from facebook, " Portions of Manhattan Fire/Rescue/EMS cannot be contacted over the radio due to a number of radio towers going "off line." They announced the units that would not be able to be reached and announced the towers that were being taken off line for preservation. Numerous firehouses have been evacuated with the fire/rescue crew disconnecting gas and electricity to the firehouses prior to evacuation. This was announced over their radios at about 7:45 PM EST." This station has lots of activity, running off of backup generators in Manhattan, if you're interested - http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/9358/web (I've been listening for quite sometime now) And then I see things like this, " Wow! Most powerful Cat 1 in history. I live right here in the thick of it. Just rain and wind. Fucking grow a pair and stop being little bitches every time the media wants to fear monger. I know Obama needs a story to distract from his war crimes, arming of terrorist and bombings of babies. But this is a too much." Either way, I'm going to keep and eye on it. Also, the stock market is DOWN. Anyone with clearance can go in and make changes, with no witnesses, and no one would know until it reopened, am I wrong here? Seems fishy Edited October 30, 2012 by Sir_Vive

Dr K30 11 Report post Posted October 30, 2012 Been watching Channel 4 out of New York on their webcast for the last few hours. It looks like it was pretty bad. Again out thoughts and prayers go out t those who are in this storms path. One little note on flooded cars and trucks. If water got over the dash and you have insurance to cover it they will most likely just total it. If Salt water got over the dash and you didn't have insurance, your screwed. (no nice way to put it, just send it across the scales and start over) However, if you got fresh water over the dash or just the engine submerged, and you want to salvage it yourself you have about 48 to 72 hours to get the water out of the engine, transmission and axles. Pull the spark plugs (or glow plugs if it's diesel) and change all the fluids and THEN spin it over to get any water out of the cylinders. Now once it's all flushed and back together it may or may not start, but at least the drive line should be safe until you can sort out the rest of the problems. You will probably have damage to electrical parts as well but those can be dealt with over time. And unless it's something older and hard to replace like my old K30 you probably need to focus on other things and forget about it. But i wanted to throw this info out just in case someone might need it.
