Marines and LEO prepare for Zombie invasion

Recommended Posts

I can't believe I missed this when you originally posted it!

Seems like there are a few ways to look at this. The paranoid person in me wonders, "Are they prepping for a zombie apocalypse because they have reason to believe that one could actually occur?" But the part of me that is not a whackjob (as described in the article) thinks that this is actually kind of a cool way to break up training. There's no reason a training exercise can't involve some humor or imagination, as long as it's ultimately taken seriously. And moving outside of "the usual" in terms of scenarios, combatants, etc. can actually be extremely beneficial because it encourages mental engagement, forces participants to think about new obstacles and new solutions, and gives an opportunity to do something that isn't just rote, by-the-numbers repetition of what everyone has done before.

What would be different in a zombie scenario versus another kind of scenario?

  • Normal modes of subduing combatants wouldn't necessarily work (only head shots work, whereas normally targeting center mass would be better; non-lethal methods would have zero impact).
  • Extremely high rate of injury to team members, with likely injury caused TO team members BY team members.
  • A high risk of exposure/infection (not unlike biological or chemical warfare).
  • Need to provide treatment, extraction, and protection for medical teams and injured/sick.
  • Huge groups of combatants/hostiles with few ways to repel them and no way to stop them without killing them.

It's a nightmare scenario for a reason, but you can see how this might be similar to other situations that have been faced in the past (like the Battle of Mogadishu, the one that was featured in Black Hawk Down) and how pieces could apply to future situations.

And hey, if the zombie apocalypse DOES happen, wouldn't you prefer that the military have some prior training experience with undead hordes?

LOL... I see the point, it just really caught me off guard. I guess I spent so much time playing the "enemy" in training, I just don't know how I would have responded to an order to play the undead...

The cynic in me sees it as a push to desensitize the public to military as police on US soil. I'm still unsure how this was/is being treated by the officials and their complete agenda. I know it's a feasible scenario, in so much as they have deemed certain bio weapons can create a "zombie-like" scourge, so in that, I am worried about the actual reason behind it.

I have no doubt that the participants enjoyed the change of pace of these training exercises tho.

I agree with oregonchick...why would the military spend money on training our Marines for scenarios involving zombies unless it was a real concern? I served in the Corps not that long ago and I never conducted ANY training that didn't serve a real world purpose. And, the last time I checked, the government was looking for ways to cut spending by reducing the size of our military and cutting their pay. Yet, it has the spare cash to throw away for "training" for zombie scenarios...something isn't adding up. If this wasn't a concern of the military, why hasn't a military spokesperson come out publicly and made it clear that zombies aren't a real world concern for the military and the reason for this "training?" Any thoughts??

I honestly have no comment on this. I guess I will have to digest more info.

Its just more training for Martial Law to brain washing and de-sensitise them to kill US Citizens. THe just call it 'Zombies' to be trendy and 'funny' to the public will blow it off.

Just replace Zombie with whatever group you care to. Remember the best way to get your guys to do something they would not normally do is to demonize the opponent....be it some guy with a rag wrapped around his head or a gun owner protesting over his or her right of self protection.
