Convoy/Escort?

Recommended Posts

I have a large group that I train/Prep with. Six famalies spread out over two neighboring counties. Our retreat is located in a rural area with access to numerous back roads. We all plan on relocating to one central location in the event of an emergency.

I feel that having designated members of the group act in an escort capacity would be safest. Ideally we collect the members of our group furthest away first and make one mass movement to the retreat collecting other families as we get closer.

How do you plan on getting your group to your retreat? Do you plan on traveling in a large group or is it every man for them self? Do you feel a convoy scenario is safest? I can see some merrit in traveling alone. You would draw less attention and could probably travel faster.

Thank you for your input.

bigEasy,

OK, here's my 2 cents worth:

I was trained in convoy escort in the MP's.

Most powerful vehicle in front, ideally equipped with a pushbar. Jam thru any obstacles!!! If that vehicle is stopped, so is the entire convoy.

Second strongest vehicle brings up the rear.

A means to communicate to every vehicle.

A convoy ALWAYS ends up spreading out unless extremely tight control is being kept on speed and distance!

Remember, strengths in numbers.

Maybe, in addition, if you have one or two people on small rice-burners to scout ahead?!

I guess it would depend on what you're prepping for. If something like a bad hurricane were approaching then just get in your car and drive like you normally would. Should the area be under some type of assault from roving mobs then your approach would differ.

Well just smack me upsidedahead too!

Good stuff there femvet! A walkie talkie in/on every mobile.

I doubt I'd have thought about any of that and haven't till now! ;)

Femvet is right, if that first vehicle gets taken out by anything what so ever, your whole convoy is shut down until you can either repair, move, or get around it. I prefer a 2 car method, in your case, 3 groups, 2 cars in each. Thats what my family is going to do, although we are more spread out so it would work better.

Sounds like a good plan with coms and all, but just to play devil's advocate (it's raining and I'm bored)

What happens after an EMP event? No coms and possibly no vehicles. Unless your vehicles are old school, without computers and all, they're gonna be kaput.

Another idea for scout type vehicles.. Motorcycles. Fast, maneuverable, and economic on gas.

Femvet is correct on a powerful vehicle in front and also do not forget a recovery vehicle. You will want a vehicle equipped with a tow bar/strap to recover any break downs. It will need to be big enough to pull the heaviest vehicle in your party.

We attached tow straps to all our vehicle"s front brush guards/bumpers in Iraq so the vehicle in front could hook up quickly if we had 1 go down in a hot zone; seconds can mean life or death.

As stated earlier, depending on the situation that causes a bug out/relocation, having preset codes for roads will be essential. If "Highway A1A" is "red", everyone in the group knows they must find an alternate route. I would designate each route with a nickname for OPSEC; just make sure the names are easily understood and "common" enough NOT to raise questions if overheard.

Also having a van or pickup with a topper designated as a medical transport (carries no gear except immediate need first aid supplies and a trained medic would be a nice addition if possible. Regardless of situation, vehicle accidents will be common with everyone trying to vacate the area.

There are several military Field Manuals on convoy operations and they make a decent reference but will need modified to you specific group. Learn to "herringbone" at halts/long stops and have personnel that will pull security away from the vehicle at these locations. Vehicle types will cause minor or major modifications to what you learn from the Field Manuals (I doubt many will have an uparmored HMMV, ASV, or Bradley).

I would suggest that if you are going to have scouts then instead of a go fast motorcycle a street legal dirt bike since it can handel difficult terrain better and it has a light and signals. As for a lead vehicle a wrecker or a duce and a half if you can acquire or "procure" one would be nice. Granted its big and loud but at 40 to 55 MPH not much is gonna stay in its way....;) Kudos on the van idea but if we are in a TEOTWAWKI situation im gunning for a ambulance or a armored bank truck as a second vehicle a convoy. If you can set it up to where all the vehicles run the same fuel that will go a long way on saving resources. But this is just my humble opinion.

Stay safe

I'm with ya Femvet! What things are called just depends on where ya live or what ya know I guess.

For example : Down here, grits are breakfast and eaten with salt (maybe cheese in 'em). My friend in Ohio puts sugar on 'em! Blech! We (on the forums) refer to assault weapons as full auto rifles carried by military. On CNN they refer to a Glock as an assault weapon. And all rifles are Ak's or AR's. LOL

PS- grits are also used to kill ants. Pour some dry grits on an ant hill, two days later the ants are dead!

They eat the grits, which expand and the ants explode.

Guess that would make ants think of grits as assault weapons?
