Followed and picture taken incessantly on walk

Recommended Posts

So my mom was on her routine night walk in downtown saratoga. Downtown Saratoga is a very SMALL downtown and its just one little street. Lots of people in restaurants ect. My mom told me there was a dark car sitting at the parking lot and started following her and TAKING pictures non stop with flash! I am assuming DSLR since the rate it took pictures was pretty fast according to her description. At first my mom thought the person was taking pictures of the building since tourists apparently come to Saratoga for sight seeing. Then the car started to really follow her and take more concentrated pictures of her. The car then sped away only to make a U turn to come back and take more pictures. The car was cruising RIGHT NEXT TO HER and taking pictures. My mom thought she was gonna get napped so she further into the sidewalk and screamed at the car to STOP. The car then sped away and she ran home but the car was around the corner ish. She didn't get to see the licence plate number or anything. Can we file a police report on this? Or is it just a waste of time? I just found out today so I basically flipped out and told her she shouldn't go out at night anymore and I wanted a chain lock installed on the front door. I guess I will have to talk to the landlord about that. ANYWAYS. Has this happened to anyone? My mom felt like the car was just waiting for her to walk by it. God this is frickin insanely annoying for me and frightening for my mum.

Of course you should call the cops

My intention here is not to be rude in any way... but to propose a different possiblity...

Not knowing anything about you or your physical appearance

Maybe these people were taking photos for a website ?

Buy her a flare gun and take her somewhere safe to show her how to use it. Then Work through the situation...she should put her back against the building and when the person(s) get out of the car ... scream fire ... and then light them up.

And Yes forget the night chain...not worth the effort. You want a deadbolt that has a two inch throw and re-enforce the door jam as well.

Hope this is just a prank ... but the way you decribe the incident it does sound more serious.

Yes... by all means talk to the police and you may want to ask around to see if others have been harrassed in the same manner.

Not to minimize your mom's fears in any manner, but this sounds like a couple of kids having their version of fun. A person with criminal intent is hardly going to use a flash camera at night in that manner.

No, I think it is some wise acre kids playing "lets scare people". What would really work for your mom is one of those high intensity flashlights. That will put a hurt on some idiots eyes!

Im in for the Mace, something that stops a bear....point and shoot,no questions just shoot!!If they are just kids and trying to scare your Mom,than burn thier butts with a good can of spray..use the whole can.

Direct fire into the car and everyone in it.

A direct threat must be delt with "ON THE SPOT"..Its a challenge and unanswered will continue.

Remember the word BULLY..

Yes calls the local Leo,and file reports with every agency you can.Call the mayors office, call the visitors center,Make sure that theyKNOW this will cost the city MONEY!!

the key word is frightened

even if your scared do not act like it, carry a firearm mace is not a deterrent there have been numerous

incidents with mental and drugged persons where it did not work and weather has a lot to do with its performance if it is raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock or high wind {weather changes even out for a walk}

carry a cell phone USE IT immediately anything out of the norm directed toward you should alert you

something is wrong.

Barbie.dragon

routine that is where it all fell apart, a person is not assaulted every day it is usually

once in a lifetime so planning from a routine leads you to fail when TSHTF.

everything I read set off alarm bells that she was not mentally prepared this should be a wake up call

for all of you I don't go outside without a ROD not because it's a bad area in fact it is quite the opposite.

The problem when does a neighborhood go from being good to bad does it go back to being good?

I watch the news as most do, but I am more critical they always say "it's never happened here before"

or "where are the police this sh*t is always happening around here".

in either case people are expecting others to protect them or that they are special and it will never happen to them neither is true your are responsible for yourself every day all day.

and crime has one constant that most times it is someone you know that has targeted you or it is random

and you were a target of opportunity.

Comes to the same conclusion each person is responsible for their own defense.

We live in very unsteady times and everyone needs a cell phone and a ROD and even a pair of binoculars

Rabid animals, dope heads, rapists, thieves and family violence that spills into the street as it has happened here one family member shots another when leaving the scene sees a potential witness and shoots them.

I do not know how old your mother is but going to kung fu classes or listening to a cop telling you how to survive a savage attack {usually they tell you give them what they want} depends on the political correctness of your area and or its demographics.

If your startled or in fear, scared then you were not mentally prepared to handle the situation alone.

because you are alone the time between calling for help and getting it can be a lifetime YOURS and it could end right there.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse! Most women, especially if they're over a "certain" age were taught to be "nice" and be a lady and are therefore just unprepared for violent confrontation. More than anything else, it requires a change in mindset!

Was this just kids being stupid? Maybe. The point is that she was frightened and had no idea what to do.

With a cellphone she could have:

1. IMMEDIATELY called 911

2. taken a picture of them, the car and the plate #.

Mace is good IF you know how to properly deploy it. If the wind is blowing in your direction, you end up gassing yourself. But then worse things can happen. I've been gassed plenty, it's not such a big deal. You tear up, caugh, nose runs. But if it means I gas the bad guys as well, so be it.

Barbie, there is NO such thing as a safe area!!!!!!!!!!! All it takes is ONE violent person to change the character of an area quickly.

Now, if your mom decides to give up her walks which she apparently enjoys, she really has become a victim.

Keep going out, but keep your eyes and ears open at all times, and if something should happen again, go into the next restaurant and CALL THE COPS!!!

As a California native, I'm familiar with Saratoga and where it is located. It IS a small town in an affluent area. Just a guess, but I feel strongly it was some bored teens, trying to scare/annoy an "old lady" that they were sure wpuldn,t do anything at all, but be terrified. In that county, "Mom" is NOT going to be able to get a CCW permit, but OC/pepper or macenbrand spray is still illegal. If she draws it, she should use it and not merely threaten. Mom needs a cell and possibly a younger buddy to walk with her to discourage these nitwits from their tactics. When I was on patrol as a supervisor ( years ago now) had a car full of teen males pull a toy Beretta pistol on an off duty officer and his wife from another agency in a road rage incident. We took the little weasels (and Daddy's Mercedes) to jail (and car jail) for brandishing a firearm. Daddy was an attorney and tried to bluster so much, in defense of weasel #1 I arrested him in the station for interfering with an officer. Mny times "kids" are as STUPID as I was when I was a kid, and never "think that their actions in these times, have serious real life consequences.

Given the population demographic of Saratoga, CA, I'd bet any amount of money that these little twerps had a flash unit(only) and were "strobing" Mom instead of shooting actual photos. Just my WAG is all.

Your mom isnt a moive star is she? if not than this is very worrysome.

Nope not a movie star. Just a single mom that works as a preschool teacher.

She just looks like a normal asian woman. Nothing special :< 10pm is a rather strange time to go out for photos in a small town like Saratoga though :<

Yeah the scary part was the car just kept following her. When it got to the end of the street it made a u turn and just kept following and at one point they just top pictures and just kept driving next to her. She yelled at them to stop but they refused and there was no noise from the car. Just silent.

She decided not to go out at night anymore. I recommended her to go out earlier like at 7:00 pm instead of 9 or 10pm. She tried to take a photo but when the car got ahead of her it drove off really fast so she couldnt take the picture and it was too dark. To be quite honest she doesn't look that old apparently. A lot of people tell me my mom looks too young to have me (I'm 19) and they think she's in her mid 30's. My mom decided it would be best to just come home because it was less than .1 miles from the house. I can basically see downtown from my condo if I stepped out. My mom's English isn't perfect so in a panicked situation I don't think she could have said anything coherent since I can't say coherent things either and English is my primary language! She's around her late 40's so I don't think she's too old but I've told my mom I am very against her going out for walks so late long before...

And I think Saratoga is probably the safest place to live out of all the other areas around here. At least the part of Saratoga I live in basically has no serious crime. Most of the people living here are Asian and White, avg income $140,000 and avg housing value almost $1 million. (Of course I don't count as a part of that because were just renting a small condo and just getting by...) And we're pretty secluded from the other parts of Saratoga. 1 Murder the past 50 years or 100 I don't remember and stuff like that. I was so surprised this happened because there were people sitting in restaurants (they have outdoor areas too) so I'm confidant that nothing terrible would have happened but who knows.

I really hate the kids living in this area. We're just renting a condo here because I feel like this is the safest place for my mom to live. If it were one of the stupid little brats that lived here my mom would have definitely heard laughing? I don't know. The creepy part was them coming back I think 3 times to harass my mom. My mom said it was just really silent when this basically happened and the camera was clicking away.

Oh my mace is illegal in Saratoga? Derp thank God you told me that.

Again I hate the annoying kids here. Going to high school in Saratoga sucked since they were so privileged and I wasn't. Oh well that's life.

B.D., I would never advocate anything "illegal" but "nobody rapes a 38" or "arrive alive with a 45" comes to mind.... along with, "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6". The legality of subversive gov'ts and their willingness to leave their populace at the mercy of predators is reprehensible and the Constitution overrides any local laws, 2d Amendment included regardless of what the socialists want. In commienoise, it's illegal to even own a firearm without a permit , let alone carry; all I will say is that I am prepared to defend my family and myself at all times. I know my risks and accept them, but it is a personal decision.

punks never learn like the kids that harrased the bus monitor untl they get their azz in a crack.

I would make a report and confront the parents at their work they will confront the kids because at the least

they do not want to be embarrassed in public.

thisw may cause some problem but that is life unless you want her doing her walk grabbing her ankles

and I see that could be uncomfortable.

Squeeky wheel gets the grease make a pain out of yourself at the local police station carry a small pair of binoculars to get the license number call the cops imediatly and make a report.

post the problem online on a local site ask others to come forward.

as I doubt this is an isolated incident call the FBI you do not know why they are doing this LOL

call the state police get everyone involved call the principle

Weren't they trying to run over a cat swerving at them ??? lol that will get some action they may not give a sh*t

about a human but if they are trying to kill little critters OH sh*T learn to play dirty or your not going to win against a creep.

Normally, women have a zero attention span when it comes to situational awareness. They are never taught to think that way. So, just that your mom saw the car immediately is amazing.

Remember, when seconds count, the police are minutes away! Every individual, including your mom, should be prepared to defend themselves until the police finally reach the scene. Mace, at a minimum, is needed. I much prefer that women take the appropriate courses and training and take the steps necessary to have a permit to carry a concealed firearm. And they should practice shooting and getting the gun to the ready position. This way, when bad guys come knocking, she can get her gun into the firing position from memory, without thinking.

Report it. Ask mom to look for the car during the day so she can get the plate number. I would not tell her to take a picture of the plate but instead, to memorize it. If there are bad guys in the car and they see her take a picture, there is a high probability that they will get out of the car to ‘take’ the camera phone out of your mom’s hand. Were I a bad guy, I certainly would.

A Chain lock is worthless. The 1/4 inch screws will do nothing to keep you safe. Use a peep hole or a outdoor camera. Get your mom mace(Saber Red not the made in china crap) to carry and make sure she knows if she has to pull it out she should use it IMMEDIATELY not threaten with it. You were in CA if I remember right so the rules are stacked against us a lot of the time. This might be as good a time as any to retalk to your mom about visiting the local shooting range but if you do keep the focus on concern over her and your safety. Stun guns are legal out here as long as there's no local ordinances but an encounter where you have to employ one would be very physical. Whatever she ends up with her purse or pockets need to be decluttered so it is always accessible.

The lock that will buy you the most time is a "kick bolt" they mount on the bottom of the door and you step on them and a bolt goes down into the floor, most are spring loaded so you bump a latch and they release. With a deadbolt in a good door they will turn ,as we say, a one kick door into a three or better.

I'm with Matt on this one! Make everyone in the entire community, LEOs, News outlets, churches, Motorcycle Clubs, PTAs, City government, scout troops and even the local garden club aware of the SOBs, their description as best you can, the exact way the jerks set up and conduct their uninvited photo op. As it is with most evil things in this world, once the lights are on, the boogy man runs for the shadows. From the story, you should help you mom understand "situational awareness. As for personal protection, that seems to be a matter of choice. IMHO, I say aim small, miss small, with a large bore!

IF this was just a bunch of dumb kids doing dumb kid things (I was there once myself - we usually toliette papered houses but ...) the police report does no harm. IF it was more serious you have added a data point to the crime statistics that could indicate expanding gang activity, drug activity, new wave of smash and grab, home invasion or what ever. The report goes into the file (assuming the LEOs are competent) and a profile (I know it is a dirty word but it is effective) begins to develop. Probably nothing and she was never in serious danger BUT this kind of stupid stuff can get people hurt.

The idea of 'SWATing' as a prank ignores the real risk to the victims of the prank or to the officers if the homeowner response includes deadly force; this seems to be in a similar vein. I urge you to file the report; it won't hurt and may be a missing key that gives the LEOs an edge in an investigation.

Just my not so humble opinion.
