Crossbow

Recommended Posts

RTG - I've had an increasing interest in the Crossbow for the reasons you state. Can you give me/us more info? Specifically, to include such things as qualities to look for, best brands, etc. What is their effective range? What about "ammo", i.e., bolts and such. If you have the time I'd appreciate any info you can share.

Thanks in advance.

You should pick up an issue of Outdoor Life magazine August 2012 edition....has good article on bows and crossbows.....also Field and Stream issue for August has 25 rules for bow hunting that should have some good tips that would work for the crossbow as well.

I prefer compound bow. It takes much more skill to take an animal at 15 yards and it really helps fine tune scent and concealment discipline. Not that I won't drop a nasty hog with a slug!

I grew up in CA, and for the longest time I was under the impression that crossbows were illegal there. As it turns out crossbows are legal in Cali, and it is legal to hunt with them..... however, what I found out is that due to the fact the crossbow has a trigger you can not use them during bow season, you must use them during rifle season. I own a crossbow myself its one of them cheap ones you see on the internet for $150 but it works well, had it for years. Its 150lbs draw and it worked to bring down a deer.

just make sure to check your local laws crossbows are illegal to use to hunt with in some states and is an expensive invetment if your going to buy for that.

Indeed, the laws vary wildly. There is a breakdown here.
