Best Places to Survive

Oregonchick: Just wondering if you have ever read Dies the Fire, by S.M. Sterling. It was the first book that I ever read that got me thinking about preparing for some type of disaster or TEOTWAWKI. Your part of the country (the Willamet VAlley) is the setting for the books. I think the original trilogy is pretty darn entertaining, and actually has some fairly sound thought behind a lot of the ideas (assuming the original premise could happen).

Sorry for hi-jacking, now back to your regularly scheduled thread!

Way late, but that is a really interesting book. Like most books about an apocalypse situation it has plenty of fiction, but also deals with some of the hard decisions that need made and most importantly makes a reader think for themself. I made the mistake of reading the second trilogy first, but am liking the first trilogy much better, I'm just starting the second book.

I absolutely love this series (especially the first part of it - it goes a little "new adventures of old King Arthur" after the first few books). It's such fun to read a survivalist novel set in my part of the country, and provided some food for thought about different areas of the state in terms of a good BOL. Plus I just love the characters. So glad Schoeny recommended them, and so glad you're enjoying these, too!

Sure have enjoyed reading this thread. You guys are an interesting lot.

I really havent figured out where I would go... I own a house an hour west of Vancouver BC. I have forest in my back yard and own down the ravine. I thought I would end up back in the forest but there isnt enough of it.

After reading all of your thoughts and getting a little more insightful I realize I need to truly give this thought and planning.

SIgh.... dammit. I like it here but probably not enough wild life to sustain myself and all the rest of the folks that would be scrambling here.
