Best Places to Survive

Recommended Posts

My pleasure, hope you enjoy it. Its about a TEOTWAWKI situation thats pretty far fetched (imo), where basically everything invented past the 1800's quits working. Meaning no electricity, no gun powder, no internal combustion etc. The charachters in the story never figure out if it was an act of god, some aliens so far advanced that they could put some kind of damper on the world, or what.

The series follows several groups of survivors in the Willamet over something like 10 years or so. Quite entertaining as long as you arent put off by medival type action.

We live in south-central Texas now, country I'm not really comfortable in/with. My home is in the mountains of western NC and that's where I'd prefer to be. I can't see that happening, though. I'm going to have to see what I can find within a 1-tank driving distance, because I can't see a 20-hour drive (under good conditions) being feasible.

NanaQuilts,

Unfortunately for Texans, it doesn't much matter where you are, the closest "next" town of any size is likely 4 hours away! It alters the way you think about distance - when I was working in Lowell, Mass. a coworker wanted to go to a hobby shop in Vermont I started thinking ,"well it's two states away so do we have time before sunset etc. He reminded me we weren't in Texas at the time! From Houston, in any direction its a several hour drive to the next big town. Lots of distance; that can be a plus for some things but is a definite problem for others.

You might find Northeast Texas closer to country you're comfortable in. Not mountains but some wooded, hill country. The area just north of the boarder in Oklahoma is where you run into mountains. The Arkla-Tex, Oklahoma areas are the beginning of Orzark mountain country. The other Texas mountainous areas are in the Big Bend area (think Mcdonald Observatory) but that area is nothing like the Allegheny

I want to move to SW Colorado and I think that would be an ideal survival location for me. Milder temperature than other Rocky Mountain locations, lots of fresh water, not very accessible, large national forests, arable land, and not that it really matters, but a stunning landscape as well.

Capt. Bart,

I don't know how I missed your response, but I did. I've visited up in the Palestine area - beautiful and more homey feeling to me. My husband, bless his demented heart, felt claustrophobic with all the trees, although not as much as in my Appalachian mountain home. Something about not being able to see the Indians sneaking up on him. It seemed cruel to remind him that he had one (okay, only 1/8) in the house already. And I could handle living in the Ozarks; that's gorgeous country.

H isn't interested in moving, as his job pretty much ties him here, but who knows what will happen down the road.

Yep, Texas is big..and its a ways between citys...but the problem I see is that we have em.

Houston will spread out going North, NE, NW.

San Antonio will spread out every which way

Dallas/Ft Worth will do the same

And me? I'm surrounded by em.

I'm looking at locations out of state. The bigest problem that I have is lack of family to group up with.

I live in Maine so I am in a group that has a location in the mountains of western Maine. My concern is that we are still a tank of gas away from a couple of large metropolitan areas. I'm pretty sure that there will be a mass exodus from these areas to northern New England to try to take what the rednecks have. With the group I am in now I have no concern that they will ever get to our supplies.

Capt Bart......I live in WV and rifles shots of 1000 yards and more can be made in plenty of locations...I have an area where shots can be close to a mile....with the logging and gas exploration that is going on long range shots and the places to setup are numerous....WV has no major military bases, not on any great fault lines, tornado's are very rare and climate is very manageable compared to the North, South, East and West.....

Too each according to their abilities... I would be lost in snow. Since I've never had to deal with it I don't want to start during adverse conditions so North is out. Conversely I guess people that are not used to the heat need to stay out of most of Texas. Almost every day I read about people dying from the heat in the Midwest this year in heat that I consider a fairly normal level. We can have 100 degree temps any time from the first of May through sometime in September and 90s ANY month of the year. When it's hot you stay in the shade and do outdoor stuff in the morning and evenings. No biggie...to someone raised in it.

I was born in Texas and live in East Texas my entire life and plan on dying here. I can grow food almost year around with just a little effort. There are all manner of waterways full of fish and forests full of critters to eat. Because most Texans are not just armed but WELL armed and familiar with their use we have an almost instant solution to gangs and violence. In general in the past the police protect the criminals more than they protect us. The new laws are changing that. Take out the law-enforcement aspect and in general you will shortly have a very polite and peaceful people.

I don't fear my neighbors. If we just stopped exporting our foods there is more to eat than there are people here...much like the plains of Kansas and Nebraska. I personally think that running off to someplace where nobody knows you and trying to hide will be a disaster. People tend to get clannish during hard times and outsiders may not fare well. If you're going to go, do it now and become one of the locals and not one of the refugees.

If you live in Minnesota then you know what you need to survive and the best place for you is there. The same is true of the swamps of the south and the desert plains of the west. Hell Eskimos lived pretty well on the ice and tundra. The places that you need to get the hell away from are the megalopolises. Nothing good is going to come out of being in the NYC area, the LA area and other such places. Too many people not nearly enough resources PLUS the criminals are way better armed than the citizens.

The BEST place to survive will be the place that YOU personally are most familiar with as long as it is not close to a massive population center and provides basic access to water and foods. The human body requires FAR less than people generally think to get by.

I was born in Palestine! As my daughter reminds me it was the FIRST half of the LAST century! It is beautiful country but I spent most of my time flying around open prairie and coastal plains. Not a lot of forced landing spots out in the 'Big Thicket' country. Still, I love the mountains as well as the deserts. It would be a hard choice between the two for me. I think the mountains would win but it'd be close.

I've done some flying out in WV. Beautiful country, that. I've heard the eastern mountains describe as 'old lady' mountains. Softer and not so tall or rugged as the western mountains. While I agree with the term, I think the Smokies are one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I love the western ranges but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the eastern ranges. Good location.

hi all

some good post here.i live in nw IN.everyone here says eastern ky is where they're heading,in the event. which to me says it's going to be the next largest city in the world.i like the cold climate also, bbuuuttttt it's more than difficult to hide tracks in snow.it takes high winds or more snow to hide them.i have ghosting in mind.swamps, marshes, boggs can be great friends.e z to hide or ghost.most people can't travel without a boat.once you learn these things, the fear of them leaves.plenty to eat.

How can you tell what is the best place to survived,if the event has not happen yet?;this could be right at the spot that your thinking off.You build your cabin, and the meteor falls right on top of it,then what.

I always remenber the movie,THE RUSSIANS ARE COMMING,and all they wanted was a push.

Jerry,

Other countries are touchy. Only in the US are your rights God given. Everywhere else they are given by the state. Things like the 'right to bear arms' do not exist anywhere else. There are possibilities (New Zealand, Costa Rica, some islands) but they all have significant draw backs. Not the least of the drawbacks is the distance from family. It is a LONG trip to New Zealand. The lack of like minded individuals also makes you stand out a bit. Harder to be gray. Then things like 'hate' crimes laws mean that places like Canada are off my list. Tough call.

Canada is a great place to live. My biggest concern of late, is the influx of female ninjas/carpet drivers that want to impose their home land rules/by-laws into the country of Canada. They need to need to make a 180 degree turn back home.

How expensive to live there?

Her home-country, 3.5 of their dollars to our $1. But this ratio has slipped a bit because the dollar has slipped. But I tihnk its still like 3.2:$1

I've lived there with her family for more than a year, so heres how it their money works:

a decent Bungalow home, semi-Detached, New, is around $120k of their money. Their domestic cars, comparable to a Ford Fusion, new, $30,000 of thier money. $120k for a house+ $30k for auto= $150k / 3.2 = $46, 875 US Dollars. You can see why its attractive.

Wife and I shopped at the 'morning market' every morning to buy food for the day. Her family had a refridgerator but didnt work very well. A NICE fridg over there is considered a REAL luxury item. Here in the US, the private sector is being crushed by franchise and corporations. Over there, the private sector is EVERYTHING!! We could buy all the food for the day, for 5 people, for (thinking) $20 of their money / 3.2= $6.25 USD. Not much corporate anything. Not much govt regulation either. A private sector, running itself, the govt mearly places price caps on commodities, forcing price competition within the private sector. With a prvate sector running itself, with healthy internal competition, it becomes VERY important to find a vendor (for whatever you are looking for) that is honest and trustworthy. You'll quickly learn how important it is to establish a repor with vendors. But you MUST approach any vendor initially as suspect for being a thief and cheat. DOnt be naive believing in a natural 'goodness' of all people.

I am in the land of 10,000 lakes. That's a lot of water, although the closest one to me is only about a mile away, that's still a long ways to hump water. The winters are cold, the summers are hot and muggy. The wind blows a lot! But the land is very productive, and there are wells just about everywhere you look, due to the sheer numbers of farms. Small game is more than plentiful if you aren't picky, and there is generally fish in all those lakes, again if you aren't to picky. Plenty of deer for larger game, but that would go quickly when everyone is hunting them. There is a lot of hog production in this area, and should result in a large population of wild hogs foraging after shtf.

Small towns abound around the area with no real large city to contend with. The largest population around is only about 100,000 and that is over 60 miles away. Undoubtedly there will be some migration through here, but certainly nothing like the big cities.

The down side is trees are scarce here on the prairies, and fuel for heating is an issue. having a survivable shelter that needs little heat is paramount for winter.

In short, there are some things to overcome, but I live in a naturally occurring B.O.L.
