Bow Advice

Recommended Posts

When I was younger I used to do archery quite a bit. I was thinking about taking it up again and purchasing a bow. I was looking around at a large flea market I was at this past weekend and there were bows and arrows all over the place. Unfortunately, I am completely out of date and had no way of evaluating the equipment.

I would appreciate some advice on what are decent manufacturers and how to look for equipment. Thanks!

Rod.

The bows today are much smaller and light weight.

More balanced and such. Try the PSE site. Many affordable bows.

It would help to know what you used to shoot.

Feel free to pm me if you want to talk more about this subject.

P.S.

Im no expert but will help if I can.

My son, daughter, & my self are into archery for sports fun & hunting use as well. We own Bowtech bows, all of them compound bows. Own a japanese long bow & a couple recurves as well. My daughter is a captain in the archery school team & she says it's much more challangeing than shooting rifles, which i feel she's right.

From the standpoint of this forum, which would be better: a compound bow or a recurve bow?

I'd say recurve. If the string broke, in the compound bow, one would need a special machine to re string it. The recurve i could do it with my hands & legs. There are alot of companys that make decent bows these days. PSE, Mathews, Bowtech, Hoit, etc. It boils down to personal taste, cost & ones budget. My next bow will be a takedown bow for SHTF , BOB bow.

just buy more subsonic ammo and a chamber conversion 32ACP in a .308

7.62x25 in a 7.62x54 arrows are good but still they are large and noisy unless in a hard quiver

compound bows are very powerful for large game but do not stop them in their tracks just watch any

of the hunting shows so on dangerous game could be dicey I have lost arrows hunting and they are not cheap

add in a expensive broad head and carbon fiber arrows how are you going to replace them? arrows are not like

ammo people do not have thousands on hand or even multiple hundreds.

this is an issue if your place is raided or burns the loss will place you in a bad situation.

I do not see the cost savings nor the difference in noise reduction if the proper round and weapon

are used.

200 bucks for a 22 and a variety of ammo is a better cost and power acuracy and from a tall stand shooting down into the between the brow most all deer can be taken easily.

Sorry folks I just do not get it if I am forced to be in the woods and possible incounters with others

then I have to carry a "rod" with the bow why not carry a backpack full of spears and try to run through

brush with them.

a bow is not a deft sleek weapon and I have seen people buying sights and strings cam parts and blah blah

since I bought my rifle I havee only bought optional equipment I could have left it alone and it would still

be perfect for what is was designed for.

some are so use to using a release that finger cocking is not even a thought nothing on the bow is common

you are not going to find it in the wild, is there a carbon fiber tree I am not aware of.

with cam leaves and fiber optic pins for anthers in the flowers and all them little parts what tree do they fall off of .

Ok I get a bow and arrows a hard quiver and a release and cammo up go out and kill a deer and as I am bringing it back I run into a bunch of guys from the movie deliverence "squeel like a pig boy.

so how much ammo and what "rod" are we suppose to have to get the deer back to the old homestead?

Because I think that the woods will be full of people who are homeless and looking for food living in everything

from rock and stick hovels and watching and listening around your place and follow you.

consider the fox he aint a big game hunter but he eats from the hunters table by theft, and stealth.

and crows and buzzards have yet to die off.

I can snare anything I can shoot with a bow and they ain't going to run away in stead of a twitch trigger you use

a hand trip and are more sure to entrap your animal.

Recurve bows are good for bird hunting at night using fluflu with blunts {no don't roll a blunt} a small game tip and a short flight arrow. but flashing a light around you need quite a few folks watching your back.

Depends on your purpose and challenge level if your looking for ease of use reliability, light weight , accuracy, and power for hunting, fighting or survival than a modern compound is you best choice if your a traditionalist with already developed archery skills and can not only use an off the shelf but craft your own bow, arrows and broad heads. Than go with a recurve or short bow. Personally I do both but to be honest I prefer my compound it allows me a lot of cushion in the size of the game I can take and although I am accurate with tradional bow with my coumpound my accuracy at 50 yards is measured by half inches instead of goup measured over an 8 inch area at 30 to 35 yrds and that seems to be pretty standard for those of us who grew up with traditional bows who transition to compounds PSE, Mathews, BowTech, Hoyt, and Mission all make great bowsand you really have to feel and shoot them to find the best for you a year ago I went out looking to get a Z7 by mathews and it just wasn't there for me the clerk put the new Bowtech Assassin and it was love at first release and to make it better the Assassin is a package bow ready to shoot out of the box for $650 compared to the Z7 wich I was prepared to fork out 1300 foryeah all that extra went straight to other preps and I got a bow that launches an arrow at 336 feet per second cronographed

Don't disagree with you at all snake. I simply have the time and money to broaden my skill set and have enjoyed archery in the past.

Besides, if S. M. Stirling's "Dies The Fire" series comes true, I will be just a little ahead of the pack!

In response to Snake a bullet will never be as quiet as a bow even with a suppressor and yes in an end of the world scenario your points are valid except the animal needing to be tracked in fact most gun hunters do not get instant knockdowns and kills and still need to track their game with a lot of added noise. We are not just talking a free for all TEOTWAWKI what about subsistance and non collapse survival, economic but non societal collapse and as for those adapters, they are a real easy way to permenently make you rifle a subcaliber gun.I still have the handi rifle to prove it gave it to my six year old daughter. To remove the adapter which was supposed to be removable will damage the breech it expanded in the breach. Those of us that do hunt bow and are experienced rarely run around looking for our game at night or during the day in thirty eight years I have only had three animals run farther than 125 yards with a solid vitals hit a Cape Buffalo a Saiga and a Moose I don't know about you but I am not dumb enough to track them through the dark they can wait till the sun comes up. A .22 is descent on deer and smaller if your good most aren't. Still noisy enough to reverb and echo in hill and mountain country which can draw unwanted complaints and attention. Arrows are reusable and recoverable every season I buy a half dozen in the last five years I have lost or broken 4, 3 in competition 1 hunting (went through those runt deer they have in Texas and hit the solid sandstone they call dirt in central Texas and the arrow exploded

I am thinking about a bow for hunting because, as has been pointed out, it can take down fair size game and it is quiet. No sense letting people miles away know someone is around and is hunting.

All of my shooting has been with a recurve. Does the string on a compound bow last significantly less time than on a recurve?

IMHO.

A recurve has less to go wrong with it.

I have both types, but in a bug out i would take the recurve.

Thanks Urban Wolf! I appreciate yours and everyone's comments.

hey that wasn't a deer, it was a Doberman pincer with antlers or a jackalope

http://users.stargate.net/~mnovak/jackalopes/pics/

and there is a Texas jackalope for Ya' mostly seen after too many shots of Mezcal tequila or to-kill-ya'

or spot light hunting with a few to many under your belt.

subsistence hunting we call spotlighting when I was a kid or defending the garden.

and what mountains {looking around confused} we ain't got no mountains round here.

and yep we got hard dirt the soft dirt called swamp is east of us. we got clay that make you taller the more you walk on it we got some that is so slick you cant drive in it or ride a horse in it unless its on flat ground.

and during the drought you can lose a rifle in the cracks and a grown man can't put a dent in it with a pick.

yep if it were not for the cold spells this place would be perfect {perfect place for HELL} but I like it. LOL

yea we got some mountains but the are more like a pile of sharp rocks yep we got everything except shade.

in some places and water and in others we got shade but 90+ degrees and 90% humidity.

then we go places where there is no where to sit {cactus cactus everywhere and not a drop to drink}

we got alligators and water moccasins on one side scorpions and tarantulas and rattlesnakes on the other.

and if it were not hot enough we put Jalapeños or salsa on everything but cereal and and when I was young

I put cold beer over my corn flakes.

yea we got everything except a decent wind break between here and Canada.

And thats what I like about the south LMAO

A recurve will pack better and easy to repair.

Compound will work better.

I like Mathews bc they are lite and small in frame.

Best use might be for fishing with a reel on the end.

Like your rifle, ammo or arrows, will be a huge expense and broadheads make the difference.

I own many fire arms. But in a survival thought I purchaced a Ten Point cross bow. Is deadly and Ive never had to track a deer. Most they have moved was about 20 yrds from where they were hit. Will it be in my BOV O hell yea Along with a quiver full of bolts.
