CHat feature for logged-in members

Recommended Posts

While participating in the forum, we have the ability to see if someone is logged on or not by the Green dot next to the members name.

How about adding a chat feature, like in facebook, allowing us to have live chat with other logged-in members ?

I agree - this would be a really cool feature to have built into the site. I've actually seen some forums with a chat feature that use the same forum system as this one... not sure if it's a plug-in or an option or what.

Granted, the chat setups I've seen are nowhere near the polished level of Facebook's chat system, just a single chat room that all members have access to. I think it's better to have that setup as opposed to Facebook's simply because we already have Private Messaging for peer-to-peer chat.

I like the present version some times a moment to reflect instead of shooting from the hip as it were

limits flaming and testy snapping at one another.

opsec get a bit bent out of shape as people think they know each other when they converse in real time.

this makes being grey more tricky and flippant remarks could give out more information than is

judiciously meant by the poster.

Chat also has some security issues even with antivirus and internet security.

wanting is better than having in some instances IMHO.

Yea, I kinda made a poll about this, and asked who'd like to see a chat feature?

It went by the wayside quick. Just as well.

I also thought it'd be cool but after rethinking it, "NOT". The IM works just as well

and you can converse with as many as you'd like.

I agree with Snake. I am not a fan of that idea. If I wanted to do something like that I would be on Facebook. I am not and will not, causes too many problems.

I agree, a chat would be great. People would be able to communicate right away rather than waiting for somebody the respond to a thread post. Chatango lets you imbed a chat onto sights, not sure if it costs much though.

I'm not a fan of chats. In my experience, they tend to absorb great amounts of time without, I fear, adding much to the content level. I'd find moderating a chat taxing beyond my limited abilities.

The folks here all seem to be adults rather than the somewhat juvenile purveyors of "bovine scatology" (thanks to Gen. Norman Schwarzkop) that too often infest chat rooms. I know that may be a biased opinion but I have rarely been accused of having an open mind.

I agree with femvet. "Chatting" would divert us from the purpose of this forum, I fear.
