newbie questioning the overall concept of a lot of peoples "plan"

Recommended Posts

im sure to get flamed for this but ive read some of the posts here and while there are some good ideas i question the long term sustainability of it all... let me 1st tell who i am 37 m usmc infantry instructor who now is an rn.. id like to think i have some abilities to hold my own when it came to survival.. i know how to make a fire without a lighter.. i know how to distill water be it with the sun or a parabolic mirror heat boil etc etc i know how to use the sun to tell direction make a sundial make weapons and im sure that i would have SOME real world preparations for defense night vision scope on a cross bow is my weapon of choice HOWEVER that is all 2nd or 3rd or 4th choice

my questioning of this board is i see most people on here (in my opinion) are taking the wrong stance as a whole...you are coming from the mindset of "me and my family against the world" and id have to disagree with that mentality... you can have your ar15 and learn jiu jitsu and have 300lbs of rice and enough to water and plants saved up to last you 20 years but all it takes is one ambush to end all your preparations in vain ..i see most people on here talking about how they will run away from the chaos of the world to sail their boats to deserted islands in the carribean and desalinate water and live off the land "me and mine against the world" mentality

i have another option......that i dont see much of.... HELP EVERYONE... dont give your stuff away GIVE KNOWLEDGE away... have something worth bartering...thats how society is reestablished to begin with isnt it? bartering system? people working together as a whole instead of each person for them selves..... combine your skills and things of value with another person.... openly invite newbies in...in the event of total end of civilization as we know it... why not have something worth bartering give knowledge and establish a small micro community that will grow and have people working together so you dont have to worry about hiding your mini farm of potatoes

ill tell my plan... im stockpiling yes but only (well mainly) stock piling reverse osmosis kits... water treatment systems ..making a HUGE parabolic mirror to boil large amounts of water for a massive distiller..so that it can sustain water for a large amount of people... and when i see someone who is dehydrated ..takin them in under my wing.. (yes for a price..i give water you now become x needed service..be it fishing security and let the community grow each person freely being invited to join with acceptance that they will provide for the whole...teach people how to survive and how to contribute to the community if they dont already know how... to quote my fav tv show... "we can either live together or die alone" most peoples plans are to survive in isolation away from everyone else ...mine is different... reestablish the community ... safety is in numbers my friends and what is the point of living at all if you and your family is hunkered down in your bunker eating rice and bugs

my point is... make yourself too valuable to not be welcomed in... and teach everyone how to survive ... i can tell you now my plan ... have a couple weeks worth of food... some well thought out means of protection.. handgun that can be hidden to seem vulnerable..cross bow nightscope for stealth... just enought to survive the first month...but then the goal is to reestablish and be "marketable" i will have multiple reverse osmosis kits parabolic mirror destiller and market myself as having the ability to provide many many people with safe drinking water and knowledge and try to begin rebuilding and establish a "mini government"

I think you have the right idea, for alot of scenarios, where I live, you would get along great and probably do quite well...however I can't speak for those who may live in a urban setting, but I would welcome you as a neighbor.

Most folks on the boards here have some friends or family to join up with. I think we all would help anybody that came along, but the biggest thing is getting ourselves prepared first. I have a next door neighbor and one across the street that have a similar mindset and are prepping. We keep an eye out for each other's homes while the others are away, we look out after each other. We also have some great margarita parties on those warm summer evenings. My next door neighbor just bought a used riding mower. First thing he said to me was, "hey! I found us a riding mower. My boys'll be over to cut your yard next weekend.".

We're getting together with them next Saturday to go pick veggies in the morning and spend all afternoon canning them. We've all prepped seperately, but will join together if the shtf or even if times get tough.

Don't suppose you'd want to move to Mobile? We wouldn't mind having some medical expertise in the neighborhood! Oh well, maybe we can find somebody around here. Thanks for your service!

My Dad was a former Marine. That makes you family! Semper Fi Uncle!

my basic point is... stock pile knowledge and give it away for free and help EVERYONE not just family.. there will be a lot of hungry thirsty people... teach people how to destill water.. make spear guns...live like the indians ..live off the land and teach anyone and everyone how to do it (not now...theyd look at you like one of the idiots holding "end of times" signs on the side of the road" lol) i mean when SHTF.. they will be lost..a person with knowledge on how to provide food and water consistantly to a large amount of people will soon find he has a small army following

Whgoff,

I guess you can see we aren't a community given to a lot of "flame on" comments. Everbody has their own plans and contingencies based on the circumstances of their life and surroundings. I see a lot of folks who make provisions for charity, after taking care of their own family first and your plan has a good chance for making you a valued member of your community. Couple that with your military and medical training and you should be welcomed where ever you end up.

I have to agree with this. THe circumstance you find yourself in, or think is mostly likely , is what people prepare against. Living in a dense Urban area as I do... helping others, will probably get me killed. Sure, there is a natural human need to be around others and to be part of a community. This has been discussed in many other threads. But there is ALOT of grey-time between that X SHTF event and if/when you are able to similate back into some form of a community. Depending on the event, this could take a very long time. The question is.... How do I live, keeping 'me and mine' SAFE UNTIL... we can become part of a new community that forms on the other side of that X event. Most discussions fall into that 'Grey-Time' of how to deal with stuff.

whgoff, you bring up good points. Even making up mini-manuals that you could share with people if you can't support them on your own property - rudimentary instructions on foraging, making traps, medicine, etc. - that they could take with them would at least give people a chance to fend for themselves.

Along those lines, keeping "starter kits" on hand might be a good goal once you have your own needs taken care of, with basics like fishing line/hooks, containers for water, tarps/bedding for shelter and sleeping, some first aid items, etc. Even having cheap knives and stuff found at Goodwill or yard sales to share would be a huge blessing to people who are almost utterly without resources of their own.

No argument here, I've always considered Survival a Team Sport and thought it foolish to go it alone. Perhaps modern technologies have made us a bit too independent/isolated from each other and that's why it's hard to trust people.

I have a lot of practical technical skills but tooling up my skill sets on alt-power and health care and military tactics, aside from survival skills.

Im right there with ya. I have this hand-written notebook I write in when i run across a lil tidbit of info thats new to me. Ill have to rewrite it as the topic matter isnt organized at all. But like you said... Alt-Power, healthcare, First aid tips, mechanic stuff. SOmething I just added to my list of things to research... how to make real tangible homemade anti-biotics (not just talking about chewing on some leaves)

I love reading all this drivel

I am not helping anyone after the hammer falls, this is it boys and girls so we have another socialist

give away everything have you not heard people do not respect what is given that is why man works.

If you must give away everything try doing it now as it is in no way different in the best of times as

in the worst of times.

greedy people will kill you for your pocket change now so how do you think it will change later and

who is to say that those you teach will not use the knowledge to enslave others?

Ho Chi Mhin lived in New York he lived in the greatest nation in the world and could not make it here

instead went back to Vietnam and caused the death of 70+ thousand Americans and millions of

Vietnamese Cambodians and Laotians.

I like the way everyone thinks they can save someone you cannot save anyone from themselves

I know the saying give a man a fish and he eats for a day teach a man to fish and will never starve.

they forgot one thing they will kill each other over the best fishing grounds.

or if they are the only ones who caught fish they will sell to the highest bidder and be damned the poor.

the more things change the more things remain the same I love all these high ideals they are so well

thought out.

disease will be rampant so you will teach them how from a tree house like the pope from the Vatican

balcony flinging your blessings from the parapet safe from the crush of humanity they have tried to

kill him an unarmed man who only attempts to give some solace weather you believe or not he is not

shooting or beating anyone from his pope mobile.

so your better than the Pope?

January 30, 1948 Gandhi was assassinated by a fanatic

so now your better than Ghandi

Buddha's death from eating mushrooms an accident or were they a gift or was he so hungry he

made a mistake?

so now maybe your appreciators may accidentally kill you with a gift.

do gooders have been murdered and killed by someone who hates someone you helped

Lincoln wanted people to be free that was a good reason to kill him.

Hitler wanted for Germany to be strong and his power got away from him, and in a post apocalyptic

or with sparse communication how are you going to reach the masses and how about those who

are too sick or frail once they reach the all knowing all seeing one, you know how rumor mill is you

start out as a survival teacher and then by the time it gets out your a spiritual healer or wizard.

People never learn your the first and only one who ever though of anything you know it all and want to

save everyone well that's nice but it cannot be done and even if you teach them how to get water

make fire they can die from 10,000 other ways.

I do not mind teaching people I do it now but after an event I want the purge to be over with.

and when I am old and grey they will help me right? do not count on that BUD!

I have helped many many people and NOT much there are some and some lip service now and again.

the Khmer rouge killed teachers and every government official it did not matter if you were a

teacher of farming or a health worker if you were a southern pro democracy you were targeted and

killed.

apparently people forget why and what happened oh that is right history is a waste of TIME.

oh and any pilgrimage of those who hear of your wisdom the route will be

covered with robbers and cheats as in every case it has happened

so that would make you responsible fro their misery and death on the way

to where you are so your a real help thousands have died on they way

to find wealth or knowledge so that would make you the cause right?

I`m with you Marine,ex-Army myself,no one will survived alone,I have stated that before,by helping those in need we will be helping ourselfs in rebuilding a stronger comunity after whatever disaster happens to be,this great nation was build by a band of rebels fighting

together,not alone,By sharing my bread,I will be starting a community.B)

Indeed, we all need a "tool bag" and it's a collective thing so every bit of info will only help you and yours. Homade antibiotics, now that's a great idea! Healthcare will be a number one skill in demand. I'm very fortunate in that the town Doctor here is a good friend of mine. Have not approached him about prepping but medicine is his passion and I think he'd be willing to share all kinds of knowledge with me and even get meds critical meds I need to stock up to a point.

Could not agree more, don't look forward to camping for the next 20 years after a major SHTF.....my house will have power, running water and toilets that flush right away....I think keeping the bad guys out is my biggest challenge.

Justcallmesnake. Yes you are correct some people will be wrongdoers no matter what. Crime will happen even to good people it does now it did in the past and will in the future. Maybe I misspoke when I said give things away. My " plan" is more of an employer so to speak. Even that isn't politically correct it's a. "yeah I got enough water for a crap load of people indefinitely so let's make a deal I'll get all the water u will ever need u go spear me some lobsters. Maybe have your new partner make a huge enough fish trap to feed 100 people so the next person that comes along. Hey we will give u all the food and water you will need u supply protection. Etc etc and the pyramid never ends till u have someone chopping wood for the gasifier one person tending the farm one supplying water build and build till u are having mini elections so or person doesn't become the dictator. Crime will be a problem disease will be a problem but ur problems multiply in isolation. Who do u think the rebels will attack the small family with the generator and 200 cans of chef boy r dee or an island with 100 people on it all working together? Is it possible there will be another 100 person army that will attack us sure but they will get u long before us. Some of the inhabitants of hypothetical island may even wreck their surfboards into the coral reefs and die from an infection but I'd rather die that way than hunkered down in a shelter blowing out candles and hoping no one hears my generator. To each their own but when u get tired of living in fear sneakin to your waterhole or squirrel traps in your ghillea suit c'mon down to gun cay off Bimini well meet you at the beach with some ice water and a lobster tail

sounds like your on top of it now this I can understand I wish you well I think it can work and it has in the past.

well like I said after the initial purge we should be able to assemble and trade or work together

I hope we will have learned something as a society about respecting each other but as always

new generations have to learn things the hard way ... I know I was guilty of that learning the hard way.

and I like Bimini hell the islands may be a good place but I figure piracy will come back in fashion

so be ready to repel borders LOL

actually you gave me the missing puzzle of how to not be overran with people without making a huge army with RPGS and 50cals and shooting everyone once it was at max occupancy ...how not to have a small tiny island with 1000 people crawling off it and eating/drinking up the resources..... FAKE PLAGUE.. with fake burial plots saying "joe blow..died of TUBERCULOSIS..." "mary jane...died airborne herpes" (lol) one person on lookout with binoculars and have a costume bag of lesions for everyone to suit up on for people coming to visit... somehow i dont think pirates will be interested in festation island lol THANK YOU for the idea!!
