Prepping for the urban sophisticate

Recommended Posts

I saw an ad for a chicken coop that was designed so that the bulk of it was on wheels and it could be moved, wheelbarrow-style, around a pasture to allow chickens to free forage rather than having to supply them with grains. This struck me as pretty smart, so imagine my surprise when I discovered it was a new product from Williams-Sonoma, the high-end kitchen goods store!

It turns out that they are launching a whole new product line called Agrarian selling everything from tools to seeds to do-it-yourself cheese making and kits to start beekeeping!

They sell heirloom seeds, including "seed bombs" that you just toss on soil and water, and they somehow magically grow into little gardens that contain everything you need to garnish cocktails (no, I'm not kidding). Some of their other seed packets are a little more practical, but that one had me giggling.

This is likely to be high-quality stuff, but it's also high-style with the price tag to match. If I could prep with no budget, I'd be seriously temped by some of this. But it also makes me laugh to think about spending $25 for four jam jars, $200 for a copper long-handled spade, or $700 for a potting table.

THats an awsome idea... mobile chicken coop. If you havent ever raised chickens, they'll peck the ground clean bare, down to nothin but bare dirt.

I thought it was pretty smart, too. Here's a link to their mobile chicken coop:

It would be worth thinking about incorporating something similar into your own chicken coop design, if you can't afford to purchase this one from Williams-Sonoma.

Why not just let the chickens run free? My parents do and my wife's parents do and most other people with chickens do. Sounds like a product that should be placed on a late night infomercials. Having problem feeding your chickens? Do they just keep pecking in the same area? Well dont you worry cause scientist at Harvard University has created the Alexandria Chicken Coop and for three low payments of $299.99 the ACC can be yours and if you call within the next 10 minutes we will give you some chickens. A $99 value absolutely free! So call now! 1-800-Americans-are-Gullible

we just built a coop with metal studs and used cattle panel under it and drug it with a tractor

rednecks got it going on FIRST may be looks a little jethro but them chickens don't mind.

I would feed them anyway I used a hanging gravity feeder and gravity waterer.

and clean the water dispenser or trough as they get it dirty.

in the hot summer we put a large end cap from metal AC duct and put water in it so they could wade

in it helps them to keep cool with good shade.

winter wrap with plastic to keep out wind and you may need a heater

one trick I used was like a frostex mobile home water line heater

make sure

it is long enough to run the length of their roost bar use zip ties to hold it

in metal conduit 1 inch slide it into 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 in PVC drilled ever few

inches, this keeps it from getting too hot and heat to rise under the

chickens do not close either pipe end you want air to move

so it does not get too hot, it also keeps the PVC from breaking or bending.

to keep mosquitoes off them a fan and spray their back with some

10 % lemon oil mixed with 90 % mineral oil and a box fan.

here is a link for oils for mosquitoes don't use non food ones on animals.

http://altmedicine.about.com/od/aznaturalremedyindex/a/mosquito.htm

and make sure not to get it in their eyes {do it at night with a dim light}

I always find treats for my animals especially if they are penned chickens love melons

get the old ones and other stuff from the grocery trash 1/4 them and watch the fun

any vegetable some may not like it but some will old bread if it is hard soak it in a pan of water for them.

I have eaten my stock but I do not mistreat them while they live it is not right if you raise animals

they are your responsibility and you need to try to care for them as best as you can.

they need excitement and adventure too cut corn on the cob into 4 pieces or the melon trick

and they go nuts,

give them all the table scraps { NEVER BUT NEVER FEED AN ANIMAL TO ITSELF} no chicken to chicken etc.

hell they don't even keep convicts in a cell with nothing 24 hours a day,

they should but they don't.

    • Hey all, This is sort of cool (okay really cool) and maybe some of you have heard about it because it's been plastered over FOX and mentioned by POTUS as well as other conservative-leaning news people (Huckabee, Diamond/Silk, Candace Owens, Mark Levin, etc..) and politicians. #walkaway is a movement based mostly on social media. Started last year, by Brandon Straka (pronounced Strawk - like "straw" with a "k"). He's a former 2016 HRC-voting hair stylist, from NE, now in NYC, homosexual, liberal who began to question the MSM and what he was hearing. He got really frustrated as he began to do his own research. Anyway, after having his own awakening to the lies of MSM he had been following, he began an online testimonial campaign in which former liberals can post their #walkaway stories, written or video. Many are now on the "Trump Train." Many have simply left the Left. Still, others have always been non-Left and are members in support. The amazing thing is how many different people from all walks of life are beginning to wake up. Lots are not conservative on all issues, but all have a love for the USA and dislike the demonization of open political and social thinkers and speakers. This group gives solace to people scared to voice their conservative opinions or views for fear of negative professional or personal responses. It now has budding smaller groups in all 50 states and an online discussion group where people discuss current topics or issues (WITH no vitriol, gasp).  Here's the original video from Brandon.  www.youtube.com/watch?v=51UGcghHZsk This man, Brandon has a unique, stylish, well-articulated voice to help move people "in hiding" out into the open and not be silenced. Pretty much any video Brandon does is great. Here is the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/OFFICIALwalkawaycampaign/ As I see fights erupt online, I simply leave #walkaway in the comments. Brandon has a goal of 1 million members! The liberal media has called this campaign "Russian Bots" and "paid actors." It's not!!!
    • thanks to all who  have served or are serving our great country....243 years in the making....   Trump did a good job today thanking each branch of our military and a long time coming salute to the coast guard too....
    • I can imagine food prices going up this Fall or Winter. Corn is used for live stock feed, & us humans consume a lot of corn based products, as well as corn based biofuel. I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the mid-west of America, which is flooded by water. Where corn  & other crops are normally grown there. Farmers are quite worried about this years growing season. Time to stock up on extra food if you can, if you haven’t already. Stack it high, stack it deep. Store the foods that you normally eat. What ever the  amount of food you’ve stored,  try to double it if possible. Better extra safe, than sorry.
