survival tips and tricks

I always remember human beings have been living off the Earth for millions of years and I am smarter than any caveman, also I remember that Man is the most dangerous animal on the planet.

I don't like to quibble (sounds of my bride laughing at me in the background) but if you're talking about Homo Saipiens we've been around for well less than 200,000 years.

The fossils include two adult males and one child and are estimated to be 160,000 years old. They were found among stone tools and butchered hippopotamus bones. Cut marks on the skulls suggest an early form of mortuary practice.

If you include ALL ancestor humans like Australopithecus africanus http://humanorigins.si.edu/evidence/human-fossils/species/australopithecus-africanus then you are correct in the age but I am not all that sure we are actually smarter than they were. I get to use the tools and knowledge of the age to play games with the earth's magnetic field (I actually modulated the earth's B field once - that was COOL and NERDY as h*ll but I did it and I LIKED doing so! B)) and such but the old boys had to INVENT, out of whole cloth, the club, fire, hunting, knives, spears, dogs (setting up our relationship with dogs may have been one of their GREATEST accomplishments - my bride's Papillon is sitting on the back of my chair reading over my shoulder as I type this), shoes, clothes - EVERYTHING. I think we are way too proud of how much 'smarter' we are than the old boys who invented EVERYTHING. Our conceit is totally unwarranted given the facts.

Just my not so humble opinion.

So we are all learning and growing together. I thought we could start a thread were we could posts tips and tricks to survival that we have learned along the way. Anything and everything.

Learn to be quiet, and practice noise discipline until its second nature. In nature, noisy things get eaten/killed by the quieter things. The flip side of that is learn to listen - take time to sort out all of the sounds you hear, and condition yourself to notice anything unusual. You can often hear trouble long before you see it.

Yes, BUT, no one of the "old boys" invented all the things you mentioned and they to were the lucky beneficiaries of their forefathers - so we have the benefit of eons of wisdom and accumulated knowledge and also being farther down the evolutionary road. So, yes I do consider myself "smarter" than the average caveman (actually many humans I know too!) and much better equipped to survive in my time period. As for your wifes opinion about your place in the evolutionary chain I refrain from any involvement in that discussion.

Along with learning to be quite you should learn situational awareness. Be aware of your surroundings know what is going on around you it will help keep you alive. Avoiding bad situations is better than being caught in the middle of one.

a little game to play which helps improve your situational awareness. when you are out in public see if you can recognize people you know before they recognize you. one point if your first. subtract one point if they are first.

this gets you into the mode of looking for possible "threats". then you can work on not being obvious.

you can also play "I spy" with the kids.

chap-stick is a must. get the medicated type. works for lips. works on chaffing. put it on your eye brows and sweat rolls away from your eyes. helps lube zippers. acts as a temporary seam sealer. lubes squeaky back pack parts.

It also works in a pinch to apply to cotton for tinder, like putting vaseline on cotton balls. Helps it act as a wick to burn longer. I am sure you all know this, but since it wasn't mentioned in your post, thought I would add it.

I would add that language is one of Humans greatest accomplishments. Without it, many other skills would not be passed on and future accomplishments would never manifest. I think we can argue that our language makes us "smarter" than cavemen. Although, we would have nothing if not for the inventions over our ancestors. Therefore, its a moot point to call ourselves smarter.

you can live for:

-three minutes without air

-three hours without shelter

-three days without water

-three weeks without food.

and that should put your prepping goals into perspective.

A common sense thing, put i dont think anyone mentioned it...

Always check yourself other each other for Ticks and such.

When you stop to rest on the trail, be cautious of where you sit your booty.. it might not be a good spot, be it on top of a snake, a badger den, etc. etc.

Spiders... usually remove the web if they leave it to go somewhere else. A well maintained but seemingly abandoned spider web is very rare. Unless it got ate by something else recently.

Hey exit, get some women nylons, knee high, for friction reduction in your boots. They really do work and have an additional wicking effect.

I once worked in the gulf as a pipe fitter/welder. Worn under long johns, with a little trimmimg,

they really cut the cold as well.
