Yeah that makes sense. Now i have a range to master.Back to the range. How much ammo should i have?It is a small gun.Where is the cheapest place to buy ammo?can you buy ammo online through the mail?

Lam,

you can buy ammo through the mail. There are a lot of sites that would work - Nachez, Cheaper than Dirt, Cabela's, I'm sure others will add more.

How much you have is an all depends. I'd have at least a couple of boxes (40 to 50 rounds) of your everyday carry ammo. It'll probably be some type of hollow point (I like Hornady's Critical Defense but that is me) and will be fairly expensive. Then I'd have 500 rounds, at least, of target/practice ammo. This is variously called FMJ (full metal jacket) or ball (same thing, different name) and can be bought in bulk. Some companies make reloads for bulk sales and that is fine for your practice ammo. This stuff will work as a self defense load "in extremis" but I'd never plan for it to be that way. Lots of explanations as to why on other threads but basically it is to prevent over penetration and legal issues.

The ammo depends on how much you're comfortable with. I'd build up slowly, buy your first few boxes locally and then bulk order what you can, when you can. I like 1000 rounds of FMJ for my pistols and a reorder at 750 but I don't really think that there will be much handgun use in TSHTF scenario. Most is practice ammo. I suggest the Survival Cache Survival Psychology series, especially

http://survivalcache.com/survival-psychology-deadly-force/ and

http://survivalcache.com/survival-psychology-aftermath-self-defense-shooting/

If you have been fortunate enough to have never taken a human life up close, it is something you should read and think about. I hope this helps.

My 2 cents- I couldn't hit anything with an LCP. It's great as a concealable, easy to carry pistol. It wouldn't be the pistol I'd want to have at home if I had the option of something larger, when I'm bugging in.

In fact I'd much rather have a rifle, for that matter.

I have some NAA .22 revolvers, some of the smallest available, for convenience(fit in a pocket without printing)

I have a Phoenix HP22 for my car. Small, easily concealable in my maxpedition knock off shoulder bag, and lightweight ammo. Fun to shoot, too.

I have a ruger SR9C that I love shooting, that I could easily throw in my BOB or keep in a legal and locked box in my car if I decided to.

I have a Springfield XD9 with a 4" barrel that would carry something like 16 rounds if I lived in a state where standard(hi cap in california terms) mags were legal. If I went hunting and wanted something to carry on the belt or a gun to put in the bedside table, this would be the one. Big but not too big, enough capacity, rugged , but small enough so that it's not unwieldy and could be concealed if push came to shove.

I like the smaller guns, and the LCP seemed very functional for emergency or ocassional use. I just wouldn't shoot one for pleasure because it hurt to shoot. I'm sure its a fine weapon.

That's my breakdown, different guns for different scenarios.

2 is one and one is none and all that.

That said if you want one gun to do it all you could do a lot worse than an LCP.

My Kel Tec P11 is no fun to shoot. It recoils more than I like, is hard to aim and has a stiff trigger. That said it is almost never not in my pocket! Rule number 1 of the rules for a gun fight is to have a gun! I shoot it for practice; I shoot my SAA because it is fun to shoot and I enjoy myself.

OK, I'm going to disagree with socal just a bit; I prefer a shotgun as the long gun of choice for over penetration issues (I don't want to endanger someone at the end of the block because I went through the perp, the wall and kept on going) but in this case a 5.56 or a .30 carbine is a nice compromise. Plenty of punch up close and a limited over penetration problem.

A hand gun is NEVER the best gun for a fight. There is ALWAYS a better weapon except that you don't have it with you. Was it Cooper who said "your handgun is to fight your way back to where you left your rifle"? I basically agree. If I knew I was going to be in a gun fight, I'd be someplace, almost ANY place, else. That as a given, there's a reason the military issues carbines and rifles instead of handguns. If you are issued a handgun it is only because your MOS keeps you from having a rifle.

If I could have ONLY one gun, it would likely be a shotgun. If two, a shotgun and a .22LR. A third adds a carbine or rifle in .30 caliber something. The fourth would be a handgun. The handgun's strength is conceal-ability and carry-ability. It is the weapon I'll have when TSHTF away from home. Just make sure the caliber is large enough to deal with the threat (Grizzly bears are not impressed with 9mm). It is your up close and personal, I never should have put my rifle down, NOW what am I going to do plan Y. Plan Z is my knife but you NEVER get out of a knife fight without bleeding yourself, even if you live. If you've pulled that handgun, you are in real trouble and it is your last line of effective defense.

OK, I may have misunderstood. In most of our conversations, your EDC is what is in your pockets, all the time on you. A fanny pack could also be part of your EDC. A BOB is usually a backpack (doesn't have to be - could be any bag) that contains about 3 days worth of stuff to let you walk out of a situation. My vehicle has more stuff to supplement my BOB. Each one presumes the ones below it but each one increases the time it gives you.

Sorry if I confused things.

Lam,

We have a solar charger and it does work well. A note of caution. Ours will charge up a phone overnight using its internal battery. The catch is it then takes quite a whild to recharge that internal battery, especially if bright sunshine isn't available.

After trying to charge the phone/kindle (we've used ours for both) time how long it takes to fully recharge itself. That will be a good to know piece of intel for the future.

Now you may disagree with what I'm about to say, but my thoughts on using a knife is to use it in ambush. Once the grapple is engaged in you produce the blade. This allows you to close with and entangle without tripping the "Oh crap it's a sharp object" circuit in the soon to be cold cuts brain until the very moment when you will be able to use it to its most lethal and devastating effect (abdominal aorta anyone?).

What I'm saying is don't make it a "knife fight" make it a "knife-ing". I know a lot of folks fancy themselves to be knife fighters, but having any intention of using a sharp object in self defense as if you were dueling is silly and likely to get you killed. Even if the soon to be cold cut has a blade of his own hold it in until you're in the best position to employ it.

Trap

Entangle

Deanimate

Results speak for themselves and this simple method produces results. Just my thoughts on the matter.

At the risk of hijacking the thread, I'd like to offer my opinions on using a knife for self defense. I have been, and continue to, train on a weekly basis for knife and stick fighting (PTK, as mentioned in another thread). I have also survived two real world knife attacks, one before I started training, and one after.

In the first I was stabbed by surprise from behind, and left for dead on a train platform. The knife had a blade just under 2 inches long, and I was stabbed just once above my left kidney. The pain was so bad, and such a shock, that I literally couldn't do anything but collapse and spasm like I had been hit with a stun gun. I did not bleed badly (externally), but the doctors told me the wound would have killed me if it had been an inch farther down and left, or three inches farther right. It took just over a month for the wound to heal, and I couldn't lift/twist/carry anything heavy for fear of reopening the wound. The man who stabbed me did so for a pack of Marlboro cigarettes, and my Bic lighter. He didn't even touch my wallet, and he ran off as soon as he had the smokes. People on the other train platform witnessed the attack and came running to help me, so I did not have to wait for medical attention. Until I saw the photos from the hospital, I was convinced that someone had run me through with a bayonet, it hurt that bad.

As Vicioustom suggests, the 'shanking' or surprise stabbing is the most common method of knife attack. If the target doesn't expect it, he doesn't move away or try to counter it. Even if the other guy is a trained fighter, a surprise attack gives you the best (perhaps only) chance to strike a telling blow.

In the second attack, I was attacked on my bicycle by a group of young men who wanted my bike and my gear. They watched me approach, then ran out into the street to knock me off the bike. I saw them make the move and steered into them, causing us all to pile up in a heap. I used my U-lock on the nearest one as I was getting up, and grabbed my bike with the other hand. The rest of the group split into a pair of guys standing back and shouting at me, while the other pair tried to grab the bike and tackle me. I beat the tackler down with the U-lock, then the guy wrestling for the bike pulled a knife out and let go of the bike. I let go of the bike too, and backed up. I got my knife out but had trouble opening it with my cycling gloves on. The two guys shouting took off when they saw the knives come out, leaving me with just one to deal with. He had the 'knife fighter's crouch' thing going on, left hand extended towards me with spread fingers and the knife in his right. Once I got my knife open, I changed my stance and circled towards my bike (where my cell phone and pepper spray are). When he moved to get between me and the bike, I changed my angle and lopped off the tips of his longest finger and forefinger. He yanked his hand back with a yell, then dropped his knife to grab the bleeding hand. I hit him with the Ulock at that point and he went down. I ended up using the smallest bungee cord off my bike pack to stop the bleeding from his fingers, until the cops arrived. (There were legal hassles as a result of this fight - I was sued for medical expenses, and threatened with assault charges for using the Ulock the last time. In the end, I avoided being charged and the lawsuit was dropped.)

If you do not know what you are doing with a knife (you have not trained to fight with one) then I agree you are surely going to get cut. If you seriously intend to use your blade for self defense, you need to get some training in how to use it. It does not require any physical strength to kill someone with a blade, only timing and precision - a razor sharp knife can kill with a very gentle stroke, and any blade 2 inches long or more can reach vitals in a single thrust. Get some training if you carry a blade for self defense. It makes a difference when you go to court, too.

The bicycle attack was here in the Bay area a couple of years ago; the train station attack was while I was in Germany, back in the 80s. I've changed my route a little, to avoid most places that can channel me close to pedestrians standing around. If you live down in Miami area, there are some very good trainers there.

IF your only planning on 24 hours you could get away with one mre in your bag Lam, by eating different parts of it you can make them last for quite a while. I keep three in mine and could make them last a day each most likely. I also keep 2 gallons of water in my truck. My GHB has a change of clothes, 3 mres, roap, kbar knife, 50 rounds of 40 cal ammo, extra mag for my EDC pistol, city map and state map, compass, signal mirror and water bottle. its not alot but im usually within 5 miles of home so I feel it is more than sufficient. I also keep a fairly well equiped med kit in my truck. Dont buy the premade ones they suck and usually are very lacking.

LMAO...actually, that hadn't occurred to me when I picked the name, but I guess it fits too. I have been hit by cars (on my bicycle) 3 times in the past five years. All hit and runs, BTW. The last one (June of last year) nearly killed me. I had a TBI, lost a lot of my memory and continue to have ongoing short term memory issues (though it is getting a little better). I rarely commute to work by bike anymore, my wife completely freaks out if I suggest it. I still ride on the weekends and for fun with the wife, but not six days a week like I used to. We've agreed that I can ride in to work, but she comes to pick me up in the truck when I ride in - all of the accidents have been in the afternoon/evening.

Incidentally, the last accident, I was straddling my bike on a sidewalk, waiting to cross the street, when the guy came out of the bank and turned right (while looking left and talking on his cell phone). He drove up over the curb with his SUV and thats how I got hit/dragged. It has been a long standing family joke that all we (the males in my family) are known for is 'being stubborn and hard to kill'. Since I'm also 'the survivalist in the family', the email handle came naturally.

In all seriousness, cycling in Florida (and in Hillsborough county especially) is dangerous as hell. In 2010-2011, Tampa was listed as the second most dangerous place on Earth to bicycle, after Bangkok Thailand. We've slipped to 4th now, I think, because we've only killed 7 cyclists last year, versus 13 the year before. Only killed 1 so far in 2012, and its mid march so thats a good average. Without preaching to any other cyclists out there, I will just say this: my helmet saved my life, without question.

My helmet saved me also when I got clipped on my last motorcycle. Even with all my protective gear I was nearly killed. It's not preaching bro, it's fact.

And Lam, for 24 hours you don't need much food to be completely honest. Just toss a fistful of Cliff Bars in your bag, and maybe some kind of salted seed.

I agree with Tom. CLIF bars would be a good choice. They are specifically designed NOT to melt or go bad in warm weather (they are a cycling staple, really). You can buy them in Walmart, most convenience stores and every bicycle shop. There's about ten different flavors, most in some combination of chocolate/peanut butter/berry. You can get them for about 2 bucks apiece, if I recall the price correctly. Toss a few of these in your bag and you are good to go. Every couple of weeks, eat the ones you have in the bag, buy a new set.

survivalcyclist,

You've got some crazy stories man! Where is a good place to train to knife fight in Miami? I'm not sure if they train how to use a knife in Krav Maga, but I was thinking of taking some Krav Maga in a couple months. I really want to take some self-defense classes for getting in shape and for those "what if" type scenarios. I've never been attacked but I've been in some shady places, downtown Miami in particular is not the safest of places (certain parts).

Cliff bars and power bar type things will work too, I may havta pick up one to try. As for recomending an MRE my fav is the chili mac. put the cheese packet in the heater too and you can add melted cheese to it. only problem is i may give myself away with my flatuence. I like to stick to the ones that are good cold, chicken tetrazini, spagetti etc.

Take a look at the Miami Arnis Group, under Tony Torre. You can find his website at www.miamiarnisgroup.com I've only met him briefly at a seminar, but he is well regarded by my instructor (Dino Martinez) and the rest of our Florida PTK group.
