When you think you have enough water get some more, and when you think you have enough again triple that and keep getting more! Especially for you being around salt water it will be very important to have a reliable source of freshwater. I am in the midwest and my plan is for a gallon per person per day, of course that is in mild condtions without doing much work but I am probably over estimating ( which is usually good) Food 1200 calories minumum per day but again that is without having to do much work. MREs are good but really they are not meant to be eaten for more than a month straight ( at least that is what I hear and have been checking into that) I would keep a variety of food items ( with a variety of prepping methods just to cover your bases, mres, hiking pouches, canned goods, and such.) It would also be to your advantage to learn how to make simple distilation aparatues like a solar still or even easier and cheaper is using a teapot with and adaptation to the spout for collecting purposes. My only comment on the crossbow is my very limited experiance with them is that they have a slower and much harder reloading time over a regular bow. It takes a lot of strength to recock a cross bow over using a simple or compound bow, but like I said very limited experiance.

If you have a garage

a 2500 watt honda ER generator run AC during the night and refrigerator freezer and fans during the day

4 - 5 gallon gas cans and sea foam gas stabilizer 3 cans 2 for the 4 cans of gas and a backup

an inexpensive 5,000 BTU or less air conditioner for your office 12 x12 no problem

a battery charger and LED PUCK lights take 3 AAA batteries about 6 of them

electrical cord a Yellow jacket heavy cord carries more amps 2 - 25 footers

bury an anchor near your window so you can lock your generator with a heavy cable lock...

a couple of three way plugs {multiple plugs into one cord} dollar stores have them

a box fan maybe 2.

get a reinforced metal door for your office and a floor mounted door stop if you have to barricade

yourself you can have more meat between you and whatever {buy from habitat for humanity store}.

chemical Ice packs squeeze and you got cold refreshment as anxiety and injury in heat make it

more difficult put in a face towel and breath through it it is almost as good as AC....

3/4 inch ply wood pre fitted to your windows especially your bedroom and drill some holes 1 inch

or larger so your not blind to your exterior and cut for your AC so when time comes you already have it.

pre drilled and fitted with screws stapled to each one so not chasing little items.

more ammo and some more and keep it in military ammo cans if you get flooded it will not get wet.

wise prepackaged meals in a bucket as much as you think you need 1 month minimum

they have breakfast lunch and dinners and all you need is hot water.

water 2 blue drums look for them as you travel around many are used for soap or food grade

additives I think you will need 2 - 60 gallon each and a ball check siphon wal mart and

truck stops have them to get water out and siphon into a smaller container wash the barrels

and treat water as described in many threads and close plugs tight a barrel wrench

can be had from www.beprepared,com

it is a bit of a pain but you can make a better "SAFE ROOM" by lining the walls with 1/2 inch plywood

and screwing it down well and you can do the attic over it as well re install the door frame needs a

wider frame board and replace the trim and you can paint it as usual it binds the wall studs so they

flex less and if it is in the corner of your house the better.

a room in a house can be entered through the sheet rock wall as easy as opening a door

and flying debris can enter just as easy and this increases the strength of the room extensively

for protection from intruders and storms sheet rock is worthless.

my home has one wall with sheet rock an interior wall the rest is 1/2 inch plywood and no one can tell

it was tapped and floated and textured like sheet rock and painted quick as humidity can cause the

texture to release but after painting no problem 6 years and it still looks fine..

I have re built homes damaged in storms or accidents and most do not have insulation in the

interior walls if this is your bug in / safe room / last ditch storm shelter I would make sure

it makes emergency AC more efficient and cuts exterior sounds and adds that extra layer of protecton

just make sure you have a fire axe or a sledge hammer to beat out the window in case of an emergency..

cross bows are a pain and slow to load better to get a shot gun IMO

and the price of a good bow is not cheap nor are arrows etc

and time does not make them more valuable as guns

if your recoil shy a dead mule kick reducer and a 20 gauge instead

of a 12 and the shot gun need to have the short barrel as a long

barrel is difficult to use in a house or car.

Even after wilma we lost our power for two weeks now i heard the cell towers have generators.tAm i thinking right?

Lam,

IIRC Wilma hit Florida as a Cat 3 or Cat 2 storm. While getting through Wilma OK was a good think, do not make the mistake of thinking if you survived Wilma you could survive a Cat 5 storm. Depending on where you are, bugging in may simply NOT be possible. I've grown up on the Texas coast and I've seen several Cat 4 and a Cat 5; Cat 3 storms are beasts but a Cat 5 is a freaking monster that puts Godzilla to shame. Never plan on gambling with a Cat 4 or 5 storm. You're playing 'you bet your life' with Mother Nature and she is not always a lady.

I'd recommend not getting a trigger job on the Ruger. One is for legal reasons, have the trigger worked on and a 'crusading' DA will make it out like you were reckless or intended to kill someone. When you're on adrenalin you won't notice that trigger. The other thing is that it sometimes takes 100 to 200 rounds for a trigger to smooth out. If you haven't shot it that much, be patient. If you wish (I recommend this) get some snap caps http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=snap+caps&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=4093307875&ref=pd_sl_28gyv3gsda_e to practice loading, drawing, presenting, firing, and clearing drills. There are explanations on this in the gun sites.

I'm a fan of Rugers but if you're not happy, look at something else that might fit you better. Find a gun store that will rent firearms to you and find one to fit your hand. I have one of the solar recharging units from Amazon and it works very well for phones and kindles. The cell towers will have generators (some of them, depends on where) assuming they aren't damaged by a storm. Land lines might actually work before cells so try both.

I don't duplicate my EDC in my BOB or GHB (Get Home Bag). My EDC is the stuff that I think as a bare minimum will let me survive a TSHTF event. Fire, blade, navigation, some first aid, communications are close to it. Firearm if it is legal where I am. My BOB builds on that. Add water, food, spare clothes, signalling devices, rope, shelter, space blanket etc. My EDC keeps me alive for 24 to 36 hours in order to get to my BOB. My BOB extends that to 3 to 5 days. Since I ALWAYS have my EDC, my BOB can build on that rather than duplicate it.

Thank you Capt Bart i may need to read your reply many times to fully comprehand your points.

My local gun shop says the trigger cannot be modified to shoot faster.Iam dissapointed i thought gunsmiths do this kind of work.Oh well

Should i start to build my edc first or my bob first?

Can you provide some TSHTF events I might encounter in my area?

Also the thing im worried about most and want to plan for is hyperinflation and storm events.

Lam,

gun shops can do trigger jobs but some guns do not lend themselves to the work. I know someone who has a Taurus that the gunsmith said trying to work on the trigger was extremely difficult due to design. He didn't want to try for fear of ruining the trigger and the part was no longer available.

Your EDC exists - it is what is in your pockets at all times. The only question is, how complete is the kit? I would make sure it includes a blade (I usually carry 3 or 4), a fire starter (I have multiple), I would really encourage a multitool (I have Leatherman, others like Gerber, and I have 2), I like a rescue whistle (mine cost a couple of bucks-has a magnifying glass, compass and small mirror). That is a solid EDC. One of my knifes is a Swiss Army (the can opener is the most used - I also have two other openers (P38 and P51) on me).

Remember, 2 is 1, 1 is none. Also, your EDC is what you ALWAYS have with you. That is what you will have if TSHTF is so fast, all you can do is run, not even time to pick up the BOB. Add enough stuff to let you get by for 24 hours. Remember the EDC is designed to keep you alive until you can get to your BOB or to let you build the things you need if you can't get to the BOB.

Every other kit assumes you have your EDC on you. I'd get it up to speed as a first priority but I also wouldn't delay starting on my BOB; that is your 72 hour kit. It usually adds water, food, shelter etc. to the EDC.

Just my not so humble opinion.

thanks regulator. back to wally world i go.

Reg5 is correct. I got mine at Academy but they are pretty generic. The trick is the whistle will make a lot of noise long after you've lost your voice due to injury or gone hoarse from yelling for help. If you're breathing, the whistle can make noise.

The other stuff is backup for other things (likely in the BOB; like a solid compass) while still providing a primary rescue aid with the whistle.

My EDC is the stuff that is physically on me at the moment. I'm at work so I can't have a firearm at the moment. On my person I have my whistle, 4 knives, 3 can openers, a Leatherman and a mini-leatherman, 6 ways to make fire (2 BICs, 1 small book of matches, 1 Zippo, a magnesium block & fire steel, the magnifying glass in the whistle), cash, 2 handkerchiefs, a sharpening tool, a bright, green laser pointer dental floss and my cane which has a 36 inch hard wood shaft and a mace head (folks thing it looks 'fashionable' with no idea it has other, less PC uses). In my computer bag that goes with me I have a first aid kit, large magnifying glass, binoculars, calculator (solar powered), emergency food (24 hours), pigging strips (leather strips, 8 to 10 inches long for securing stuff), my kindle and computer.

My BOB is in my truck down one flight of stairs. Remember, that hour to get home gets much longer after TSHTF. If one of last week's tornadoes went between you and home I suspect your travel time would be MUCH longer than 1 hour. Especially if you're walking it, it could easily be 3 days. We almost always underestimate travel time, even if we are trying to be conservative. I advise as a rule of thumb for most things, take your best guess double it and add 10%. For travel time, I look to history. In the late 1800's wagon trains considered 10 miles a day an extremely good day, 5 miles a day wasn't bad. Some days a few hundred yards was all they got. Often enough they camped within sight of last night's camp site. Stories of guys riding back to town on day 5 or 7 for something needed are not uncommon because they were only 5 to 10 miles from town. My point is, don't figure your travel time based on what you normally do. Look at the distance, figure 5 miles a day and calculate the time. Then take that time, double it and add 10%. I live about 4 miles from work and I figure 2 days to get home. If everything is stable, great. If not I'll be rerouting, avoiding groups, and trying to make sure I don't get lost or mugged. You'd be surprised how unfamiliar your town is without street signs or land marks. Do you know the compass direction to your house from work? Are there landmarks? I have a railroad track I can get too, turn west and follow that until I'm close. I have a major airfield close. If I get that far I've passed the house. These are landmarks that most probably will survive anything but they double the walking distance. Now it's 4 days. I'm ready for that in my BOB.

Murphy was a bloody optimist after all.

Hey Lam,

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I'd like to throw a quick comment in on your pistol trigger. If it's a fighting pistol having a heavier trigger will work to your advantage (and let's be honest, that little Ruger isn't made for hunting or competitive target shooting). Once your adrenaline kicks in that 25lb trigger with the mile long pull becomes a half pound trigger with a 16th of an inch pull. It will help you control your shots when your amped, although they are annoying when your target shooting admittedly.

Hi Lam,

I live in Tampa, and my prepping is aimed at 'Survive a Five'. That means a Category 5 hurricane and/or five weeks of no power/water/government help. I've prioritized my plans, starting with the most important things first, then working downward to the little things that aren't as important. Because of our circumstances, my wife and I will be staying here unless we are absolutely forced to evacuate. That means having an evacuation plan (and a means to evacuate) in addition to our main goal of sheltering in place.

To me, the priority for planning goes like this:

Shelter, water, food, health, security, morale, legal.

Without adequate shelter, nothing else you plan or prepare for will matter at all. All the water, food, guns and gear will not mean a thing if your home is torn apart by high winds, or storm surge pushes 22 feet of water through your neighborhood. So this is my first priority, making sure my residence is not in a flood zone, and its tough enough to handle the winds. After that, a supply of water, and a means to gather more. Then food and a means to cook it, and nutritional supplements. Then a safe way to dispose of the garbage and sewage we create (gotta use the bathroom sooner or later, unlike movie heroes). Then weapons and other security items. Then things to pass the time and keep our spirits up, including communications. Finally, all of the legal and financial matters that will become important after a hurricane - insurance, ID, and so forth.

While I work on these things, I also make sure our vehicle is in tip top shape and ready to go if we need it.

I really dont know what to do with it.But it is a weapon.I dont have a concelled weapon permit to carry it.Im wondering if i should get one and keep it in my car or house.

You know, having a CC doesn't mean you must carry, it just gives you the option. So having the CCWP just gives you more flexibility in what you can legally do to protect yourself/your family depending on the current risks present in your area.

As for what to do with it, go shoot it until you can comfortably put bullets into a torso sized target at about ten meter (I would think with that particular pistol being able to put all of your rounds on the inside of the 4 ring on e-type silhouette would be acceptable). Then take it out and shoot it every six months or so, will keep you from forgetting how to use it.
