Day Hike Pack question...

Recommended Posts

thanks for the tip! i will check it out!

I asked a buddy of mine who does a lot of work with the BSA about a simple lightweight land navigation system you could access on line to learn the basics of compass and map use. Most of my training was hands on father/grandfather to son/grandson or military so it was bit out out of my toolbox.

He suggested this http://landnavigation.org/default.aspx

I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, let me know if it works for you.

take a 1 dollar key chain laser and point it at an aircraft cabin they will find you.

have an extra set of keys with your vehicle nothing worse than making it back and have to

sleep next to it or wait for a locksmith or a tow truck because you lost your keys.

Careful with the laser. It is a federal offense to point a laser at an aircraft. It can cause crew disorientation, it has been tried by terrorist and the guys that find you might be the FBI! Having said that, as long as they find you. Even the 1mW lasers can cause disorientation. I carry one for several reasons, not the least of which is that it can be used to indicate my position at night. A green laser pointed straight up can be seen for a surprisingly long distance at night.

A CD makes an excellent emergency mirror for signaling. Make a V with two fingers of one hand, look through the hole in the CD and sight your target through the V. Then move the CD until the reflected sun moves up and down your fingers. That will flash the target you've placed in the V. Best way I know of to make sure you're actually flashing your target and not the next valley over!

Aluminum is great for cooking, signaling, building reflectors to send heat into a tent from a fire, use as a reflector to keep heat in or out (basic homemade space blanket or sun screen), radio antenna, Faraday cage, and of course the primary purpose IS the foil hat with a paperclip change to ground to bleed off the attempts by the government to control your mind using alien technology the keep hidden in Groom Lake.

Never trust ANYONE without a properly grounded foil hat; you never know if they are being controlled!

Hmm, the c.d. signaling mirror will be a good way to use up these 4,000 a.o.l. internet disks i've been saving.

so this faraday cage you speak of, how would that work with the tin foil? don't worry, i'm wearing my hat right now, you can trust me...

well, i just made my first purchase thanks to all of your recommendations. please consider the fact that i'm working on a budget here. i have some stuff already prepared first aide wise. when i put my full first aide kit together i will post it and let everyone tear it up and tell me how i'm going to die a slow horrible death because i of course forgot the most important thing. :P

please feel free to tell me if i got anything ridiculous. i included pictures of the items...

my biggest hesitancy was getting the gerber bear ultimate knife, but for the money i couldn't find anything comparable. i watched some good reviews for the revised knife, not the original where the end would break off. i'm not going to build a log cabin out there with it, so hopefully it will do me good. i don't love bear, but i don't hate him either. all that i know is, buying an endorsed product doesn't make you smarter or faster. i couldn't dunk even if i wore air jordans.

thanks for your help everyone! you gave me some great ideas! keep em' coming if you got em!

good finds. thanks!

can anyone tell me why you would bring heavy duty aluminum foil, other than cooking?

-can be used as a wind screen when making fire or wind screen on your stove.

-signaling device

-solar heating a water bottle

-reflect heat

-make a cup
