Hey y'all! One thing I've noticed, or haven't noticed rather, is that there is no article on soap-making... references sure, namely in the "Looking To Our Past" series, but no true in-depth articles. Given the simplicity of soap-making, and its inherent value in a post-SHTF/TEOTWAWKI scenario, I personally think this would be a great article to have. If there's one thing I can tell you after working for a couple years in a boutique-quality soap factory while in high school, it's how simple it is to produce an extremely high-quality "gourmet" bar of soap with very little effort exerted. All it takes is a little know-how, a well-constructed soap rack and a decent recipe, and you're in business. What do y'all think?

    Preparing to... Clean?

In another thread, the discussion touched on how basic hygiene and keeping your BOL clean can be essential during a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI scenario. Why? * Bacteria and, well, filth leads to toxins spreading and possible infection * Hand, surface, and air sanitizers will be in short supply or unavailable * Antibiotics will not be available, and other treatments for infection are not as effective * Serious illness (such as cholera) frequently crops up in unsanitary conditions post-disaster and can not only be deadly, but can quickly spread So... Are you prepared to be clean? Does your BOB contain items that will help you handle unsanitary conditions you may encounter as you make your way to your BOL? Are you toting a shaving kit and some body gel with you? Do you have cleaning tools (rags, sponges, mops, brooms, etc.) mixed in with other survival implements? Will your cooking set-up allow you to prepare meat and veggies without worry of cross-contamination? Do you have a 10-year supply of Lysol or have you set in extra stores of vinegar, baking soda, and other pantry items that can be used for cleaning and disinfecting your BOL shelter? Here's a good overview of personal hygiene needs in a survival situation: Instructions on making soap: Creating basic cleaning supplies from pantry items: What are your tips for keeping yourself clean - and therefore healthy - when a daily shower and freshly laundered clothes may not be possible? What are you gathering to ensure that your BOL remains sanitary?
