P210SIG, that's why they make Cerakote! My wife and I have decided that we're heading to Alaska for her 40th birthday in two years. I'm thinking a Glock 20 may reside on my hip. That or my 4" Mag-Na-Ported S&W 629.

    AR renovation time...

So I've had this AR15A2 Colt Match Sporter HBAR for years, and I never shoot it because it has a 1:7 twist and I usually run 55-62 grain bullets - the fast twist over stabilizes and the rifle groups horribly as a consequence. However, I've been putting some thought into a KISS rifle - no gadgets, just simple, light weight. (my SHTF AR weighs 9 1/2+ pounds at full loadout with a 30 round mag! So a nice, lightweight AR with fixed sights is on the menu, and this Colt is the foundation. Going with a 16" lightweight 1:9 twist "Dissipator" barrel setup from Windham Weaponry, keeping the fixed rear "carrying handle" rear sight setup. Parts have been ordered from a local shop. I swapped out the fixed stock to a 6-position telescoping receiver extension with Magpul MOE stock last night.

    AR renovation time...

Here's the finished product. I love everything about it. Kept it simple and clean, functional. Article on the build went live today, check it out here: http://survivalcache.com/back-to-basics-the-kiss-ar-15-keep-it-simple-stupid-survival/

    new armor?

Interesting. They didn;t really get into specifics much...and I don't see how a metal foam can reduce an AP .30-06 projectile to "powder". Maybe the bullet was past its expiration date.
  9. Just bought a couple of these Nite Ize kits to fix up a couple ailing AA powered Mini-Maglites I've had since I was a kid. Other than making a flashlight susceptible to EMP, I don't see anything but benefits. Any of you guys tried 'em? http://www.niteize.com/product/LED-Combo-Upgrade-Kit-II.asp

    Mini-Maglite LED conversion

Hell, you can get new Mini Maglites at Wal Mart for like 14 bucks. Nite Ize also makes conversion kits for the big 2-5 D cell maglites too. So when you have to bludgeon an elk to death with one, you can rest assured your old-school krypton bulb won't break.

I'm a fan of the 10/22 Takedown myself! I'm buying a Marlin 70SS Papoose this weekend for a nice comparison!

    Mini-Maglite LED conversion

Got the Nite Ize kits Mini-Maglite installed - they're not bad. They come with a push-button tailcap which seems to work well, but they also pleasingly work with the original tailcaps so you can stand them upright and illuminate a room, which is a nice feature when the power goes out. The projected light doesn't seem much brighter - it's a whitish-blue beam as opposed to the original krypton bulb's yellow beam. The beam is focusable, just the same as the original bulb. I think it's a solid investment for the $11 or $12 each they cost off Amazon - the 50,000-hour-rated LEDs will sip power from the batteries compared to the original krypton bulbs, so the units will pay for themselves in battery savings alone.

    EDC illumination?

Hah! Nice catch! I have edited my post. You are correct, it's a Surefire Titan. I didn;t get the 300 lumen bigger Titan Plus, I bought the $50 125-lumen standard Titan. it's still quote bright, but I don't like the bezel twist on/off activation feature. https://www.amazon.com/SureFire-Titan-Ultra-Compact-Dual-Output-Keychain/dp/B00SX7KKEI

    EDC illumination?

What do you all carry for EDC illumination? I need to replace my stalwart Streamlight Microstream. Before I ran out and got another (which I'm perfectly fine with) I thought I'd test the waters of other manufacturers. I don't like the bigger CR123-running tactical flashlights; they're too big to stuff in a jeans pocket and not be obtrusive; I'll beep it to AA or (preferably) AAA powered. Thoughts? Recommendations? Aaaaaaannnnnd...GO!

Price / sticker shock at the grocery store.

The medications for my wife's epilepsy have gone retarded - they used to be $48 for a three month's supply three years ago. We just picked up the latest refill, $182. Freaking ridiculous. Last night I stopped to buy stuff to make three pizzas at home (we had a hell of a snowstorm going), a six pack of frosty adult beverages, some seltzer water, dishwasher detergent, and two cans of baked beans for the pantry (I always buy at least two cans of some sort of food when I go to the grocery store to build up the preps) and a box of cookie mix - 96 dollars. I was bullshit.

Excellent, thank you! They were cheap enough, so even if they're terrible, I'm not out too much dough.

Hah! Nope, just borrowed from family! The P220 SAO (Single Action Only) is mine, the Browning Hi Power Practical is my father's, and the Series 70 1911 is my brother's. My first "real" semi-auto pistol was a S&W 39, but I quickly graduated to a 1911 and loved to carry it in a SOB holster cocked and locked. But then I discovered Sig P220s and I pretty much forgot about 1911s.

    EDC illumination?

Butler Ford, You hit the nail on the head. I ordered a Fenix LD02 and a Surefire Titan, but I still like the Microstream best. I like the simple on/off tailcap controls - no multiple levels of brightness and tailcap tapping or adjusting. Kinda stupid for a 3" long friggin' flashlight.

What have you done today to better your Prep? III

Snake, actually, I've consolidated my powder selections quite a bit. IMR-4064 for .30-06, .270 and .308, IMR-4198 for .222, Benchmark for .223, IMR-3031 for .356 and .35 Remington. Bullseye for 9mm and .45ACP. I have a few other powders kicking around for load development purposes, in case I want to work up a load for a new toy. I had some issues with the .45 Square Deal B, but Dillon's customer service is unreal. I emailed them saying I had a part that had broken from wear and I would be glad to buy a new one, and before I even had time to think they weren't going to reply to me, I had a new part at my door. RCBS is the same way. I like progressives if I just want to make a bunch of blasting/practice ammo, but if I'm going to a shooting match I'll weigh individual bullets, throw and weigh every powder charge manually, and single stage everything. It definitely makes a difference.
