  1. Not sure what the argument is. Or if there even is one? Yeah I know what the differences between a fresnel lense parabolic mirror and sun oven are. I kind of am the one who mentioned them. Sun oven isnt a parabolic mirror. But in the grand scheme of things they all do the same thing as focus more sunlight in 1 given area. My questioning of which to choose was practicality in a shtf situation. Just as which is better spend all day fishing to catch 5 fish per day or build a fish trap that automatically catches 5 fish per day for you. In this scenario use a huge fresnel lense (one big enough to boil water definately costs more than a buck ) so spend all day turning lense and focusing it and refilling boiler and cleaning out salt and hoping lense doesn't rip a hole in boiler. Or make a huge (siZe of a house) solar still. It's just a huge piece of clear plastic with run off for evaporated water maybe over a tidal pool that way it's automatic and does all the work for me. My goal is to have as much automated processes as possible. I want my wave or wind powered generator to run the ice chest to get me a glass of ice to put in my cup of desalinated water go pick a lemon off lemon tree to squirt on the fish my fish trap caught throw in my sun oven and surf while I'm waiting on my dinner to finish cooking
  2. z0vis and oregon... i guess its an opinionated thing and just as opinionated as the location you think would be best suited to help you survive in the case of shtf or total collapse for a long extended time.... some people may chose mountain, desert, but for my concerns if there is a total collapse i am relocated to a small island in the bahamas... ive tried to think of every issue that there is... and one of these islands seems to fit the bill... doubt the ocean would ever run out of food... safety would be improved as most of these small cays (smaller island) are surrounded in sharp corals and only 3-5 feet deep way off the banks so larger ships cannot get close to the bank... so if was an attacking force theyd either have to swim through shark infested waters or be in small boats... either way the terrain makes attack more difficult... and i think that for my situation holding down one of these small islands with 100 or so people would be very difficult for someone to take over however with everything there are drawbacks ...mine is water/ desalination of saltwater.. food would be plentiful...safety in numbers plus the general location makes it difficult hence why the pirates holed up on these islands and naval fleets from spain and england had very difficult times overtaking them.. but i cant seem to figure out the best way to supply desalinated water to 100 people... cant decide between big fresnel lens boil/destill or huge huge solar still clear plastic tent thing over tidal pool

    $50 for prepping

im not sure what the question is...but if its what gets the most bang for your buck as far as prepping / survival...for 50 bux id have to say very good knife and sharpening stone, couple bottles of rubbing alcohol, metal canteen, flint/striker spool of 100lb test line hooks and a huge bag of rice... with that your knife could make a series of tools or weapons make a fish trap cut up pop cans to make alcohol stove alcohol serves purposes for antiseptic as well as alcohol stove 100lb test line you can use for fishing or small game snares..50 bux if spent well can keep you hydrated fed and safe for a good while

So we think we are prepared?

lol@ me sorry substitute LEAD for silver if you dont want lead poisoning and silver fights infection lol 130am posting = not good idea

So we think we are prepared?

dental is fairly easy to handle.. you will need lead a needle and some very small sort of drilling device,,,, preventive maintenance is the best..in a shtf situation you will want to take care of cavities quickly before they get into the pulp... use some creativity and thought on your part to think of a way to drill out the decayed part without going too deep and put lead on top of it... if your tooth is abcessed its more difficult and more painful...i know this because i have had a root canal without anesthesia and it was EXTREMELY painful and took 4 hours but yes it is possible.. a root canal is nothing more than drilling through the cap of the tooth then gutting your tooth out down to the roots... it will cause A LOT of pain once the air hits the open nerve for the first time.. and whoever the person is doing this will need a lot of time because you will only be able to manage one "stab" of the needle into the nerve before a min or so of rest each time ..each stab will kill a portion of the nerve but the patient will jump in pain each time but little by little the nerve will die but its a long process as first you will have to kill the pulp then the nerve all the way down into the prong of the tooth and time will need to be taken as to not put the person in shock... i was sweating profusely and shaking all over ..its a pretty rudimentary system really if you think about all the years a dentist has to go to school just to gut out a tooth....the tools to do a root canal look like nothing more than a small pipe cleaner and all they do is scrape out all the nerves... fill it full of something to kill any germs...fill it with something temporary to allow any more puss to seep out then fill with permanent filling cuts are even easier... hydrogen peroxide alcohol betadyne and if sutures are needed use superglue... military has been using super glue for ages medical is a bit more tricky as human body is so complex 1000pg book wouldnt be enough.. maybe buy a med surg book from med school student or nursing student and try to get some vet meds other things id stock pile is iv caths and tubing and glassware for sterizing... if youre in a community make sure everyone knows their blood types...if someone gets hurt it would be nice to know 2 or 3 in your small community had o- blood (universal donor) or same blood type and you could get a pint or two back in the injured probably more tubing if someone is unconcious how to rehydrate them or feed them .. you could always use saline but if their gut isnt working to hydrate and its a shtf situation they are gonna die anyways

oh ps on using chicken liver... chicken liver works great but at a drawback it is slimey and comes off hook easily...you can remedy that in 1 of 2 ways.. first to cut it use scissors and let it either dry in the sun for a bit till it gets tougher or you can cut little pieces of panty hose and dip those in the blood and liver juice from containers then wrap small pieces of chicken liver in the panty hose and hook all that up in hook..the fibers from the panty hose keeps it on the hook...many times iver caught cat fish when i had 5 baited lines on one line all using the panty hose trick...caught a cat fish and even after releasing it...still had 5 hooks still baited ..the panty hose works good for keeping bait on hook

if you are learning to fish for fun thats a different area than learning to fish in a survival mode... if you are in a learning prep mode for survival training i wouldnt even bother with a fishing pole at all... survival mode would be 50lb test line tied to rocks or overhanging tree limbs maybe 10 of them then leave the area maybe build a fish trap so its automated and does it while you are away doing other things.... if this is just for fun... any cheap rod and reel should work..get 15-20lb test line ..chicken liver works great for catfish.. use multiple hooks fish on the bottom and at night ..have an "alarm" so you can tell if something nibbles when its dark..i heat up the tip of my knife with a lighter till its super hot and use that to "drill" one small hole in a big bobber then inside this hole insert 2-3 very tiny sinkers in it for the "rattle" then hook that bobber on the end of the pole and if you get even the slightest nibble you can hear the "rattle" from the sinkers inside the plastic bobber...(hard to explain) just use some creativity to devise your own "alarm" if that doesnt make sense... but once again if you are learning to fish for survival...forget the pole and learn how to make fish traps and make automated systems

    large scale desalination

You can legally go to the Bahamas now people take jet skis from miami to bahamas its only 50 miles I'm planning a trip later this year it's 150 bux for small boats. And if shtf I doubt anyone will be collecting the 150 bux lol. I also think I'm changing my plans from a parabolic mirror to a fresnel lense so I can aim down rather than up. Same concept though

    wave powered generator

True wind prob beats it in effectiveness and being cheap ( I'm very frugal even in disaster planning) lol windmill is just plain easier. Big windmill hooked to alternators from junked cars going to battery banks and inverters. Problem solved. I'm too cheap for solar cells lol
  10. Ps the sun oven is a product sold that doesn't use a parabolic mirror it's meant for baking. Parabolic mirror or fresnel lense gets too hot. Sun ovens sell I think for 200 bux
  11. Well whoever was voted as the leader would be. I have no intention on becoming the Bahamian hitler or Napoleon. Im sure some rudimentary "constitution" would be drawn up. Amended things added and changed. Believe it or not we humans thrive in structure as long as its fair equal and just. If I got voted off the very island that I started so be it I'd leave and start again. How many of us can say out modern system has ALWAYS treated them fairly? Nothing is perfect. My overall point is there is safety in numbers. We all know this. So wouldn't it make better sense that you are more safe in a unified community of a couple hundred vs you and 2 other families. I'm no genius and I can tell you now if I was in a small motorcycle gang of 20 and we were all starving I'd attack the group of 3 or 4 families over the group that out. Numbered us 10 to 1. It's just my opinion that safety is in numbers but I mean higher numbers closer to 100 and up not 10

    large scale desalination

If u do decide to buy one of this mirrors or fresnel lenses off him be very very careful they truly do get up to several thousand degree temps. If u have kids and they go playing with it and walk intO the focal point well it wouldn't be pretty so if u go with either treat it as if it's a welder or torch and keep kids or even adults away from it

    large scale desalination

Easiest way is tO do a search on YouTube It's basically just a huge mirror that cOncentrates light to one small focal point making the temperature very hot as in 2000 degrees if u have a big enough mirror. Just use that heat to boil the saltwater let the steam collect in or on something and run into one drain. When u boil saltwater ( or it evaporates) the salt is left behind. That's why there is nO salt in rainwater

    wave powered generator

heres an example of a small scale example of what i am thinking although maybe wind power might be easier only problem it would attract much attention so i guess like anything else there are always trade offs

    wave powered generator

just wondering if anyone on the coastline has ever tossed around the idea of a generator using waves for power? when shtf i plan on being on a small deserted island and id run out of wood too fast for a gasifier to be practical so i was thinking of making a generator that uses the ocean waves to power the thing to spin...anyone have a simple design already that i can rob for ideas?
