  1. Does any body have any good experience or knowledge about setting up a rainwater roof runoff system for potable water? I'm thinking one these 2000 gal. tanks with a modified downspout feeder and a filter on the spigot. Any better ideas? By the way, I will have a metal roof, and I'm in the Great Lakes region. Thanks, NightOwl
  2. Best way to do this is follow links to my Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30759108@N08/6878933522/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/30759108@N08/7025085599/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/30759108@N08/6879029478/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/30759108@N08/7025138713/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/30759108@N08/7025056287/in/photostream

    the travon martin shooting.

I doubt if ANYBODY will ever REALLY know what happened that night- but, what I take away from all this, the black panthers bounty, the calls to lynch zimmerman: is how fast "society" can go sideways from media-fueled hysteria with just the right amount of racial politics thrown in. Imagine if it were 80 degrees in the middle of summer when this happened (I know it's 80 degrees in FL, I mean the whole country) when things tend to get a little more crazy anyway. P.S. I heard a few days ago the black panthers are threatening to burn down Detroit. S...L...O...W___M...O...T...I...O...N___A...P...O...C...A...L...Y...P...S...E !
  4. I guess since you mentioned your were at the shooting range the cop was justified- but , I still think cops nowadays are much more heavy handed than when I grew-up in the '60s and '70s - "Officer Friendly" is long gone!

    survival tips and tricks

Yes, BUT, no one of the "old boys" invented all the things you mentioned and they to were the lucky beneficiaries of their forefathers - so we have the benefit of eons of wisdom and accumulated knowledge and also being farther down the evolutionary road. So, yes I do consider myself "smarter" than the average caveman (actually many humans I know too!) and much better equipped to survive in my time period. As for your wifes opinion about your place in the evolutionary chain I refrain from any involvement in that discussion.

    survival tips and tricks

I always remember human beings have been living off the Earth for millions of years and I am smarter than any caveman, also I remember that Man is the most dangerous animal on the planet.
  7. I have owned dozens of guns in my life, and they kind of come and go- sometimes I trade them, sometimes I need the cash. What gun do wish you hadn't sold? I REALLY liked my DS Arms FAL Paratrooper in .308!!!
  8. I am trying to figure out what is the best fuel (gasoline, diesel, kerosene) for long term storage. I know about Stabil and PRI-G Gasoline Treatment (is this stuff REALLY as good as it claims- one website claims 10 years storage life if you add PRI-G Gasoline Treatment every 6 months!!!), I have read that Ethanol is the main culprit in todays "modern" gasolines that it seperates from the gas and attracts water vapor. Would gas without Ethanol store better? -I can get it at the marina. Some sites claim diesel will keep from 3 months to 1 year (???) Is there any one out there who REALLY knows the answer?
  9. Agreed, I've come to about the same conclusion. I'm also gonna brush up on my equestrian skills.
  10. Helpful, but I'm still working on it.
  11. Yahoo news is reporting that "Great" Britain is implimenting a CCTV system that will check a drivers license plate to make sure they have Govt. mandated car insurance or the gas pump won't function!!! Every year more and more Liberty, Freedom and self-determination is being strangled away from regular citizens who the rich and powerful think are too stupid to govern their own lives! And we keep voting them into office - maybe they're right. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/cameras-u-k-gas-stations-block-uninsured-drivers-155857252.html

"NO Insurance NO Gas in "Great" Britain"

I don't see this JUST as a driving issue- I am sick of cameras being pointed at me everywhere I go while some anonymous cop, bureaucrat, or tin-horn security guard decides if they want to charge me with some crime that was likely enacted simply for the purpose of generating more revenue to feed "the machine". I received a robot camera speeding ticket 4 weeks ago from Washington D.C. Metro Police Dept.- I nor my car have ever been to Washington D.C.!!! Neither the car nor the license plate in the photo were mine! But, I still had to answer to the charge or they will suspend my drivers license- from a municipality I HAVE NEVER STEPPED FOOT INTO!!! They want $300.00!!! I had to write a letter to some judge trying to explain how this could not have been me- I HAVE TO TRY AND PROVE A NEGATIVE!!! Which, if you have ever studied logic, IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!
  13. I bought 3 of these at a dollar store, I thought they would be good for 2 person private/covert listening of AM/FM radio, weather radio, scanner, etc.- I tested one and they work in stereo- they seem to be pretty well made for Chinese knock-offs.
  14. I was hoping for a little more practical nuts-and-bolts answer, but if we're going to be esoteric about it ENTROPY is the REAL problem - we're all headed for "lower states of energy".

How do I find people like me

I would like to see an indepth article aboutHam radio and radio waves in particular: "old knowledge" that might work very well under todays high-tech radar, - all for the educational purposes only.

I watched the PVC survival stick video, pretty good idea! I have a few changes in mind- when I get one built I will post it on youtube for all to see. Here is the link I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNVreq_84D0

    What's in/on your nightstand?

    Here it is!
  18. I am compiling ideas for integral security features that I can build into a future retreat I plan to build. Security that is engineered into the design of the building, landscape and all access points. For example: I plan to use plan to use steel I-beams for the frame and I plan to stud them evey 8 inches instead of every 16 around my 2nd floor bedroom/bath and the 1st floor storage area below, I so I am already sleeping in my "safe room" when a tornado strikes at 4a.m. I will be using ICF blocks (which are poured full of concrete) for the walls and concrete for the ceilings. .jpg] I am planning redundent comm systems that will be safe from attack and penetration from bad apples. Every real camera will have 2 "dummy twins" (they can't shoot them ALL at once). Hiding places and caches will be designed into the blueprints. Even the landscaping will be designed to give me tactical advantage over marauders and sneaky thieves. I will have low-profile and hidden exits and entrances. I will have several concentric circles of security that will make it just as difficult for the zombies to escape as it was to enter. And of course, the real security features and functions shall remain secret. I would like to see an in depth article on the design and construction of this subject - I know the knowledge is out there in govt. buildings and military installations- any experts in the audience?

    Anyone use this product??

MY first thought is some homemade fire paste from vasoline and THE RIGHT AMOUNT of gasoline mixed together- or maybe kerosene instead, maybe wax and kerosene?

    oc pepper spray

What happens if the other guy has a REAL Glock 19???!!! A very real possibility in the U.S. Having said that, I did have to "hose down" an aggressive street beggar in Chicago who grabbed my arm on a dark street one night and I had 2 of these, one in each hand... .jpg] I used about half of each container at about 10 feet and the bum stumbled backward, fell over some bushes and dropped a metal bar he had under his coat. I walked over to Borders books and enjoyed a moche latte. If you can't carry a real piece, pepper spray is better than nothing. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY for a civilian to get a carry permit in IL, especially in Shitcago!
  21. From The Atlantic's website: Since the time of Trinity -- the first nuclear explosion in 1945 -- nearly 2,000 nuclear tests have been performed. Most of these occurred during the 1960s and 1970s. When the technology was new, tests were frequent and often spectacular, and they led to the development of newer, more deadly weapons. Since the 1990s, there have been efforts to limit the testing of nuclear weapons, including a U.S. moratorium and a U.N. comprehensive test ban treaty. As a result, testing has slowed -- though not halted -- and there are looming questions about who will take over for those experienced engineers who are now near retirement? Gathered here are images from the first 30 years of nuclear testing. Shot during Fishbowl Bluegill, this is an image of an explosion of a 400 kiloton nuclear bomb taking place in the atmosphere, 30 miles above the Pacific, as viewed from above, in October 1962. (U.S. Department of Defense) A nuclear artillery shell fired approx. 9 miles into the Nevada desert, May 25, 1953 "Rope tricks" are seen in this image of a nuclear explosion taken less than one millisecond after detonation. In Operation Doorstep, conducted during the larger Operation Upshot-Knothole nuclear bomb test, mannequins are seated at a table in the dining room of house number two, attending a "dinner party" thrown by Civil Defense officials who are testing the effects of an atomic explosion on houses and occupants on March 15, 1953. A photo of a nuclear bomb detonated by the French government at the Mururoa atoll, French Polynesia. How do I find people like me

I was just trying to be funny- BUT, the point is ANY list, bulletin board, chat room, etc. where you ask to meet fellow survivalists you are going to attract some percentage of kooks, wierdos and dangerous people and THOSE people attract law enforcement! Best way to meet people is just face to face in everyday life - AND EVEN THEN BE VERY CAREFUL!!!

    "Map of Freedom"

I found this about a week ago - I thought it was VERY eye-opening!!! Light blue is more Freedom, darker blue is less Freedom. The numerals in black indicate ranking amognst the 50 states. (1 the best, 50 the worst) I live in Indiana #3 with the most freedom overall!!! The map was created by George Mason University. http://mercatus.org/freedom-50-states-2011/ranking-discussion
